Schlesinger Facemask Tracker

Detroit Lions fullback Cory Schlesinger is a punishing runner and blocker – and not just to the opponents who lie in his wake. The 10-year NFL veteran’s physical ways on the football field have resulted in 200-plus broken face masks in his productive career with the team, averaging more than one per game. This year, in limited action (due to a hamstring injury), Schlesinger broke 20 face masks.

Lions equipment manager John Brown began collecting the disconnected masks two years ago and presented the remnants to Schlesinger. Spotting the trend, the Nebraska native soon made plaques out of the broken masks – performing the precise task of staining, sanding, painting and inscribing each mask. As the culmination of his efforts, Schlesinger has generously donated many of the mounted pieces to charitable organizations, including Detroit Lions Charities.

“I think people like them because they are unique,” says Schlesinger.

As part of this process, DetroitLions.com will once again track Schlesinger’s running count of broken face masks for the 2004 season.
