So I think we are now agreed that Twitter is a free speech platform and part of town square.

Who is "we"? Who is agreeing with this?

I was told on this very board that Twitter was a company that could do what they want.

That is still correct. The owner being a $h!thead does not change it. The people complaining are customers voicing their displeasure with the direction of the product, and some comments are dumber than others.

Newspapers were part of free speech back in the day. I remember paying for those. I guess we did not pay for the evening news with Dan Rather as long as you had a good antenna.

This absolutely makes no sense, what are you even saying here?

Was this link posted before? This is different than what @nic had posted, which alluded to a very vague comment which was difficult to interpret as antisemitic. However, looking at this link, I can certainly acknowledge the dog-whistle implications of it Tlaib's comment, and good for Dem leadership to call it out. She should have been called out for it and was.

Is there more? This thread has gone on for the last few pages with the certainty that Omar and Tlaib are antisemitic and have been able to get away with frequent comments. This one comment is bad, I will grant you that, and I would expect that Tlaib will never be more than a low-ranking congressperson.

But riddle me this, would the GOP ever call out one of their own for racist/xenophobic/antisemitic comments? Of course not. The Republicans specialize in and capitalize off of that sort of inflammatory horse$h!t all the time. And it doesn't stop with a nobody congresswoman, it went all the way to the presidency.

  3. The game isn't being held up by those honors/recognitions; they occur during media timeouts. So getting rid of them

I absolutely 100000% love honoring the veteran, and football scholarships , but wondering if anyone else thinks that the atmosphere could be enhance without so many delays?

Remember, I am on the fence.  The product on the field has a ton to do with it, and we are lucky the fans are even still showing up..... I am just asking for the drunk, high, foul mouthed, kid behind me.

Sounds like that kid was just being a d!ckhe@d. All those honors and recognitions do not delay the game, they occur during media timeouts, so UNL wisely fills the time with things that are good for the university and community. IMO, those little ceremonies are better for atmosphere than the frequent ads, but of course those bring in $$$.

If they do away with the ceremonies and fill the time with music, would that actually improve the atmosphere? They already play dozens of snippets of pump-up music, and trade off between blasting over the speakers and letting the band play the fight songs.

I took my 13 year old son to the Georgia Southern game. He is only a casual fan and had never been to a game before. I was in school from 97-2001 so I know what Memorial is like when it is rocking, and I was afraid after the Northwestern loss that the crowd would be deflated for the game. However, the atmosphere was still excellent. The writing was on the wall for Frost's firing, the product on the field was crap, and the ads and mini-ceremonies were frequent (sometimes they were cool, sometimes they were annoying). But the crowd was still loud, and between the band, the fireworks, lightshow, music, and everything else, we had a fantastic time despite the loss. The athletic department still puts on a pretty good event every week even if the team falls on their face.

Atmosphere is fine, we just need to win more. And the people who are honored on the field throughout the game usually deserve the honor; those are often priceless moments.

Hell, in the last few years, we've gotten Keyshawn Johnson, Kurt Warner, Les Miles, Ed McCaffrey, and Rick Spielman to send their kids to play for Nebraska. We've got plenty of star power leading us to victory already! Most of them even stayed for longer than a year.

Not to mention the influence of Larry the Cable Guy. How much more celebrity do we need?

I can somewhat understand the frustration, but Urban was not supposed to be the assistant’s parent either. To play devil’s advocate, Urban could have viewed the situation as it not being any of his business and simply assumed the situation would sort itself out. Not saying it’s right, but that’s how a lot of people think. The incident doesn’t even register on the scale of college football scandals either. How many times would you bet a similar situation has happened at other programs. I’d say it probably happens quite a bit, but it doesn’t always come to light.

We had a whole thread on that case when it went down in 2018:

Urban Meyer knew about domestic abuse going on in his shop, and he failed to report it. He violated university policy and violated his contract. It wasn't the same as the atrocities at Penn State, Baylor, or Michigan State, but there is a commonality: he knew something and failed to report it. That is what happened in those other cases, when reporting could have prevented additional harm being done.

You are either ignorant to what actually happened in this case, or worse, you do know and you just don't care. Given your insane rants in this thread over the past few days, I am going with the latter. It appears that you are not only willing to excuse inappropriate and/or abusive behavior, but you are actually condoning it as well. In addition to other things we have seen about Meyer since this case unfolded, it is clear that he is a horrible person.

Based on your rationalization of his behavior, your obvious shilling for Urban Meyer, your whataboutism with other coaches, and your various disgusting comments over the past few days, I can only conclude you should never ever be involved in any hiring or personnel decisions.

To me from what I took away from it was lets so called keep dragging his name in the mudd. He was already fired then you take the opportunity to keep dragging him. Totally unnecessary. If there was any substantial evidence he would be charged with simple assault but he didn't so it was all for nothing.

First of all, you replied to your own quote again. You need to be more careful about switching between your sock accounts.

Secondly, you are talking about "substantial evidence" and "simple assault," but that would all require the kicker to pursue it as a crime. The kicker did file a lawsuit for hostile work environment, by the way, but I don't know what came of it or if it would even be successful. But the point of the story is that UM is a scumbag, which certainly has been substantiated. If I recall, the kicking incident was also accompanied by some verbal abuse and threats as well.

Thirdly, even though I know that winning forgives many ills, I am still in the camp that says character matters. College football players, even at a big business program like Nebraska, are all kids, most of whom will not get to the NFL and all of whom are still trying to learn about life. Molding young athletes into responsible men is still an important job of a coach in my mind.

It will be the darkest day in the history of NU football if Campbell even sets foot inside Memorial Stadium, much less if he’s named head coach. Trev will have lowered NU’s standards to the very bottom of college football. It will be a day which lives in infamy. What I’m saying is that such a catastrophic event would be NU’s Pearl Harbor. Trev would be the Japanese in this scenario. His reputation as AD would be beyond repair. Such a hire would set NU back 20 more years.

This assumes that whoever the HC wants will require that kind of money, but the appropriate quality staff members need to be identified by a keen eye first.

Frost bringing the entire staff from UCF wasn't a money issue. He had plenty in the budget. But those were the guys he wanted, and they all got fat raises. A bigger pool of money wouldn't have brought better assistants, it would have just given bigger paychecks to the crappy assistants.

  13. The Parkland shooter gets life in prison instead of the death penalty. A lot of people, including families of the victims, are angry. This may be unpopular to say, but I think it is the right call. The death penalty does not serve a meaningful purpose, other than the emotion of vengeance. Even though families are hurting, and even though this a$$hole actually deserves to die, the death penalty does not solve anything and does not prevent the next shooting.

I suspect the safe learning environment discussion for that day was about  providing it for all genders. Genders evolved to biological sex and that is when the professor said there are only two sexes. I suspect this didn't start as a discussion of biology.

The student that organized the petition was not even in the class the first day this discussion happened. That student purposefully brought the same discussion up the next time the class met. How do we know that wasn't the heated discussion? That student obviously came to class to confront the professor based on what she heard.

Yeah, I think there is a pretty good chance that this is all correct. I still believe the professor mismanaged the whole situation.

It would interesting to be a fly on the wall for the debrief between the professor and her boss.

I've been a part of some of these conversations before. The talking points probably included a lot of the stuff I mentioned in my previous post, about being an education instructor and not biology, and about being the adult in the room and managing your class.

  15. 15 minutes ago, nic said:

What I think happened here was the professor was speaking about biological sex,

Okay, here is where the problem begins. Is this a biology professor? No, this is an education professor, teaching a unit on "Creating a Positive Learning Environment." Classroom discussions can go in all sorts of different directions, but why is this professor talking about biology? It certainly is not part of her curriculum.

Yes, sex and gender are two different things. Good.

    18 minutes ago, nic said:

and students started debating biological sex as if it were genders.

Is that what they said? The article says: "The report states that a heated discussion began over gender identity, and only one student in the class agreed with the professor. Most others in the class stated that a spectrum exists for gender and biological sex."

Where did they say biological sex was the same as gender? If they are arguing that a spectrum exists for gender, that is correct. If they are arguing that a spectrum exists for sex, that is also correct (even though it is certainly a very different spectrum).

    20 minutes ago, nic said:

Because of the professors opinions, almost all of the students felt the professor was not qualified to teach the class and wanted her replaced with a new instructor.

Well, we've got an education professor putting her foot in her mouth about biology. That's her own fault. If she didn't like where the conversation was going, she, as the leader of the classroom, and someone who actually is supposed to teach classroom management, had the responsibility to diffuse the conversation and move on with class. She f**ked up and lost control of the situation. "Creating a positive learning environment?" She failed miserably.

    23 minutes ago, nic said:

The student in question (who wasn't even there for the original discussion) brought it up again and then said she felt attacked or maybe unsafe.

Students do this sort of stuff all the time. Overreaction? Possibly. Didn't go in with all of the info since they weren't there? Probably.

    24 minutes ago, nic said:

Why not just engage the professor and maybe you agree to disagree.

This is a fair question. Did the student engage in good faith, or immediately go on the attack? Either way, the professor has the responsibility to manage the situation and create a positive learning environment. It's literally her subject area.

    25 minutes ago, nic said:

believe the university offered a new class for the students, but I have not followed up on it.

If that is the case, it is a reasonable attempt at a resolution by the university. Give the students options.

    26 minutes ago, nic said:

Can the professor still state her views. I guess so. Are their repercussions for her future? Not yet other than losing 90% of her class. Is that censorship...probably not, but apparently the students will get to avoid her.

Of course the professor can state her views. But there are always consequences for our actions. Free speech and academic freedom do not mean that no one can challenge your views. The students have freedom of speech as well. The exchange of ideas, even if it did get heated, indicates that there is NOT censorship occurring in this case.

Should the professor be fired or disciplined? Well....probably not. Unless she veered so far outside of her lane by talking about biology in an education course and showed that she was not capable of effectively managing a classroom. But that would be for professional incompetence, not for protected speech. If it came to a head, the ensuing investigation or lawsuit or whatever would certainly try to split hairs on these topics. No one wants that.

    31 minutes ago, nic said:

I wonder what the outcome would be if the roles were reversed and one student had disagreed with the majority of students and the professor. I wonder if the student would have felt attacked and been given the opportunity to switch classes.

I think this sort of thing happens all the time, actually. Students get in arguments, they overreact, they don't understand the nuances of free speech, they want things that cannot and should not happen (this person said something offensive, expel him!), and they end up disappointed when things don't go their way. But if a student is actually potentially subjected to harm of some kind, then the school would likely give them accommodations, which may include switching classes.

I would take Shaw. Funny thing is that Covid year might have been a good one had it been played out. He didn't actually get to play much with Mills and he turned out to be a pretty good QB in the NFL, even with the crappy Texans. The only question would be can he get similarly talented QBs to show up to Nebraska without the fancy degree. The only QB he didn't get fresh off the top of the recruiting list was Hogan, but made him work well for four years. Maybe Shaw needs more players in his profile and not high recruits he can't ride with since (KJ Costello transferred out, Mills left early).

Shaw seemed to have some of his greatest success with a player named McCaffrey. I wonder if there are any members of that family who would want to come to Nebraska and play QB?

Here is one. I guess we will see if the professor ultimately  gets replaced. If you simply believe and state their are only two sexes watch out.

On Sept. 7, according to the Bangor Daily News, education professor Christy Hammer allegedly said that only two biological sexes exist during a "Creating a Positive Learning Environment" class, which caused an uproar with graduate students in her class.

The report states that a heated discussion began over gender identity, and only one student in the class agreed with the professor. Most others in the class stated that a spectrum exists for gender and biological sex.

On Sept. 14, Elizabeth Leibiger, who is non-binary and was absent on Sept. 7, brought up the discussion again. When she got an answer from the professor, stating that only two sexes exist, Leibiger felt "under personal attack."

The facilitated restorative justice meeting was conducted, but students told the news outlet that Hammer still didn't budge, standing firm in her position that only the male and female sex designations exist.

In total, according to the report, almost two dozen graduate students in the class demanded that the university replace Hammer. They believe that the professor is transphobic, according to the report.

Reportedly 1,806 people signed a petition stating that the university "must support Professor Christy Hammer and Biological Fact."

"A university that cannot teach facts because students find them too hard to handle is useless as an educational institution. We the undersigned ask USM President Jacqueline Edmondson, Interim Provost Adam Tuchinsky and Chair of the Teacher Education Department Flynn Ross to stand firmly behind Professor Hammer and issue a public statement to the effect that she will neither be replaced nor required to stop stating the fact that sex in humans is binary," the petition states.

Honest questions for you, @nic: Do you really see discussions about gender identity and transphobia as a censorship/cancel culture issue? Are you prepared and/or curious to have a nuanced dialogue about these issues?

Because the issues raised in this article relate to the social and scientific dynamics of sex and gender, the role of these topics in an academic setting, the safety of students, and yes, academic freedom and censorship. There is a lot to unpack here, but to say "If you simply believe and state their are only two sexes watch out" and chalk it up to censorship is intellectually lazy and ignores what is really happening in this particular situation. It probably doesn't even belong in this thread. But if you really want to discuss, please say so.
