Reinstall the sound card (or on-board sound chip) drivers. The vast majority of the time when you can't click any options it results from a problem with the drivers. Quote Link to comment

AR Husker Fan
Well..I reinstalled the sound card and nothing happend any other suggestions? Wait - did you reinstall the card, or the card's drivers? What you want to reinstall is the drivers - if necessary, try uninstalling the drivers (you can simply uninstall the card from Device Manager and reboot, then cancel Windows' attempt to reinstall the drivers - download the latest drivers from the manufacturer's web site and kick off the installation yourself). AR Husker Fan
That's odd. Since the sound icon is still showing, it would mean that the OS is "seeing" the sound card, but that the drivers are corrupt, which prevents you from adjusting any controls. Â Before giving up, try uninstalling it in Device Manager. Then, shut down the system and move the card to another slot if you have one. Boot up and install the drivers and see if that does it. If not, I'd have to guess the card is toast. Quote Link to comment
strigori
Which settings are you getting into and adjusting? Some programs (like real player) will alter the system sound settings, in xp there is a sound mixing page, make sure 'wave' is not muted or all the way down, as that will mute the system.
