They sure had to fight for it - with Tommie's blood clot, and Brook's injury.   Yet, there was a lot of grit on that team even without the previous NC being taken from them.  Yes, I have that same Unfinished Business VCR tape - while that was a motivation - those teams from 93-97 were all just different than previous Husker teams. Meaner, more determined and didn't back down from anyone or challenge.  I still think even if the 93 team had won the NC, there was enough pride in 'our time now' for the 94 team to aim at back to back.

I think the one that sticks out is the Wyoming game with Matt Turman coming in while down. This is a slip up that if they had won in 93, I don't think the overall buy in in the offseason happens to get over that hump. Wyoming wasn't great, but they found the right set of circumstances that sinks potential champions every year (injuries, turnovers, missed chances). It had to have took an extra level of team effort to back a third string QB and drag the team over the finish line. I think of 2013 Michigan State, 2012 Oregon, 2011 Oklahoma State, 2008 Texas/Oklahoma/Tech, 2006 Louisville, 2002 Georgia, 2000 Oregon/Oregon State/Washington. It only takes one game for an otherwise great team to be beaten and removed from the race based on what else happens in the country.

Something I always say, and firmly believe, when this topic comes up: if Nebraska win's the national title in '93, we don't win it in '94.

Having grown up watching the VCR tape on loop of Unfinished Business of the 94 season, I have always agreed with this. I think the determination and work ethic from the offseason was from having the previous national title taken from their hands. Without it, I think 94 is just another really good team that may not have had the right juice to finish off someone here or there.

Yes. And this is why Pelini is sitting home paying his mortgage off his his Nebraska coaching stint and not leading the next generation of coaches. He figured out how to defend the first wave of air raid offense. And those offenses adjusted, and he couldn't.

2009 and 2010 Pelini defenses were stupid elite. Past that, they were dinosaurs.

I don’t think he ever had an answer for air raid. Air raid has become more meta and that is why Pelini is at home with a paid off mortgage. 09 TT stands out because despite the lack of production we couldn’t stop a backup qb from finding his groove. Looks like he didn’t even get to start the next week as Taylor Potts came back. 08 Missouri ran him out of the yard and when their OC left they didn’t promote well within. We held VT in check two years in a row only to lose to a playmaker at Qb who was fine with being “contained”. Despite getting past OSU in 10, it took a full offensive and special teams game to get past the Dana Holgorsen lead air raid. With hindsight, it appears he had answers for “spread” passing attacks, but not the air raid concepts that now attack teams with lots of motion and man breakers.

Bo had good quarters defense, but that is a concept ripe for the picking by and good QB. We have progressed to split field defense that disguises well, but has run deficiencies. This is why we see Isaiah Pacheco get plenty of reps on the most efficient team in the world. The fullback disappeared so the H-back could thrive. Being able to exploit the weakness is the key and when you don’t want to pretend to change, you are already beat.

Two things I remember about that game (which have nothing to do with this conversation) are the circus catches the TT receivers made over and over. Fingertips on the ball? Catch. Blanket coverage? Catch. One of the only times that happened to that defense.

The other thing I remember was the TT Guard (whose name I forget) who really slowed Suh down. One of the very few players to single-handedly have such a huge effect on Suh. Kept their QB comfortable in the pocket most of the game.

The fun thing about that game is that it showed the future concerns Bo would have with his defense. It was really good and it put a lot on the offense to have the right plays/formations/packages to exploit it or a superior talented player/running QB that can't be schemed away. TT QB was a backup and "Sticks" made us look foolish. It was a symptom of a larger problem that would turn into a flood gate late into his tenure. Mike Leach doesn't care about how well you run fit and pass off coverage, if you are predictable in coverage he has you beat.

Them came Gilbert Grape :hookerhorns magically finding legs (starting the trend of less mobile QB's finding a running game when facing us) in '10, Wisky using motion to destroy our fits for almost a decade (408), and back at LSU, getting ripped up for gaudy numbers in an environment that has gone completely away from the pro-set NFL (where his system was made in the fire and was usually most successful) type league that he feasted on (QB graveyard) and everyone and their dog run RPO's and highly value flexibility in their play calling.

I tend to eat crow with bad opinions, but Iowa can probably with stand Tennessee or make it a mud fight, but Wisky is going to get burned.

Unless LSU’s defense continues to be absolutely porous and make Wisky look like machines of efficiency on offense. Oh boy…

  6. Yeah, it is looking more like B1G defenses were pretty good and the offenses being inept was only a small part. Mizzou had one of the best offenses in the SEC and didn’t get hit too hard by opt outs. tOSU held them in check all night. tOSU offense getting obliterated by the portal/Harrison JR opt out hurt their offense.

My favorite conservative moment is Governor Sam Brownback of Kansas from 2011 to 2018. They instituted a series of conservative tax cuts and the state party boasted that Kansas would be a "live red-state experiment" on Conservative supply-side economics. Ronald Reagan would no doubt bless them from beyond the grave.

After state projections of revenue were half of what lawmakers projected - only $369 million instead of the planned $651 million, schools were in danger of not getting funding according to levels mandated by law. After years of missed revenue projections, Kansas faced 3 credit downgrades on their bonds, missed state payments into various funds mandated by law, and eventually the public school system faced extreme stress. By 2017, Kansas fell behind neighboring states in nearly all categories: job creation, unemployment, GDP growth, revenue, education, etc.

After eventual repeal of the tax law after 5 years, legislatures who worked in Kansas went on a sort of public speaking tour where they went to other Conservative states and would warn their lawmakers about the perils of actually following through with supply-side economics. Brownback resigned instead of serving out his second term.

But at least Brownback got to be ambassador of religious freedom under Trump! Nothing like failing up your whole life!

We do have a renewed emphasis now on special teams, but we'd also be remiss if we didn't put things in historical context. Kick return numbers are unsurprisingly heavily impacted by recent rule changes but most of those guys you mention are from an era that's very different in terms of punt returns, too. Punters, on average, have gotten much better at ball placement and coaches are more intelligent on when to punt. In the modern game, possession is generally prioritized over field position.

There are teams that just don't see the value in practicing special teams and are content with just gaining possession and getting on with it.

I don’t disagree with you, but the “Just catch the ball.” line is reference to the fact that we can’t even do that. It is a whole third of the game and if you aren’t setting up returns, be good at blocking kicks. Happens even at the NFL level with the best and brightest scheming protections.

Russian War doctrine has essentially been "the Russian people can endure more suffering than you can". They had an official say as much just after the war began.

This is why most countries don't include women in conscription. It's not because men make better soldiers - women are actually much better at shooting - but because women can do something men cannot, which is to have babies. You can go to war every 20 years if the population of women is relatively unaffected.

Men are expendable to military planners, women are not.

The bigger picture problem is that the fertility rate is 1.4-1.5 and is well below the replacement rate of 2.1 kids per female. The tactic of being able to do a war of attrition is of a bygone era for Russia. Unless structural societal changes happen inside Russia, the numbers won’t be there for much longer.

IIRC, the ST really took off after Bo took over.  I felt like we always had a shot to break one in the return game.  We had some good athletes come through here those years for sure.

I did list 2 during his time and DPE being his recruit. Still not the game changers that I remember Groce being.

The phrase we had around our house was, “If you can’t Cheatham (cheat them) Newcome (nuke them). And if you can’t Newcome, Cheatham.”

Having a good punt returner does miracles when you play the punt national champions every year.

I was at the Ok State game in Stillwater that ended up being a shootout that Nebraska won.  TM had already built his reputation on running(ask KSU), but that game proved he could pass as well which caught OSU by surprise.

    Free Martin!

Watching T-Mart launch TDs because Okie Lite had spies and contain was fun. I also remember our defense/punt coverage not being great.

Our kick/punt return game is also an overlooked piece of Nebraska’s overall decline. Wiggins, Walker, Groce, Newcome, Paul, Ameer, and DPE. During the Frost years, we got down to “Just catch the ball!”

Fleming has 1 year to play and would be a veteran WR that could help.  Had 79 catches for 963 yards and 7 TDs in his 4 years at OSU being used mainly as a WR3 or WR4.

If we could have Fleming, even for just a year, I would be so happy! That would be like the Trey Palmer get, but on steroids! Trey had the profile, but hadn’t really produced when he came to Lincoln, but Fleming is a known producer who is just stashed in the most loaded receiver room in America. Yes, please!

I just wanna say thank you to Samaje Perine one more time for breaking melvin gordon's record set against us a mere week after being embarrassed by wiscy on national tv.

Underrated move on his part for the Nebraska community.

  14. I bet that good coaches are still probably only 60% or so of one possession games. They are more likely to avoid them all together.

Wait. Why does this have 45-47 on it. Isn’t he just the 45th president because of the stolen election and him still being president?
