ATLANTA -- Georgia Tech fired football coach Chan Gailey after six seasons, two days after the Yellow Jackets lost to rival Georgia for the sixth season in a row, sources close to the situation said Monday.

Gailey, 55, was informed of the decision by Georgia Tech athletics director Dan Radakovich in a meeting on Monday morning, the sources said. It wasn't immediately known whether Gailey would coach the Yellow Jackets in a bowl game.

The school has scheduled a 2 p.m news conference to announce the firing.

Gailey, a former Dallas Cowboys head coach, had a 44-32 record at Georgia Tech, leading the Yellow Jackets to a bowl game in each of his first five seasons. The Yellow Jackets are 7-5 this season and are eligible to play in a bowl game for the 11th straight season.

Gailey led Georgia Tech to a 9-5 record in 2006, a season in which the Yellow Jackets won the Coastal Division and lost to Wake Forest in the ACC Championship Game.
