  1. I have no doubt in my mind that the starter next year will be Taylor Martinez. He proved that, without injury, he is very much a dual threat QB. He can run and he can throw. His inexperience as a freshman is one reason for all those stupid, boneheaded mistakes that he made, and I hope that with a year under his belt in playing in (and struggling in some) big games (Texas, Okie State, Missouri, aTm, Oklahoma) he will become a better leader and player as a QB.

And of course when you're only allowed to run a certain amount of plays (i.e. Zone Read), you're not going to have much success in your first year.

  2. I am all for a name change...and I think some of the aforementioned division names sound pretty good. I am glad that Delaney is actually listening to the fan bases. That's something that I don't think would happen in the Big XII unless Texas disapproved of the proposition as well

  3. To me this season seems like a disappointment because we didn't do anything that the team set out to do at the beginning of the year: That being Beat Texas and Win the Big XII. 0 for 2 on those. Plus people, like myself were hoping to see an explosive offense and we did early when we played Washington and Kansas State, completely lost it against SDSt and Texas, got it back vs Okie State and Mizzou, and then watched it fizzle out for the rest of the year.

  4. We'd have to renovate the OC box. Make it abnormally wider than the others.

"Why is that window especially wider?"

    "Mark Mangino is in there"

    "Oh"

But back on topic. The Nevada OC would probably be the best bet IF Shawn Watson were to go. There's a lot of talent leaving that Nevada program if my memory serves me correctly and I'm not sure that the Nevada OC would be wanting to stay. Plus he runs an offense that most of our fans like to see, a running based offense. Mike Leach is head coaching material and I don't think he would settle for an OC position at any school, even if it is Nebraska.

  5. I personally see us being contenders in the Big Ten next year.

@ Wisconsin is obviously going to be a balanced team next year. I don't think they will be as good without Scott Tolzien though. But with John Clay and Company, Wisconsin will resemble offensively what Nebraska did this year: a very strong running team with an iffy passing game. This game will be close and could be decided by which defense steps up and stops the running game.

Way too Early Prediction: Nebraska 24 Wisconsin 17 OT

vs. Ohio State If both teams are undefeated heading into this game at Lincoln, bet on College GameDay showing up for this game. Ohio State will be a scary team offensively next year with Terrelle Pryor and Dan Herron making a return to THE Ohio State University. Ohio State's defense will undergo minor changes as they do lose some key players on the D-Line and in the secondary. If Nebraska can, with great linebacker play, prevent Pryor from scrambling and if the D-Line can get pressure on Pryor, he will make mistakes in the passing game. Our offense will have to step up and convert off these turnovers because this will be what decides this game.

Way too Early Prediction: Ohio State 23 Nebraska 17

@ Minnesota: Bo Pelini will show just how silly Cosgrove's defense was when he was at Nebraska. And Nebraska's potentially inept, potentially explosive offense will put a load of points on the board at TFC Bank Stadium.

Way too Early Prediction: Nebraska 45 Minnesota 10

vs Michigan State Michigan State will have to find players to step up to fill the big shoes that will be left in Sparty land after this year. If they do, then look for Michigan State to make this game close. If they don't, Nebraska shuts down Michigan State offensively and will score enough points to win the football game.

Way too Early Prediction: Nebraska 27 Michigan State 17

vs Northwestern: Northwestern is a sleeper team for next year. They don't lose a whole lot of players and will be a very experienced group. If there is an upset of Nebraska next year, look for it to come in this game against the Wildcats.

Way too Early Prediciton: Nebraska 28 Northwestern 24

@ Penn State: Talk about an experienced team next year. Penn State, like Northwestern, doesn't lose a whole lot of starters. There offensive line will take some hits, but other than that their offense will be back, minus Evan Royster. This game will be close, but I'll give the advantage to a rocking Happy Valley in this one.

Way too Early Prediction: Penn State 24 Nebraska 20

@ Michigan So long as they keep Greg Robinson at defensive coordinator, Michigan isn't getting any better defensively and when they run up against a Nebraska defense who will have, perhaps the best linebacking core in the nation with a great defensive line and a pretty good secondary (because, come on, we lose a lot of stars, but there are people back there to fill their shoes), their explosive offense will be shut down for the most part.

Way too Early Prediction: Nebraska 34 Michigan 20

vs Iowa: Let Farmageddon BEGIN! I think Nebraska takes the first one in this Thanksgiving series. Iowa won't be as strong on offense as they were this year, and you saw what happened to them (7-5). I think our defense shuts them down and Nebraska wins by scoring just enough to win.

Way too Early Prediction: Nebraska 21 Iowa 13

Barring we don't lose any OOC games

    Final Record: 10-2 (6-2)

Meet Ohio State in the first Big Ten Championship Game.

Looking at a possible Rose Bowl berth next year.

At least that is my expectations. Think of them what you will

  6. I'm torn. I love CG, but I don't know if he could have made some of the throws that Taylor did. Maybe, maybe not. I just don't know. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think CG has ever thrown more than 99 yards in a game. Martinez had ~150 I believe.

Martinez also had utility in the beginning of the game. I am sure that OU had to pay attention to his running ability, which might have opened things up initially. But once it was obvious that he wasn't going to run with the ball, then he became no better than CG.

As for CG, I think he would not have freaked out in the pocket like Martinez. This is the biggest indictment of the "Martinez is a freshman; lay off" argument. Martinez is a REDSHIRT freshman, which means he's been in the program as long as CG. CG looks poised and comfortable in the pocket; Martinez panics as soon as there is any pressure. I think that CG and Burkhead provide a very stable, reliable backfield that would have ultimately been a better choice than Burkhead-Martinez.

Now, if I'm being honest, Zac Lee gives us the best chance to win of the three, since he is a better passer than Martinez, the calmest of the three, and is enough of a run threat to move the chains every now and again. His injury really cost us.

You fail to realize that Martinez didn't see the field at all and had no idea what it was actually like when it mattered. That makes a BIG difference. Cody Green had his issues when he started in the Oklahoma game but as a result, he learned from his mistakes and bad games, and made himself into a better QB this year. Hopefully he starts next year. I think he will be way better than Martinez.

  7. Ease up on Taylor. I've said it and I'll say it again. He is a FRESHMAN QB. What do you expect? A FRESHMAN QB can torch a weak defense. A FRESHMAN QB can win most games when the team has either: A) jumped to an early lead via the run game or pass game, or B) the defense is completely shutting down the opposition. In the games where neither of these happen, a FRESHMAN QB will struggle. FRESHMAN QBs have to learn what to do and what not to do in the big games. You saw this with Landry Jones last year, and Taylor Martinez and Garrett Gilbert this year. They're growing pains and both these two will be better because of it (i.e. Oklahoma) Ease off.

He didn't play well, Watson's playcalling (your second point, I believe) was the most glaring disappointment in the game and in the season. Now watch him call a brilliant game against our bowl opponent so he can save his ass

  8. Your comment about the defense getting owned is the most ridiculous thing in your whole opinion. You had to know going into the game that Oklahoma was going to throw, and they were going to throw deep. One of those two deep passes was the result of a great pass, which defenders can do nothing about. And a defense can only do so much when it is running on empty, which is exactly what our defense was doing. They gave everything out on the field to keep OU from making it a blowout because our incompetent offense couldn't manage to stay on the field for more than 30 seconds. They gave up only one TD off of turnovers, and two FGs, one of which was the result of a goal line stand. They were the reason this game was close. Oklahoma had 455 yards and only 23 points to show for it. You may call that owned, but I call that impressive

As far as the Shawn Watson belief, I can't agree with it for reasons already mentioned.

But I do agree that people shouldn't be harsh on Taylor. He is a freshman QB and very rarely will freshman QBs NOT make mistakes in big games. These things are growing pains and they will happen less and less as he begins to mature. But if he is going to be the future QB, then you have to start somewhere, and unfortunately it came with a loss in the Big XII Championship. He will be better because of this though.

  9. While I don't see a lot of dark years coming up for us in the Big Ten +2, I think that we have to get rid of Shawn Watson. This play calling stunk up the joint. But there was one key play that had NOTHING to do with the OC that came in the second half and had a major impact on the game. That play, of course, would be Martinez's INT in the end zone. I understand that he was trying to make a play and wanted to be a hero, but you have to know better to force a throw across your body. If he would've taken the sack or thrown it away it would have been 23-16 Nebraska and we wouldn't be having this conversation right now.

  10. I had I think the same expectations as some of you did going into the season: Win 10 games, win the Big XII by facing Oklahoma, and go to the Fiesta Bowl and win that. So before I hammer in all the disappointments about this season, I'll go ahead and say some positive, "steps forward", that happened this year. Our defense proved that yes, we will be just as good if not better without Ndamukong Suh. We were the number 2 secondary in the country and we made good QBs look silly (except Landry Jones, man did he perform tonight). We went into hostile environments and won. This didn't happen last year (with the exception of Missouri). This year we won games @ Iowa State, @ Oklahoma State, @ Washington, @ Kansas State, and only lost one on the road to Texas aTm (but I won't discuss my opinion on that game) I would say those are our two biggest successes of this year.

But I can't think of this season as anything but disappointing. Because it was a season of what could have been if the offense showed up for 3 key games this year: Texas, Texas aTm, and Oklahoma in the Big XII Championship Game. In all of these games, our players didn't execute, but the play calling didn't give them a chance to execute. For God's sake, Shawn Watson, how hard is it to figure out what was successful against Oklahoma tonight? The one rushing TD, we ran between the tackles! There's an old saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Running between the tackles wasn't broke, and the only times it didn't work was when we ran the zone read. I don't know of many teams who will be successful running between the tackles if they start 4 yards behind the line of scrimmage at a standstill when they get the ball. Sure it works every now and then, but we were more effective lining up under center and running it up the middle. This is why Shawn Watson needs to be fired. He tries to do too much and it sometimes works, but when it doesn't, he just keeps going at it.

Obviously Taylor Martinez played like a freshman in a big game. Those happen. And it's all a part of growing up. But you would think that he would know to throw the ball away when he doesn't see anything. I don't blame him as much for this loss as I do Shawn Watson because he is a freshman and he is still growing and he will be better because of this.

But that's just my opinion of this year.

Alex Henery kicks ass. I will miss him very much. Adi Kunalic too.

Hopefully we play a team > UConn and win, it will make us look better

  11. I'm not on the Fire Watson bandwagon. Clearly, there have been times this year when I thought the game plan didn't put us in a position to win the football game. However, there are times when the offense did not execute the game plan that Wats drew up. Both sides are to blame. And unfortunately for Wats, he gets all the blame even when the offense doesn't execute.

You guys hear Bo when he says, "We have to execute." You think maybe that means something?

Watson has looked brilliant in a couple of games this year, and he has been limited in some games with injuries. I would like to bet that any offense coordinator in a big time program like Nebraska would struggle if some of their big players were injured.

  12. Well, hey, if he's near healthy-then I would start him as well. If he can plant and throw off that ankle, then he is usually a much more effective passer than Cody. Same thing goes for if he can cut off that ankle and have the toe not affect him-he is a much more effective runner than Cody.

If he's near 100%, then he is a much better start.
