  1. Early season putting is tough for me because I need to regain my touch. My biggest problem right now is that I will leave long puts 2" short. Last time I was out, I shot a 45 which isn't bad but I can do a lot better. I swear I left at least 4-5 long puts 2" short of the hole. Dead nuts right on line and it stops just short. I gotta improve my touch a little more so that if I miss, it's 12" past..

I have a huge deceleration problem when I putt. I hardly ever get long putts past the hole. I don't mind because on long putts, I am just trying to get it close. But, it is a killer when I have the putt right on line and it ends up 1-2 feet short. I am just so afraid of hitting it 3-4-5 feet past and having a tough come backer.

This is a problem I have as well. If its not 1 foot short mine usually end up closer to 5-10 ft by. I've worked a lot on trying to get better at this. Can't seem to do it though. Which is why I asked the question about the putter grips.

If you have "speed" issues, the putter grips probably won't help you much. The fat, putter grips are designed to take your "hands" out of the putt so your hands don't pull or push putts off-line. When I watched Dufner at the PGA championship, he would generally do really well on lagging the long putts to tap-in range. Where he struggled were with the putts inside 10 feet (more on Saturday, when he seemed to be more nervous).

  3. A follow-up to the "fat putter grip", Dufner was a terrible putter 2 years ago, switched to the fat grip last year and it helped a ton. This year, his putting has been pretty bad. Even in the PGA Championship, he won that due to his amazing ball striking. He made some bad strokes at times on the weekends. Also, Furyk has tried so many putters the past few years and they all seem to be temporary fixes.

I think most good putters are born with good touch, feel, and can read the greens well.

The one area that my friends say I'm better than them in is putting. I personally think it is because of my attitude towards it. First off...I love putting. Second, I believe it is 95% mental and 5% equipment. I very VERY seldom three put a green and many times I'm sinking decently long putts or leaving them just for a tap in.

Up until last year, I was still using a $12 putter I got from Walmart when I was high school. I changed just simply because I thought after 27 years I deserved a new putter. I got a snake eyes putter that was made by a local guy and spent $75 on it and love it.

BUT, I still claim that there is WAY too much made about which putter you are using and what grip it has...bla bla bla.....Work on technique and actually practice it. Get a preshot routine that greatly improves your odds of hitting it in the right direction and develop your touch. When you get out of your mind that it's the putter and not YOU then your mentality about it changes and you can focus actually on things that make you better.

PS...as for length of putter. 33", 34"...35"....doesn't matter to me. I choke down on the putter so my pointing finger is right at the bottom of the grip so that I am absolutely in the same position every time. It doesn't matter if it's one inch either way as long as I'm consistent.

I used to choke down on the putter, as well. But when I went to a shorter putter, I actually had a better stroke. I agree 100% with the pre-shot/putt routine. I have been doing the same thing during putting for the last few years, and I have good success with it. I don't 3-putt very often and do a good job with the 5-10 footers. Of course, I went out with TeacherCD earlier this summer and I had 4 three-putts in a row on the front 9. It was ugly, I just couldn't get the speed right on the greens. I was leaving 20 foot putts like 6 feet short.

  4. Banderas somewhat surprises me. Good for him though.

Yeah, I don't he has the size just yet......maybe special teams?.......

I hope he turns out to be a solid play maker.

Banderas is thin, but he has serious speed. With a great motor and fearless attitude, he could be great on special teams. I remember when Grant Wistrom was a tall, skinny kid flying down the field on special teams as a true frosh. Yes, Wistrom played back-up DE that year, but it was his play on special teams in 1994 that stood out for me.

  6. Sorry to bring a thread back from the dead but I have been looking into getting one of those SuperSaver putter grips that both Dufner and Furyk used as well as many other players on tour. Can anyone tell me exactly what those do for you and how they help improve your putting?

It takes your hands out of the stroke, no flip or twitch or hit impulse. Think of holding a little pencil in your fingers, and then think of holding a 2 X 4 in your hands. It is much harder to manipulate and twist the 2 X 4. It allows your hands to be more stable and still.

So it sounds like this would be a wise investment if putting is something you struggle with?

Another common mistake people make with putters is having the wrong length of putter. Most putters sold are 35 inches. Depending on the height of the person, that's probably too long. I used to play years ago with a 35 inch putter, went to a 34 inch one about 6 years ago, and now use a 33 inch putter. Now I am about 5'10-11' and like to hang my arms low, so thats why I use a short putter. But, putter length is a common mistake for folders.

  7. Little Giants.

"The acquisition of Puerto Rico"...one of the best moments in any movie...something the T.O. or the Bob Father would have run.

Not to be a d#ck, but it's the Annexation of Puerto Rico. But that movie is a fun kids movie.

On this topic, I love sports, but generally sports movies are poorly done. I get too caught up in small details the movie makers get wrong. Plus, most actors aren't great athletes. Think of the guys that were in drama club and the musicals in high school. They rarely are the same guys who were 3 sport athletes in high school.

  8. Thanks for the list of updates, Watson. I am not local, but I know a lot of people are interested in what's going to be open for the first game. I still can't believe that there will be places that aren't open for the start of school and the first football game. That is a HUGE mistake.

Don't know how much of a mistake it is or isn't, but it was and still is an absolutely massive undertaking. 14 months ago that whole area was all train tracks and dirt.

I understand it was quite a massive project and they have made tremendous progress in the past year-plus. But, if you know that school starts in mid-August and the first football game is usually around Sept. 1, wouldn't you want to be open by those important dates? By opening in mid-late September, those bars/restaurants are missing out on 3-4 Husker Saturdays. That is a huge amount of business lost. If I was owning/managing one of those places, I would be pissed.

  10. missed it, can anyone upload some of rex's highlights or just highlights from the game?

You know there is this thing called the interweb. You should check it out some time.

why? no one has uploaded highlights yet so i'm requesting it

I am not going to get in a pissing match with you, but how hard is it to check NFL.com or ESPN.com or any other sports website? People want things handed them to them way too often.

  11. With only 20 some days left, there still is a lot of work left. Do we have enough time to get the Rail Yard done or even the ribbon band up in Memorial done before the first game? The second apartment complex doesn't look like it will be finished in time.

Most of the Rail Yard bars and restaurants won't be open until mid-late September. I can't believe they hacked and couldn't get those places open for the first game. They have to be missing out on so much revenue by not being open for the beginning of school and the first football game.

  12. Taking down South Stadium could kill revenue for a while. I am thinking that would have to be a three-year project, at least. It might even bleed into a fourth year. Plus, didn't NU put quite a bit of money into the building underneath South Stadium? I am thinking that destruction of South Stadium, while working to preserve a building underneath it, would be particularly difficult.

If they could start the Husky Stadium renovation in November 2011 and be ready for the 2013 season, there is no way it would take that long for the south stadium to get redone.

I don't know if UW did a complete rebuild, but they were also able to play a season at Qwest/CenturyLink Field (where the Seahawks play). How would you tell all the season ticket holders in the South Stadium, that one year you won't have a seat for NU games?

  13. I love Memorial Stadium, but I remember going up to my parents seats in the West Balcony. There were these row of steps that went over the concourse on the floor level. Those steps seemed to go straight up, and I would be so scared walking up those steps. It was such a good feeling to finally get to the ramp of the balcony. Before the skyboxes were built, I would also go up a few rows to the very top and look over the back of the West Stadium. I thought it was so cool to do that. It felt like we were so high up. Now, the new East section is a few stories higher than that!!!

  14. I remember this, and I too am glad that it did not get past the idea stage. Went to school for one semester at SMU (before death penalty) and they played off campus in the Cotton Bowl / old Cowboy stadium. Did not have a good atmosphere (but the beer buses were interesting - legal age was 18 at that time)

As a kid, I thought it was cool that SMU played at Texas Stadium. I had no idea how cool it is to play on campus. I am looking forward to seeing Minnesota's TCF Stadium. I am sure they are happy to be out of the Metrodome, and have their own place.

  15. Hell, get South Stadium renovated next and the place will be pretty damn new all the way around.

What exactly can be done to the South Stadium besides putting skyboxes at the top? I know some people would want a balcony added, but I think that would be a terrible idea. The South Stadium already goes so far up and away from the field, that's the last place that more seats should be added. I would be in favor of a row of skyboxes, but that's about it.
