John Butler fired

he won a NC as a DC. can anyone else we hire say that?

Who the hell cares? Jimbo Fisher won a natty, do you want him? Bill Belichik won a whole bunch of Super Bowls do you want him?

Big outside hires have both flopped and succeeded. Internal promotions have both flopped and succeeded. There's no profile or "pattern" that is proven, it's down to the skills, fit, and willingness to put in the work.

1,000 times this. Smartest words in the whole thread.

Some “30,000 foot view” thoughts for people who are maybe empathizing with Butler for being fired or who are questioning the move by Rhule.

Rhule is richer than many rock stars & movie stars. He’s not motivated by money at this point. Rather, he’s clearly motivated by the idea of becoming an upper-echelon head coach. And he knows he’s far from that right now.

You can tell he really doesn’t want to get fired from this position. He doesn’t want the payout so he can just buy a house in cash in La Jolla, CA and sip Mai Thai’s all day forever.

He knows if he has a bad year next season that we probably can’t afford to fire him…but all of his momentum is gone and there’d be no way to get it back, just as was the case for Frost.

And then he’d have the stench of failure from Carolina and then the stench of failure here.

So he’s going to go big, even if it’s just to try to reenergize recruiting and our draw in the portal.

But he now HAS TO bring somebody in with experience and recent juice as a DC.

Don't forget that he has one the best recruiting classes coming in 2027.

That recruiting class, like many of our recent "good" ones has mostly WR/DB and just one 3 star lineman, zero linebackers etc. that are what the roster actually needs. WR/DB recruits can't win B1G games on their own. Rankings of a class doesn't mean that it actually fills the needs of the team remember. It is also super early, and there are just 6 commits. I think we need to calm down on declaring that such an amazing class.

You are the biggest negative Nancy on this board. If you paid attention, we have recruits that are helping build this class & its far from over!

At this point I dgaf about recruiting rankings or almost even, who is the DC.

Let’s hear about a $24M class that is signed and know for sure we are plugging holes with proven players. It’s an arms race for cash grabs and we are 3 blocks away from where the dealing is taking place.

We got our 5* QB two years ago. What we don’t have is either the absolute players we can pay for or coaches who can make a decent 3* into a good B1G player.

crap…BYU or Utah could make the playoffs. Vanderbilt has been a tough one last couple years. PSU curb stomped us and IOWA is just well, still beating us. Indiana is damn good. Freakin GMU wins games and Georgia Tech showed this year. Even Liberty has been ranked more than we have. Same with Utah! Are they paying players more, or does their coach know WTH he’s doing?

WTH are we missing?? Seriously, what are we missing? My first thought is $$$ for players, then coaches, then stop being spoiled brats with sold out stadiums and $250M facilities. We need some mf’ing coaches who put young men to task. And we need some players who want to work for a f’ing grind to get crap done.

I'd get rid of Terry Bradden as well. Our d-line play has regressed. We cannot stop the run. I know a lot of that has to do with not having a big nose tackle, but surely we can get someone better than Bradden?
Also I don't think he is a strong recruiter as well bc he hasn't earned anybody's commitment for the d-line all year. Not getting it done. I know he walked into a room of guys that were undersized but its his job to make them better. I think the d-line has been soft all year.

I think whomever they bring in if it's a name like Wilcox, Stoops, Symons, they should be allowed to pick their defensive staff assistants. Also, if they don't want Phil Snow around, Rhule should listen. Snow turns 70 this month anyway. Happy retirement or he is almost ready to run for Congress!
