Alex Henery nominated for 2010 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

Recommended Posts

Lincoln, Neb.- Nebraska place-kicker Alex Henery is among a group of distinguished college football players who were nominated for consideration to be named to the 2010 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team, Allstate Insurance Company and the AFCA announced Tuesday. He is one of 112 student-athletes nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, the most ever in the 19-year history of the award. A 2009 first-team All-Big 12 selection, Henery is a three-year letterwinner for the Huskers and enters his senior season as one of the top special teams performers in the country. Henery has provided Nebraska with accurate place-kicking since 2007, and as a junior last fall he also became one of the nation's top punters. The Omaha native is likely to continue both roles in 2010, and has the ability to contend for All-America honors in either specialty. He enters his senior season 50-of-57 on field goals, tops in accuracy in NU school history, while also ranking as the second-most accurate returning field goal kicker in the nation. His 24 field goals as a junior shattered the NU single-season record and he is just seven field goals from the career record, held by Kris Brown with 57. Henery is also a standout in the classroom and the community, having been named to the 2009 Big 12 Commissioner's Fall Honor Roll and participating in NU's hospital visits.

In the areas of giving back and volunteerism, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team represents the "best of the best" among more than 50,000 student-athletes participating in the sport at all four-year institutions. From the nominees, a special voting panel consisting of former Good Works Team members and prominent college football media members is responsible for selecting two 11-player Good Works Teams- a Division l-A team and a combined team from Divisions l-AA, ll, lll and the NAIA- to be announced in September. ESPN.com will launch a customized Allstate AFCA Good Works Team web site featuring profiles and images of the final 22 award recipients, as well as unique and interactive content for college football fans.

The AFCA Good Works Team has included 10 Huskers who have earned 11 certificates, a total that leads the nation. Former Husker Dane Todd was the last NU recipient in 2006. Other former Huskers named to the team include Mark LeFlore (2005), Sandro DeAngelis (2003), Troy Hassebroek (2002), Patrick Kabongo (2001), Dan Alexander (1999), Jared Tomich (1996), Aaron Graham (1995), Donta Jones (1994) and Troy Branch (1993, 1992).
