Emotionally, It's been a rough last week or so off the field for the Minnesota football program.

Last week, the father of senior fullback Jon Hoese passed away because of a stroke. This week, one of their own has been hit with a serious health issue.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, wide receiver Connor Cosgrove has been diagnosed with an acute form of leukemia and will begin chemotherapy treatment immediately. The redshirt freshman had not been feeling well lately and the disease was discovered after undergoing a series of tests.

"Connor is a special young guy," head coach Tim Brewster said. "He's got a hell of a battle in front of him, and we're going to help him get it done. ...

"This team has been challenged awfully hard, but it's life. Dealing with life's challenges is something we all have to do, and we'll rally together and get it done."

The receiver is the son of Kevin Cosgrove, the Gophers' co-defensive coordinator. The elder Cosgrove was not at practice Tuesday after learning of the diagnosis, but returned Wednesday and plans on being with the team, calling the defense, when they take on USC Saturday.

"Kevin's going to spend time at the hospital with his son, but he'll continue with the preparation," Brewster said. "Kevin's trying to be strong for his family and his son, and he will be. But it's obviously a shock. We're going to help him through a tough situation."
