scarletNcream
It would seem that the biggest debate on the Northwestern boards are, who owns the right to NU. First lets just say,I really don't care but here is a little history. Yes, originally they were called UNW (University of Northwestern) and NU (Nebraska University). UNW was on their helmet. Changing the helmet logo often, UNW decided on NU in 1968, later in 1979 changing it to N and by 1981 settling on the logo we see now. Hard to keep up with all the changes. NU on the other hand put the NU on their helmet for the 1967 Sugar Bowl played Jan 2 and kept it on through the 1969 season only later in 1970 changing it to the all too familiar N. Prior to the 67 Sugar Bowl, the NU replaced the numbers on the helmets, in the same style as Alabama, their opponent that year. One last thing, it would appear that the Cornhuskers weren't the only ones to get a nickname from a sports writer, Northwestern picked up The Fighting Methodist by a Chicago writer.
