interesting, i wonder who picks him up next

My guess is maybe back to the SEC for another stop as a DC. I'll guess Arkansas.
I think they are happy withe Bielmas staff, no?

I listened to Chip Brown, the Texas insider, on Russillo and Kannell yesterday and it doesn't seem to be a done deal yet that he will be fired. Although I think it is an almost certainty, Chip seems to think there is a very very small chance he keeps the job.

  2. the sound system was fixed prior to 2014 season. Did acoustics study throughout 2013 with the new addition, and used info to fix it. Ive been there 4 times since this, and my opinion is that the sound now is as good as its ever been there.

They need to fix the sound in the east upper balcony. Sat up there for the first time this year. I really liked the view but the sound quality is not nearly the same.

If Armstrong is cleared to play, Fyfe still starts and will play until Minnesota causes him to turn it over twice. Then Tommy comes in.

As I posted in your status update, there's no way you can do that as a coach. If TA can play he starts. If he can't start he doesn't play. Why? Because if he can't start it means he can't play. There's no gray area in concussions. Either you are cleared or you aren't.

I understand if he's cleared he can play.

But, if he is just skating past the line to play they may consider letting him sit unless actually needed to get the win. Why risk longer term injury against Minnesota if we don't have to? Maybe he's cleared, but he isn't playing well enough to start yet from some lingering effects. It's just not that black and white.

Actually, concussion protocol is pretty black and white. Either he's cleared to play or he's not.

The point being made is that even if he passes the protocol - there could be reason to still hold him out, unless they decide they need him for the win at some point during the game.

If he passes the protocol he starts. I see no reason to even contemplate sitting him "unless needed". What would that reason be?

If he has some lingering fatigue or vertigo/dizzyness. If he isn't cleared before he can practice at all, how do they know what his actual status is? Or say he gets cleared tomorrow, then during practice it's clear he isn't all there yet.

This just isn't how the concussion protocol works. He will not have any symptoms if he is cleared through the protocol. I don't know why people aren't listening or reading the link from Sam McKewon's tweet.

If he is cleared, he is good to go 100%. There is no other way to do it in concussion protocol. I don't know how much clearer the multiple posters in this thread can make this.

"If he is cleared, he is good to go 100%."

    This statement is somewhat naive.

Yes, the protocol is binary, pass or fail. However, the symptomatic data used to arrive at that binary decision, is subjective and relies upon the report of symptoms by an extremely competitive individual in a culture that values toughness. See where the problem may lie? Think a patient/player may lie in order to get past the protocol? It's not like it's hard to figure out what the "right" answers are to their questions.

Determining pass/fail takes a bit more interpretation than you seem to understand.

I'll trust the doctors to make the best decision that they can, with the information that they have.

No, your statement is naive. We have protocols that cannot be gamed. They aren't doing Freudian psychoanalysis on Tommy to see how he 'feels': they are putting him through cognitive tests that you cannot fake. If he passes them, he is good to play.

100% correct. If I am naive, some are ignorant in regards to the process. There is no way to guess on the questions. It isn't like back in the day where you say who the president is. At the beginning of the season you take a baseline test that measures your cognitive ability, and you aren't cleared to even practice until you can match those results after a head injury. It is different every time you take it and it keys on memorization. It is not an easy test, in any way.

Third party physicians make the decision for clearance. It is completely out of the hands of coaches, and Universities and high schools across the nation are making sure this protocol is completely followed to a T to protect themselves from litigation.

As bad as this sounds I had friends who intentionally missed questions and took longer (intentionally let time go by) on the puzzles/memory games during the baseline test to insure they could return in case of a head injury.

If foster didn't play this season it seems like he would be eligible for the medical redshirt right? Or did he lose that by practicing?

Eligible yes. But it sounds like he would have to miss a second year due to injury to be able to expect to get one (you can't apply until after your fifth year).

Seems like him playing would pretty much kill that possibility.

It sounds like the staff is skeptical he would be granted a 6th year if they brought him back at all at the end of the season. With the amount of doubt and because of the timing of the injury which allows him to participate at the end of the year (rather then playing in the first two games and then being injured) I now don't think its a good idea to sit him if he is ready. Let him play and lets try to get to a better bowl game.

    Thank you ^

Actually you are somewhat wrong. I've gone through the concussion protocol used by many schools. Not only is it subjective and symptom free reporting but there are multiple cognitive baseline tests that must be passed as well. Some are physical examination but the majority are a computer program.

  6. Not sure if this is being discussed anywhere else but wouldn't Foster be in line for a medical redshirt right now? Can they still play him for a couple of games at the end of the season and still get this done?

I believe the rule is you are eligible for a medical red shirt if you have not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests - whichever is greater. However, the waiver/request can be denied. If I had my druthers I'd rather wait to play him against Iowa and in the bowl game since our chance of playing for a conference championship is small.

Big Ten schools announced football games to be televised in Friday primetime during the 2017 season. The games, which will be televised by ESPN and FOX, are as follows:

Fri., Sept. 1 Washington at Rutgers

Fri., Sept. 1 Utah State at Wisconsin

Fri., Sept. 8 Ohio at Purdue

Fri., Sept. 29 Nebraska at Illinois

Fri., Oct. 13 Northwestern at Maryland

Fri., Oct. 27 Michigan State at Northwestern

If we have to play in a Friday night game I am pretty happy with it being away and the opponent (Illinois).

Not able to visit this weekend due to playoff schedule.

Wow - huge blow especially considering he just announced he will be deciding in about a month. Any plans to reschedule or has our ship sailed on this one?

Says he is "hopefully" still going to visit but no date as of now.

Thanks Mav - your insight and info is always appreciated.

  9. Foster could still be able to play this year and still get a medical RS couldn't he? If he doesn't play against Minny the most games he could play would be 2 so still could get a medical right?

I think the rule for medical redshirt is less then 30% of competition or 3 games. Based on such, perhaps Foster returns for Iowa and bowl game and still eligible.

  10. Has anyone seen Nebraska's response to this or agreement with caveats as other schools (like Ohio State's caveats for example)? I'd be against hosting a game on Friday but not necessarily opposed to playing an away game at Rutgers, Purdue or Maryland on a Friday.

Or does our game against Iowa count :P? (I kid I kid... I know the games are scheduled for Sept and Oct an to be on BTN)

I think Bo would be a phenomenal DC in the NFL. Talent across the board. Unlimited prep time (his system was predicated on hours of film study to determine tendancies and combos). Lack of mobile qb's to deal with. No recruiting. it seems like a position that would be tailor made for him.

Yes. I think Bo has missed his calling. Some coaches are just not cut out for college football. We should've learned that from the Callahan debacle. Bill was a good NFL coach. Bo was successful at the NFL level but less so at the college level. Nothing wrong with that. Would he succeed at Purdue? I doubt it as the powers that be would not likely hire him given his reputation and firing at NU. Too much baggage.

Completely agree. Bo would be a great D coordinator in the NFL. His scheme matches up much better in the NFL.

  12. My high school, a consistent above average team, just got dominated by this kid and his team this past Friday. My old football and baseball coach is the current DC at my high school and I'm in his son's wedding next summer, so I asked him what he thought of Sarell.

Nothing shocking considering the ranking but said the kid is the real deal, "he's legit." Coach always had a good eye on talent, and when he coached against Austin Sefarian-Jenkins, he said he was soft - which probably explains why he got cut from the Bucs already after being a high round draft pick.

He also said that after the game, my school's student section began chanting "GO TO UW" as Sarell walked past them lol.

So the real question is why you were not at the game chanting "GO TO NEBRASKA"...

We lose 3 WRs, pretty much just DPE and Stanley return who have seen decent chunk of action, Alston is inexperienced, Spielman too, and then just the incoming group.

Not a ton of detail, but this was posted just a little bit ago

    http://nebraska.247sports.com/Bolt/Huskers-offer-junior-college-receiver-48229583

We'll also have Reimers and Rahn who've played a decent amount plus Keyan Williams played at Fresno.

But we look to have a lot of talent coming in next year. Generally speaking, I'd rather take as many HS guys who we'll have for longer. Especially with the guys we have interested.

Yeah and I hear ya about those 3, I did forget about Keyan, but are they guys we can really expect to shine like Reilly, Zo and JW? I hope so, but I'm not banking on it.

The additional thought I had was someone for their jet/fly sweep. DPE hasn't excelled in it immediately, like I thought he would. IIRC, that is a play Riley/Langs really like to rely on and maybe this kid could fill that role?

I think Spielman fills the jet/fly sweep next year. From what I heard there was thought to use Spielman in that role this year due to the uncertainty with DPE and Reilly being injured/suspended.
