Forget the WCO... We need Defense!!

Recommended Posts

The phrase that keeps coming up is "Callahan needs his players for this offense". For just a second, forget about the offense. Our defensive gameplan and schemes are terrible. Callahan is definitely not acting like he learned anything from the NFL. Super Bowls are won with defense, special teams, and a running game. Patriots, Ravens, Bucs(which Callahan should remember) all play great defense. Its only in the college game that you can score 70 points a week and win with no defense. Our biggest problem is not our underwhelming offense. We scored 31, 24, 24 and 15 point in our losses. That's enough points to win at least 2 or 3 of those games. We eliminate the dumb penalties, catch a few balls and get a few first downs, we get into a rythym and move the ball.

I love the concept of the WCO. Its really just an extension of the triple option/wishbone that dominated in the 70's. When run well, it is tough to defense. It does take time to establish as a system, and needs specific players. This is no different than our "old" offense. It also requires good play calling and evaluation of the defense. It also doesn't hurt to have a smart and talented QB.

Callahan is more of a Mike Martz then a Bill Bellicheck. Possibly a good coordinator, not a great head coach. I think it was Bellicheck that said that a head coach is only as good as his assistants. The head coach should be more of a CEO and recognize the weaknesses in the staff. Some changes on the defensive staff could really make a difference. Success breads confidence. Winning a few games with good defensive play could give the team that confidence and a little swagger back.

Agreed, but we can't expect the team to just start dominating both sides of the ball. We something to build on, or at least something consistent to fall back on. That needs to be sound defensive play. Coz thinks he knows how to scheme, he has no clue. Last years TT game and this years Mizzou game where perfect examples of his "schemes".

Mizzou runs a completely different offense this year... last year Pinkel was trying to establish Brad Smith as more of a drop back passer. This year, they are running an Urban Meyer type Run-Gun option offense. Again, Coz tryes to outsmart what is an unconventional offense, and we get pounded for 523 yards and Brad Smith breaks the all-purpose yards record at Mizzou.

I believe KU held him to 33 yards??? Could our defense have been able to contain Smith with KU's gameplan, or are our players just that bad?
