Dylan Raiola

I think with a full spring and fall as well as a heavy dose of S&C , TJ will do well. BUT, will Dana call a game that allows for his mobility. I'm still not sold on Dana as OC. Then again folks can point to poor OL play, receivers who can't take the top off the D and 1 RB accounting for 83% of the touches and still have the 82nd ranked running game might also be a problem for any OC. But what did he do to counter that?

As noted above, Dylan wasn't exactly beating top tier teams. He did flip the one loss score narrative or was that an AA RB....

I'll be interested to see how healthy TJ will be come bowl time. He looked hobbled against Iowa for sure.
TJ had a full off season by coming in as a true freshman to attend bowl practices (something Dylan never got to enjoy). Although injured, he missed some basic throws in the Penn State and Iowa games which are must fixes if he is unwilling or unable to run.

Dylan wasn't beating top tier teams by himself, but he was not the key cause of the losses. That would be our leaky defense, questionable offensive line, and poor tackling by several 4th & 5th year senior defenders in the back seven.

It seems extremely unlikely that a guy who's been an OC and a head coach for years would come out of "retirement" in the middle of a season only to be told that he has to run some other guy's system. He did say he still used a lot of the same stuff last year, which makes sense because you can't completely revamp an entire offense in one week. But if he wasn't allowed to implement his own system with a complete off-season to work on it, that would be a level of disfunction that is almost beyond imagination.
Long rant here but it is a Monday and close to the Holiday (Christmas)

I have never been one to be a quarterback couch potato (my favorite position) by second guessing the play calling in hindsight. When it works great, when it doesn't - you hear about it from most people/fans.

I do not think we have had a great OC/playcaller in decades.

As much as I like Holgo, I think he is more of a QB coach if anything, that likes to effect a passing game. Not fully rounded as an OC and/or the play caller.

I credit him for making the offense and the plays more simple and easier for the players this year. He earned that.

But I also do not think he can a read a room with his play calling instincts and decisions. Way too repetitive, especially with downs and distance.

This is Hogo's last year. He said last year that he was here for 2 years or as long as DR was here His seat is definitely getting warm to hot now.

However, The Huskers haven't had a great play caller / OC in forever.

Huskers OC / Play callers for 2 decades:

Holgorsen
Satterfield
Whipple / Frost
Lubick / Frost
Troy Walters / Frost
Langsdorf / Riley
Langsdorf
Cotton / Beck / Shawn Watson / Callahan , etc....

Can't we get it right for once?

Trolling at it's finest. Dylan kept us in games and won games that we otherwise would have lost without him. Let's not drag his name through the mud, just to fit your narrative.

Dylan led us to winning seasons with lesser talent around him. Unfortunately, we will almost certainly see an exodus of skill players ahead, specifically Barney.
Well, Barney was a disappointment this season and falls down at the thought of being tackled.

Dylan’s two best wins were Colorado and Cincinnati? Both out of conference. He got us to a couple toilet bowls.

Nebraska fans yes do want to go to better bowls but let's not hate on him that he at least took us to bowl games something that previous qb's didn't do just saying.

Many games with 2-14, 1-7….etc long of 10, 12.
He was a damn good punt returner, as goes to our coaching on that front. Also some good KO returns. Blew it against Iowa tho that couple plays succcked….

Could he get open? Was he open and we got sacked? Was he open and QB didn’t get it to him? I’d have to see full tapes. I’d wouldn’t be surprised if we had a fast twitch, 1 to 2 reads and let it rip, we could have had the ball into some playmakers hands.
I’d say the closest we’ve had to him was Wan’dale and when he left he had 94 catches for over 1k yds and is doing moderately well for a pro.
The things is…we just kinda suck and I think it starts w coaching then scheme then players then players making some f’ing plays.
Dylan was good, not great. There were many times we had guys open or in a hole but didn’t get them the ball the right way.

Short story long, if we get the right guy to get the ball to right guys…we can be pretty explosive.

I thought Beck was the last difference maker at OC. He was creative in his formations and play calling. I also remember liking a few things Langsdorf/Riley did with Cethan Carter. You are right though, it seems stale and not very innovative now. Truth be told, I think Colorado's new OC is better than what Nebraska has currently. It probably does remain to be seen if Dana bounces following the bowl game with DR leaving. Does he want the challenge of Lateef, Davila or whatever QB emerges from the portal?

Dylan was 10/15 for 91 yards against USC and exited the game while leading 14-6. TJ went 5 for 7 for seven yards with six rushing attempts for 18 yards. You can nitpick stats, but TJ did not look that impressive this year when facing defenses in the top 100.
All 2 of them in 21/2 games..?? 🤔🙄👏
