Blakeman earns his (NFL) stripes

Clete Blakeman is receiving a chance to be an NFL referee.

The NFL hired Blakeman as a referee on Thursday.

There is certain criteria that needs to be met when becoming an NFL referee and Blakeman has met each one of them.

The candidate must have a minimum 10 years experience of officiating football. At least five of those years have to be at the collegiate or another professional level.

The candidate has to be in excellent physical condition and belong to an accredited football officials association.

A detailed copy of officiating schedules for the past three years also had to be provided.

Blakeman, a 1983 Norfolk High graduate and former Nebraska quarterback, will begin his 21st season as a referee this fall. He has spent the past eight years officiating Big 12 Conference football games.

From 2004 to 2006, Blakeman was a referee in the now-defunct NFL Europe League. He helped officiate the 2006 World Bowl game.

Blakeman was also an alternate referee in the 2008 BCS National Championship game involving Ohio State and Louisiana State.
