"Junior wide receiver Blake Mackey suffered a torn anterior crucial ligament in his knee during practice Sunday and will be lost for the entire season.

At first, the injury did not appear to be serious, as he jumped up from the play during drills and tried to walk off the pain. But further examination by team doctors Monday morning revealed a torn ACL. He will undergo surgery in the next two weeks.

"We all feel badly for Blake," head coach Gary Barnett said. "He was having such a good camp thus far, and it's obviously a terrible thing to have happened. Now we have to be with him, help him through a difficult time and work with him to get him back for next season."

Mackey was listed second on the fall depth chart at receiver, behind senior Evan Judge. In 2004, he was fifth on the Buffs in receptions (26; only three behind Judge for the team lead), first in receiving yards (417), first in yards per catch (16.0) and first in receiving yards per game (34.8). He also led the team in receptions of 10 or more yards with 19.

Mackey played in all 13 games for the Buffs in 2004, including the Houston Bowl. He made his first career start in CU's regular season finale against Nebraska. In Lincoln, Mackey caught eight balls for 116 yards (the most receieving yards by a Buff in a single game in 2004), including his first career touchdown, a 6-yard pass from Joel Klatt that opened up the scoring enroute to a 26-20 win over the Huskers.

Attempting to fill the void left by Mackey will be sophomore Reggie Joseph, redshirt freshman Patrick Williams, sophomore Alvin Barnett, freshman Tim Lemon, senior Marcus Gonzales and converted wideout Charlie Sherman. Judge and sophomre Dusty Sprague currently stand a top the depth chart at wide receiver."
