rawhide
So the Mig vectored nozzles help them when they can't even see the enemy??? When a AIM-120D shot at 30 miles defeats them, what's all that agility do then? Lockheed calls their thrust vectoring 2 dimensional UP/Down Link to comment
HuskerfaninOkieland
Israel to make helmets for US F-35 fighter I completely missed this thread, but check out this helmet. This is the version the U.S. is wanting to use. It has 360 degree viewing capability courtesy of cameras on the aircraft. If the pilot looks down thru the cockpit, he sees ground, not airplane. But they're having issues with the NVG acuity, the timing between the cameras on the ac and what the pilot sees and some shaking in the image itself. Link to comment
HuskerfaninOkieland
There are B-52s still in service but thank goodness the US also has B-2 capability. Plus ~3x as many B-1s as B-2s. (They seem to always get lost in the conversation . . .) The B-2s are crap. They look cool and that's their only real claim to fame. Leadership is reluctant to deploy them to FOLs so all they can do is leave from the states, fly for hours to an overseas location, drop a few bombs then head back home in the states. The B-1 was never designed to be used for conventional weapons systems. It was built for nuclear weapons and have been modified for conventional use. The Air Force is now mothballing any BONE built in 85 or older. But they are impressive to watch take off. Side note: I took a ride in one back in the mid-90's. Nothing like going .9 Mach at 200ft across Texas. The B-52 is an aging aircraft with fewer and fewer parts available. And with very few original blueprints available, the Air Force isn't able to machine new parts. Tinker AFB does the depot maintenance and we are finding more and more B-52 with serious, irreparable structural damage (broken backbone for instance). The Air Force has no long range plan to replace any of our bomber aircraft. The KC-46 (-135 replacement) has been one big headache after another. The JSF has been a huge money pit. And money is getting more scarce. Hell, the JSF is why the A-10 is being removed from the service. They need to come up with some money somewhere and since the A-10 is so old, AF leadership has been quietly and secretly shutting the A-10 programs troops on the ground are piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiissed off!
