I knew our returns were not too

special but if we only managed to

even field and try to return a total if 16 for the year thats not good.  we surely forced around 50 or 60 punts so we only managed about 30% rate there.  How many were not fielded at all and allowed to

roll.   Field position is critical to winning especially acute when

team talent is fairly equal.   I will say the return yards allowed is good but I wonder if some of

that is due to the poor punts going

out of bounds or in the end zone

Kick offs thru the end zone are conceding 25 yard returns.  ideally you kick the ball to about the goal line and make them catch and return it to inside the 20.

You do know that there is now a rule where you can fair catch the kick and take it at the 25 - don't you?

I can see why he left.  What has this guy done to earn that kind of contract? He makes more than Frost, and his assistants will make more than Frost's.  For that much money, Tucker was the best they could do??

MSU is in a tough spot right now and they have to overpay to sweeten the negative side of the current opportunity....

It doesn't matter what we might be by his sophomore year.  It mainly matter what we are this year - which is at the bottom of the conference.  He will likely sign in November next year so this year is all he really has to go by.

And even if he thinks we'll trend upwards, we're still nowhere near Kansas, Gonzaga and others that are offering.

I dont know if I see him signing in nov unless he is already in line with NU.  The state of nebraska is a big draw here and will keep him interested.  We don't have to be equal to ks and others we just need to show relevance. There is a lot of talent on the bench.

Neither.  I am the guy who was miffed that NU let one of their best prep athletes just walk.  But I should not be surprised.

BTW would you be willing to give me a penny a day up until the next time we see a high school kid come into Memorial and punt the ball 82 yds?

(Under duress, in his own end zone)

I mean if he just some JUCO level kid, that wouldn't be very long right?

I have not seen this punt but guessing it didnt carry 60/70 yards and then roll out - probably got a big bounce and roll which has nothing to do with athleticism (plus nobody gets a scholarship because of won play)

  5. It is possible to have more talent and lower class rankings. Skilled players are ranked higher than OL / DL / TE / LB .  So if one team stock piles skilled players their ranking will be higher then the team that goes for the trenches. Obviously to be the best team you need to cover all gaps with extra attention to the trenches in the BIG.

I'm buying more into the idea that a dedicated ST coach would be the way to go. Divvy up the LB responsibilities between Ruud and Tuioti, and go from there.

Because, as you said, it's evolving into a "pissing match", and those belong in the Shed.

I think Swiv likes to piss in the open

  7. i feel like issues with ST have been lack of talent more so then lack of coaching.  When your third string guys that are as good as your second string and almost as good as your starter you have a lot of options at ST.  When you have a lot of good depth at TE, OLB, LB, DB, RB and WR then you have some nice options to field 11 spots on ST.

I know I will get attacked for this (that is fine) but moving outside guys to inside is usually not good.

Inside guys are not awesome because of how they move...they are awesome because they actually love hitting people, which pretty much no one likes doing.  Outside guys are great because they love not having to square up and they can RUN!.

so this is a bad move? similar to when McBride and company decided to move players from their current positions to a spot closer to the line of scrimmage making the defense faster.  I actually love the idea of playing 3 OLB and 1 ILB with the 3rd outside LB playing the field side and give the tougher ILB the boundary.

Shanahan is doing the best of both worlds: using a fullback in a traditional I set backfield, where he can be a lead block for the running back, a potential ball carrier, a decoy, or the guy who picks up the first pass rusher. Or, as mentioned, he completes his blocking assignment and becomes either a first target or check down receiver. Or, as Shanahan did yesterday, he lines him up as a wide receiver and completes a 40 yard deep route. Tight ends usually don't do all the above.

Hey, I'm not the only one noticing this. NFL analysts love Juszczyk and have been wondering why more teams don't replicate it.  They also admired Denver doing something similar with our own Andy Janovich.

NU has yet to have a TE under SF that is long / strong / Fast  - so it will be interesting to see how he uses the rutgers transfer (voletick?) Next season. There has also been talk of some 3 TE sets. A long TE can be an advantage over a short FB. No reason an athleletic TE cant lineup in the back field and plow for 3 yards on a 3rd and 2 or chip a line man and then catch a 3 yard pass better then a FB.

Well, it’s fairly normal to play 3-4 running backs in a typical college game. It’s not normal to play 3 QB’s in one game, and bring in one of those QB’s for a play SPECIFICALLY called for him being the QB, unless it’s a gadget/trick play.

Well I guess it is fairly normal to run trick plays

    Ha!

I would have DIED if Frost came out and was like "Yeah, that trip was lame...I mean...I am a grown a$$ man and the s#!t I have to do to get these kids to come play here is driving me bonkers"

You probably will before SF comes out and aays or thinks that

As a hunter myself, if I was in a position I could hunt and recruit for my job at the same time, you bet your butt I would love my job more haha.

Problem is teach isn't a hunter or a diehard husker fan

I do miss living in NE and having access to plenty of private land  - nothing like a morning hunt followed by a mid day game

I bet Frost is lying and hated that he had to waste his time doing that;)

    *cough* @teachercd *cough*

Thanks for this post - was racking my brain trying to remember who went down that trail and didn't want to go find it.
