LiLBigRed
NU FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: Saunders still in NU picture BY STEVEN M. SIPPLE/Lincoln Journal Star Al Saunders, offensive coordinator of the NFL Kansas City Chiefs, continues to surface in speculation about Nebraska's head coach vacancy. Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil was asked during his Tuesday press conference if Saunders was going to interview for the Husker job. "Possibly," Vermeil said. The 56-year-old Saunders also will likely be thrown into the mix of candidates for head coach positions with NFL franchises that opened this week. Saunders was head coach of the San Diego Chargers in the late 1980s. He last coached in college in 1982, as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under Johnny Majors at Tennessee. Vermeil said he hopes Saunders receives consideration for the open head coach positions. "He deserves it," Vermeil said. "He's done a great job of directing our offense." Saunders has declined comment regarding the Nebraska position. Kansas City (13-3) has a bye in the first round of the NFL playoffs that begin Saturday. Quote Link to comment
Eric the Red
I don't know much about this guy, but I guess the logically thing to do is look at the success the Chiefs had this year. Chiefs offense sucked, now its good. Simple enough. What was this guys record as a head coach. How old is he? eric "the red" Quote Link to comment
Redout
I read a great article on Norm Chow the offensive wizard out at USC. I haven't heard his name in a while. I believe he would make a great candidate. A bit old, but does that matter? redout Quote Link to comment
Blackshirt
I think Saunders is in his 50's. His daughter went to NU and played soccer a couple years ago. I do like Chow. Dont think he is too old to get things back to glory either. He probaby has 15+ yrs left in his coaching shelf life. Quote Link to comment
