  1. NONE. Maybe this has been covered in the past. But I've heard for so many years from so many fans that I did some research and confirmed that the polls are MORE THAN fair to Nebraska.

I looked at FINAL AP rankings from 1970 to present and found that multiple times the Huskers were the highest rated team with one, two, three and four losses. Like this:

1972 Final rank #4 Record 9-2-1 No two loss team was ranked higher

1973 #7 9-2-1 Again, no two loss team higher

1974 #9, 9-3 No three loss team higher

    1976 #9, 9-3-1 Same as above

    1981 #11, 9-3 Same as above

1984 #4, 10-2 No two loss team higher

1985 #11, 9-3 No three loss team higher

    1986 # 5, 10-2 No two loss team higher

    1987 #6, 10-2 Same as above

    1996 #6, 10-2 Same as above

1998 #19, 9-4 No four loss team higher

    2009 #14, 10-4 Same as above

And don't forget, Nebraska had a golden oportunity way back at the end of the 1981 season to be the forst National champion with TWO LOSSES!

Nice "forst" post! Welcome to the board! No issues with your post.

I think what he meant to say was "Frost".

  2. Took this from Nick Verlaney's blog over at ShownTheRedCard.com.

    Husker fans, welcome.

What is crazy about this post, is that I made it once before, about the same exact day 5 years ago. The circumstances were a little different, though. I wrote my last State of the Program blog after the 2007 loss to Missouri in Columbia. Nebraska had just been torched by Mizzou on national TV, leaving many Nebraska fans wondering if the leadership of Bill Callahan & Co. would be able to ‘do the job’ and lead Nebraska back to national prominence. What came after that blog was blowout after blowout, the firing of ‘he who must not be named’, the return of Dr. Tom Osborne as Athletic Director, the firing of Bill Callahan and the eventual hiring of Bo Pelini. These were dark days. As a student, I remember just how tumultuous things were around the program and how it affected the student body in particular. There was a sense of urgency to return the football program to glory, and hiring Bo was to be the first step in that process. He was going to restore the pride in this program. He was going to get the players to play the tough, fundamental football that we had all been accustomed to pre-Callahan. He was going to restore the Blackshirts, turning Nebraska’s defense from a laughing stock to a feared defensive unit. He was going to restore tradition, calling on former players and gathering support from the fans to help this process. These were all things that Nebraska fans expected of their new head coach in late 2007.

Fast forward 5 years, and that sense of urgency might be the same after the 63-38 loss to Ohio St on Saturday. To be frank, something within the football program is not right, and hasn’t been right for some time. Saturday might have been the game that started the next wave of actions in motion. The Bo Pelini I saw in the press conference after Saturday’s game looked lost, and for the most part, dumbfounded. He could tell you what went wrong against the Buckeyes, but not much about why it went wrong. He wasn’t his typical defiant, post-loss fiery self. This Bo looks worn down, partly by results and partly by the weight of expectations of him and the football program as a whole. Nebraska fans expect a lot of our football program, and we shouldn’t apologize for that. The relationship between Bo and Husker supporters has been interesting in the last few years, and depending on who you talk to, he is the answer at Nebraska or he isn’t. Using those views, statistics and metrics, let’s evaluate how Bo has done going into his 66th game at Nebraska. (Full disclosure: I wanted Bo to be hired in 2004, when ‘he who must not be named’ hired Bill Callahan instead, just to put this post into perspective.) .....

    • Fire 1
    • Michigan (6 Offense, 4 Defense, 1 Special Teams) (2nd year Head Coach)

C David Molk, RB Michael Shaw, FB John McColgen, WR Junior Hemmingway, TE Kevin Koger, OT Mark Huyge, DE Will Heininger, DT Mike Martin, DT Ryan Van Bergen, CB Troy Woofork, LS Tom Pomarico.

if you're talking about starters not coming back next year then this list is kinda misleading, the two players I underlined played a lot early in the season but their PT was practically non existent once conference play started, Toussaint took over for Shaw and Hopkins took over for McColgen once he got out of the early season doghouse (he was suspended for the season opener and fumbled on the 1 yard line against ND), the number should actually be 4, the three losses on the DL will hurt the most imo, Woolfolk pretty much split time with Thomas Gordon at safety, I preferred Gordon because he was a turnover magnet compared to Woolfolk, we basically have 8 returning starters on defense so the number on defense should probably be 3...

next year our defense will probably be just about the same as this year because the improvement from the back 7 will be offset by the losses of our top 3 defensive linemen and we are thin there right now, ee improved a lot on defense this year so I'll take it, it's much better than last year, 2010 total defense...110th (450 ypg)...> this year 16th (317 ypg)...2010 scoring defense...108th (35 ppg)...> this year 9th (17 ppg)...

I didn't know that, thanks for the input. Yeah, your defense has drastically improved this season. I re-watched the Michigan vs Ohio State game last night and the D line was pretty good overall. Just might be our toughest game of the year and it's in Lincoln!

  3. Definitely a good year brewing. 10 wins at least.

I'm right there with you. Possibly 11. How do you feel about Wiscy next year?

it will be tough again, not much developmental time for our backups, especially at the skill positions.

Basically I see this whole year as a development time.... on defense. Now on offense that's a good point.

Could swear I've had this conversation once already. ;)

Haha, it was too good of a topic to pass on. I like hearing different perspectives.

We are a TMart or Rex injury away from a .500 season next year. We have a ton of improvement to make. A very tall order. Several guys are going to need to break out next year to get to 10 wins.

Oh we have the talent. Just haven't seen it in action yet.

    Recruiting scandal?

    The Tat-Gate/Tressel Cover Up thingy.

I think it's not just hype as we'll be bringing in some very talented road-graders for play now. Some vicious Dlinemen too.

Yes we will. It will be interesting to see what happens on the D-Line, specifically at the DT position.

@CornfedChris Good post bro. Always appreciate a little effort put into thread starters.

    I predict

    - Marrow will be the 4th gear in our offense next year, along with T-Magic, SupeRex and BlueFro#80, but he'll fail to pick up a catchy nickname.

    - The defense will surprise everyone and be darn good right off the bat with Compton and Stafford commanding the D and getting everyone set.

    - Urban Meyer will retire from football before we get to play him at The Shoe? but he'll be back in time to lose to us in the CCG.

Thanks, Had a little bit of time at work for a little Husker research.

Hmmmmm. Marrow. I forgot about him lol.

  4. Many are saying next year will be just as tough as this year for us. Similar rough schedule, Urban Meyer's takeover at tOSU, Player transfer rumors, "Pelini on hot seat rumors", "Pelini leaving for ______ rumors"... BLAH BLAH BLAH etc...

We lose 3 All-Americans on defense..... I just don't see it as big of an issue as everyone is making it out to be. Yeah, you could argue by saying losing Lavonte David is equivalent to losing 2 or 3 players, although the way he came in and accomplished what he did as a 6 ft 210 lb JuCo linebacker in the short amount of time he was given gives me confidence we will find a replacement for him. At the beginning of the year I remember Pelini saying he was confident in his defense and for once he felt we've built a trustworthy 2-deep of depth and I would agree. They are still young and developing which means they can only get better.

Nebraska has 6 starters graduating after this year. Kinnie doesn't count as he didn't start many games and unfortunately isn't a big loss for us.

IMO, I think Nebraska has an advantage over every team in the B1G when it comes to returning starters. Throw in the fact that our bench players are getting more and more hungry for playing time. Our Redshirt Sophomore QB is starting to develop as a game manager and with the amount of playing time he has gotten this year, can you imagine him next year!? And that Rex Burkhead guy. I know he wants to win more than anyone. Having him as a leader/role model to all of the younger players will only ignite the fire even more. Everyone will want to emulate the way he played the game with a "Never Give Up" attitude. The only other B1G school with more returning starters than us will be Ohio State... But will they be able to keep their heads high after a disappointing 6-6 regular season and a new head coach? It won't be a cakewalk for us but from the way it looks to me, we should be more optimistic of our team... I foresee great results next year.

    2nd times a charm?

  5. Great breakdown. Unfortunately, none of that matters one whit to what happens in our locker room. That's the point I was making - IT'S ABOUT US. I don't care how shelled or stacked the rest of the Big Ten is. If we can't get our players to perform, we're screwed.

Bo, is that you? lol But very true.

That's why it's nice we have a great role model/leader on our team named Rex Burkhead. Guarantee everyone will want to play like him next year. Everyone seems to play out of their mind when they play us so we will need to figure something out to fuel the fire.

  6. What are people going to do when we do have that down season and go 5-7? I do not want it to happen, but a season of bad luck, injuries etc. can happen to even the great programs. Hopefully we do not over react and pull a Pederson...
That could happen as soon as next year.
I fully agree. Now tell me why you think it will happen? The loss of David, Crick, and Dennard coupled with some bad defensive efforts in 2011? Is there anything the coaching staff could fix to prevent it or is it based on what we have and what other teams will have in 2012?
That is exactly why. We lose the three best play-makers on our defense. If our defense could take a step back from 2010 to 2011, it can take another in 2012. The aura of Bo's defensive genius took a major hit this year. He has a lot of work to do to shore up some gaping holes at all three levels of the defense. Combine that with a schedule featuring nine teams in the top 55 of Sagarin's current ratings (I know the danger of using this year to project next year), and four teams with a minimum of ten wins this year, and you're looking at a schedule that could be more difficult than this year's. We are scheduled for 11 games so far. Presuming #12 is some fill-in chump, that means that 10 of our 12 opponents next year will have gone to bowl games this year. At the moment the only team on our 2012 schedule that will definitely NOT be bowling this year is Minnesota. Could the staff do something to fix this? Sure, but then they could have done something after last year as well. We have the players in the locker room. For whatever reason, that talent on paper didn't translate to a solid defense this year. I have no explanation why, but if it happened once it can happen again. Only next year there will be no Lavonte David to save our butts up front and no Alfonzo Dennard to lock down half the secondary. We CAN do it. I just don't have as much confidence that we will as I did this time last year.

Forget to mention the struggles of other B1G programs all the starters they will be losing as well? Gotta look at the whole picture....

Take a look around the league and you will see 3 great QBs, (Wilson, Persa, Cousins) many great WRs (Nick Toon, Keshawn Martin, B.J. Cunningham, Junior Hemmingway...) and many others all graduating which could completely change the way their teams will operate. Based on the amount of returning starters Nebraska has compared to other B1G schools and the depth we have behind them we will be fine. Sure it sounds bad to think that we will have to part ways with arguably the best line-backer and cornerback in the country, but we will manage.

Bo will survive and Nebraska will too.

  7. You can have all the talent in the world, but if you have no idea WTF is going on, you're a liability. Hate to break it to you, but you're wrong.

Most Western Kentucky recruits know exactly what is going on.

Really? Are we knocking Brion for being recruited by Western Kentucky? Maybe we should compare the offer list of D1 schools for quarterback that Brion had, vs Taylor.

How far behind Taylor is Brion in "knowing the offense", anyway? A good deal of conflicting stuff there.

He's far enough behind that it's a concern to put him in. Bo's said it, Beck's said it, hell, even the "insiders" have said it.

I thought at one time earlier in the year Bo said he would have no problems putting Carnes in a game. Did I just dream that or is my memory failing (both of which are entirely possible at this point)? But if he is that far behind, why. If this is a completely new system then he should have been in it the same amount of time as TM, is he not bright enough to figure it out, or is he not getting enough reps to get it down?

Bo did say it, before the season IIRC. IMO, it was a fluff comment to try to build the kid's confidence. I'm no insider. But a few people who seem to be in the know suggest that Carnes simply has trouble grasping the complexities of the offense, the audibles, and struggles reading a defense. We have a "check with me" pre-play system, but he still has to know some audibles. It also seems he tries to force throws, which is the worst thing he can do. When our secondary is picking you off alot, there's a problem.

Again, I don't claim to be a special insider or anything, this is just what I've gleaned from a few different places where folks seem to know their stuff.

Thanks, thats probably as close as we're going to get to any real information. As to the forcing throws and audiblizing, as I think we've seen with TM, that is something you have work through with experience. It really suprises me that Bo would use a fluff comment, that just doesn't sound like him. But who knows, all we can do is speculate.

I don't think we'll ever know until Taylor gets hurt or until the year 2014..... That is until our coaches realize how much of a liability it is to have a one-dimensional offense. Ask ESPN.

  8. Taylor has grown on me this year. I think he could have played a million times better this year had we not been going through a conference and offensive scheme change, so I have to give him some credit. He still makes (as Bo would say.. "bonehead") plays every game that make me cringe such as his ability to cover up the ball when being tackled... but then he seems to make up for it by having a lights out game. I wouldn't have said it last year but Taylor has shown the ability to counter a defense. Before it seemed like he wasn't adjusting to ANYTHING AT ALL.

I've come to the conclusion that our team only plays "football" when we have the momentum. When we are cornered it seems that every player on the team seems to get too distracted by the crowd, scoreboard/score, trash talk etc..

Bottom Line: Our team is still very young and I only see them getting better from here on out including Taylor.

  9. Most people--me included--would rather see our current coaching staff progress vs. a regime change. We can only hope all eyes have been opened. A few things that came to mind:

    1) The B1G was there for the taking this year. Sure WI, MSU, Mich, PSU, tOSU and on a good day Iowa are all good enough--but none of them is a world-beater, not this year. Yet the Huskers manage to forget how to play (and coach) defense and can't mount even a serious challenge.

    2) Coaches (and fans) will expect young NU players to play at a high level next year and the year after, based on a wing and a prayer rather than experience.

    3) Thin and too small on both lines. Didn't NU once build line depth with walkons?

    4) Team speed on the field speed becoming a serious issue. Team speed on the sidelines also a serious issue.

    5) NU can't handle prosperity and mistakes multiply like rabbits. And killer instinct? That is a pipe dream.

    6) Many programs with no business attracting good talent do in fact attract good talent. NU is having trouble reclaiming its brand.

    7) Receivers who presumably were serviceable receivers in high school come to NU and might as well be trying to snag the ball with a brick in each hand.

    8) I said and heard "Where in the World is ____" more times this year than I can fathom.

    9) One stud linebacker can't prop up an entire defense.

    10) Playing in the Longhorn League this year would have been downright ugly. Thank you Dr. Tom.

    11) Saturdays, not as fun as they used to be.

    12) 9-3 would be a huge win at this point, but see #1.
