Hi all, I come in peace. I've always admired Nebraska football and your success. You are a great program with world-class fans. I mean that.

I was watching the Iowa game here in Chicago with my Spartan family and then decided to watch both post-game coach pressers. Now, we could all be wrong, but we all sensed that your coach seems to be shirking responsibility a bit. Just in his mannerisms and choice of words. Almost like a passive-aggressive approach to team leadership. Are we off base here? The clapping comments seemed odd and trivial. Almost as if Frost is trying to focus on non sequiturs to distract from the team's lack of discipline. I think he also said that no one ever needed to pump him up as a player, implying his players need their hands held. idk, am I mistinterpreting Frost? Your thoughts?  I still think he can be an elite coach at Nebraska, but I'm just a little miffed by his tactics. He still seems like a really solid hire and man.

I write all this in good faith because I like when Nebraska is strong. It's good for the conference brand and helps balance the divisions more.

    Go Green!

Your take and analysis are spot on!

    No, no, and no.

    I'd maybe fire Greg Austin.

If Austin gets a raise or extension this year we will know Frost lacks the ability to evaluate the staff with a clear head. Not saying Austin needs to be fired but he needs to prove himself.

Wisconsin runs the 3-4 and does fine stopping the run.

Pretty certain scheme isn't the cause of any issues we have in stopping the run...the issues are when to blitz, when not to blitz, dropping us into a 4-3, when to be in nickel, getting our backers into coverage, etc.

The coaches do a crappy job right now putting us into positions to succeed.  That's not the 3-4's fault...that's the coaches scheming to defeat the opponent offense and it's been horrendous this year.

I take it you think we should Blitz First...

How good would Sark, Grinch, Venables or any of the other big names look with our bunch of rookies?  I get fans are ticked- I am too.  However, I think we need to pump the brakes.  Our defense was looking pretty good for a couple of games.  We have some really talented youth who were recruited by these guys.  Imo, they deserve the chance to show what they can do with them in 2021.  As far as offense, I think our new OC deserves more than 4 games during the weirdest stretch of college football in our lifetimes to get it rolling.

I do think some of your comments make sense and Frost may need to go outside his comfort zone.  I just think this would be a terrible time to do so.

Completely agree. Especially (to the bolded) with two QBs who have struggled with down the field throws.

They are a practice jersey intended to be worn by the starting defense.  The fact a person is a starter is the award, not the jersey.  I would prefer to see them handed out at the start of the season to the guys slated to be starters.  Adjust accordingly throughout the season so the jersey is representative of the starters.  I don't care for the award mentality that has surrounded them.

I am glad that you have looked into logical fallacies, here are a couple more:

    • "This is probably cherry picking data"
      • This is an example of an Ad Hominem fallacy (attacking the person who questions your argument).
    • "Does anybody REALLY believe that it is due to football teams spreading virus and not irresponsible general college population spreading virus?"
      • This is an example of an Ad Populum fallacy (why waste time with evidence when "everyone" says it is right?)
    • "Relating COVID spikes to FBS power 5 football is not supported by an initial look at the data."
    • "If it was football related, then the curves in all the conferences should begin at roughly similar intervals from the onset of play."
      • These are examples of the Hasty Generalization fallacy.
    • "There is no consistent relationship between the onset of games in power 5 conferences and the onset of spikes in cases."
      • An example of Ad Ignoratium (appeal to ignorance, if no one here can prove false, it must be true)

I wanted to give Collin Miller a shout out, we have been hard on him this year.  I thought he played fast and hit hard against Penn State.

I agree.  However, I'm still wondering why the starting ILBs isn't Honas and Reimer.

I think Miller has become a stable leader and voice on the defense. I'm good with Miller starting and then a rotation of the 3 throughout the game.

I think Martinez's issues on short passes are significantly overblown. It is not at all a strength in his game, but last year there were more drops than misses. This year, people took the one miss against NW andare running with the narrative that he can't make those. I actually think that one was catchable, but definitely not perfect. It's easy for us to say the other guy would've/wouldn't have made certain plays, and most of the time we have no idea. I think Luke get's it out quicker, I haven't seen enough to say much more than that.

We must be watching different games then.

OK....with the two plays I mentioned.  Can you really see a way they were Luke's fault?  1)  the WR runs into the mesh point, obviously someone was running the wrong play.  The QB and RB were running one play and the WR was running something else.  2)    Luke gets the snap, turns to do what looks like a Zone Read and the RB runs into him.

I'm not a really great Xs and Os guy.  So, I'm honestly asking.

I'm not saying they were Luke's fault at all. One was a bad snap which throws timing off - but every QB has a little different depth to their step. I don't know if I'm correct, but I would bet some of the plays we saw timing issues were a result of split snaps and the personnel maybe only practicing the play once with each other. I would suspect we start to see less and less of that - so long as we get the snap issue fixed which seems to have came back for Jurgens.

And yet Martinez had better rushing stats in the first two games than Luke did Saturday.  Against a worse defense.

    Like I said....

Martinez has shown over the last 8 games (that he started) he can't make the short passes to keep drives alive. Sure he completes one every now and then - but his short and intermediate pass game was below average. Martinez trying to complete a bubble screen, pass to the flat, or a screen pass to a rb was downright awful. There is no argument Luke was a significant upgrade in this area; in fact, multiple instances (and comments pointing such out from friends as the game was going on) in the last 6 quarters where Luke has made throws which would have been 1-hopped or uncatchable with Martinez in there.

Was this the play where the WR looked like he was faking a jet sweep and ran into the mesh point between Luke and the RB?

I'm guessing the WR (Alante?) was running the wrong play?

There was another one where it looked like the RB ran into the QB at the mesh point.

    Those two plays were frustrating.

There were some frustrating timing and mesh point issues - which shouldn't be there since "we've had more practices without a game then any team in history" (per Scott Frost).

One possible cause is lack of reps in practice with McCaffrey in practice. Yes, I already know he was splitting reps throughout fall - but hopefully with him being the clear cut guy going into this week he will be able to get more than 1 (or 2) reps with the plays implemented in the game plan. The result should be better mesh points and timing.

I get the optimism, but this isn’t a mid season freshman Tommy Frazier takeover we have going here.

Agree. Luke is a baller but I don’t see him as a 4 year starter. His style will take too many hits in a full non- COVID season.

  13. The oline is a hindrance to anything they want to do. You can tell based on the play calling that Frost doesn’t trust the oline or qbs. Further, he doesn’t trust the young wrs at crucial times. Good win but still a long way to go. Look lost with no direction on offense.

I wonder if Luke not playing much in the first half last week was more of Frost knowing he was going to play him a lot at QB in the second half and wanted him thinking about that instead of WR or DuckR or whatever he's been playing.

No. If Frost had his druthers AM would have continued to play in the 2nd half as a result of good performance. Also, Frost stated they attempted to work Luke in during the 1st half but because of the looks NW gave they went away or checked out of it.

I rewatched the game, and Omar was in a lot more than I originally thought. Not sure on his exact snap count but definitely was in during the 1st quarter. But I didn't notice Omar getting open any more than the other WR (but the camera doesn't show much downfield either). Does anyone know how much playing time Omar actually got?

Rivals had Omar's snap count at 4 (with 0 targets).

  16. Aside from the QB and receiver position, I'll be intrigued to see how inside linebacker shakes out. Honas by far played the best in the first game against OSU (Reimer was injured). Reimer by far played the best in the second game gains NW (Honas was injured). Miller has played pretty good as well and is a Captain. Rudd is in a quandary (in a good way). Assuming all are healthy the three will rotate, but do you not start your captain or one of the best performers from weeks 1 and 2? Probably not a big deal overall just an interesting situation and observation.

This is not at either of you personally, I see a lot of people who believe this. But do you really believe they're sabotaging the team by intentionally playing worse players? Frost is stubborn, but he's also an insane competitor who wants to win. I think that outweighs any stubbornness sticking with guys for any reason, so I really believe they think the guys out there give us the best chance.

We can disagree with them on that I guess, but we really think we know certain players give us a better chance to win? We've seen some of these guys playing a little bit, and many of them not at all. The coaches are much more in tune with the players' strengths and weaknesses, and I believe them if they're saying the guys playing give us the best chance to win. We can still be frustrated and it could still be the coaches fault that the younger guys aren't developed to a point where they help us win more, but I just don't understand the view that the open competitions are not legitimate.

No, I definitely don't believe they are self sabotaging. I think there isn't enough trust in some of the younger guys who might mess up here and there but have much more talent than a player which might be assignment sound during the week. The frustrating part is a lot of the guys being put out there still make mistakes in game. For instance, Liewer and Falck have committed more penalties and mistakes than they have made contributions in the games so far.

They have been splitting snaps with the 1s all fall.  Shouldn't they both should essentially be prepping the same game plan?

Yes and No. Yes as to your base plays. But if you are splitting reps then its difficult to design game plans specific for each game. For instance, if you want to run a variation off of a look you've previously given its tough to give both players a look/reps in practice. Also, the splitting of reps could be a reason we have seen issues in the red zone. Most coaches will dedicate a large chunk of practice on either Wed or Thursday (or both) for red zone offense. In that session its difficult to split the reps and the guy not getting the reps will be significantly behind. If you do split the reps then its tough to have any cohesion with the unit - which I think have witnessed in the first two games.

  19. While I like the competition aspect during the week at QB it is somewhat counter-productive as far as developing a game plan for a young QB. For a young guy like Luke it is much more imperative to get him more reps in the game plan and plays than it is for someone who has the starting experience that Martinez does.

AM had a couple of really nice play/throws on the first drive, but then it devolved from there. One play we missed picking up a middle linebacker who came right through the middle of the line and AM stopped his rollout and side armed a perfect ball to the receiver. He make some plays, but then he can't even throw a swing pass in step:dunno

Completely agree - Martinez lacks the necessary 'touch' on swing or bubble passes and its even worse on crossing routes or throws down the field.

Everyone needs to relax.  The defense is light years ahead of where they were 10 months ago.  They had modified spring practice and started playing in October.  The special teams are no longer a joke.

I'm in the camp that this all goes away with a change or two.  I believe they are going to happen.

The special teams are still a joke. The punt and kickoff coverage are slow and horrendous. The punter gets zero hangtime and (thankfully for the coverage unit) doesn't punt it over 40 yards. The kicker is questionable from inside 40. Special teams are a bit better than last year but still a long way to go.
