  1. Our countries economy couldn't sustain more lock downs. They have suppressed cases but are still far from eliminating it. How long can a country do this and at what price? https://medicalxpress.com/news/2020-07-australia-virus-cases.html Authorities admitted a second wave of clusters in Melbourne was taking longer to suppress than hoped. But the state's top health official voiced optimism that a partial lockdown of five million people, now in its third week, was working.
  2. But I didn't say it was the same. Your initial claim was that if one player was hospitalized, the whole thing would be shut down. I disagreed and said that players end up in the hospital for various reasons weekly. One case wouldn't be a death sentence. You asked me for examples of this. You over react to everything posted if it doesn't align with your beliefs. Step back and look at the current data we have. College age athletes in the best shape of their lives are much more likely to suffer serious health problems from a plethora of things that aren't covid.
  3. But Australia is still playing soccer? Is it at least possible that they understand that this impacts people differently? Average age of their professional soccer player is 10 years younger than the average PGA player. I believe college football can be played this fall with very little risk to participants simply based on the science and data that is available.
  4. One simple answer - age. Older people are exponentially at a higher risk of serious Covid infections. I thought you were well versed on this? average age PGA player = 35 years old Regardless of those outliers, and a few were above the 50 year old mark, the average age of a professional golfer looks like it's right around 35 years old.
  5. Where have I said it is like the common cold? Or anyone else on this thread for that matter? I agree, this virus can be serious for some-especially older people with underlying conditions. However, all the data we currently have suggests that it is extremely rare for it to have even a moderate effect on college age athletes.
  6. Crazy, according to many in this thread we were the only ones with an out of control problem. "The tournament was scheduled for Kingston Heath Golf Club in Melbourne, which has been in lockdown due to a large increase in COVID-19 deaths and infections over the past two months."
  7. ...... How would your scenario impact say a couple of SEC games? Your claim that the whole thing will stop because of one school doesn't add up. Kids do go to the hospital for a pile of different things every week of the season. Here is a link showing some of the examples- https://247sports.com/Article/College-football-injury-tracker-2019-season-ending-injuries--134411638/ One case of a kid going to the hospital for Covid wouldn't shut the whole thing down.
  8. Not answering for Mavric but offering my opinion. 1) Just because one hot spot shows up at a school doesn't mean the entire system would come to a halt. That school would be likely done playing football for at least a couple weeks and perhaps the season. 2) There are College football players that have to go to the hospital every week of the season for various reasons. Kids play football knowing that bad things can happen. Covid is just added to the list now. If schools choose to play, they are doing so with the understanding that a very small percentage will get sick and perhaps sick enough to require hospital care. 3) See #2 - Schools are going into this with eyes wide open. One person out of the thousands involved wouldn't constitute shutting the whole thing down. Again, if they make the choice to play a season, I don't believe they will give up easily. There may be delays, and it may ultimately get cancelled, but it won't be from one individual schools issues or an individual athlete.
  9. I don't believe it has been formally announced but it has been rumored to be in the discussion.
  10. If they plan to separate them, they have their work cut out enforcing it. I saw one of the student trainers yesterday hanging out with 30+ of his friends at a public function. There was no social distancing going on at all... The vast majority of the kids I know and see aren't even making an effort.
  11. Scholarship athletes are financially compensated. You can't exactly pay for an education with anything other than money! Ask anyone who has paid their way through school and then paid on their student loans for years if that was actual money. I wouldn't mind kids being able to profit from things being recently discussed but I don't think we should pretend that they aren't already compensated.
  12. Agree with Undone. I think a large number of people are somewhere in between. The average person in my small corner of the world thinks the virus is exaggerated to some degree but they also understand it can be bad for some who get it.
  13. I get so old people complaining and complaining about our country and saying so many other countries are so much better for this or that. I do think it's necessary to call it out. Door is always open to leave.
  14. I can honestly say that in my day to day life I haven't seen someone wear a mask in 2 weeks. Again, this is rural Nebraska but close to some hot spots. My son said he is seeing more people wearing them in Lincoln as opposed to a few weeks ago.
  15. I should have rephrased. Many of the articles I have seen portray the map in an inaccurate way making them click bait. In reality we aren't doing bad hospital capacity wise but the question is if they are at normal capacity (ish), and a % are filled with Covid patients, are other sick people choosing to not get care, etc... Something isn't lining up.
  16. Keep in mind when regarding capacity for ICU beds that most major hospitals stay at 70-80% capacity. Those doom and gloom maps are click bait. Yes, there is an issue because Covid patients are taking up space that is normally occupied by someone with some other kind of illness. However, the strain on the system isn't quite as dire across the country as some media outlets would have us believe. You will see headlines like ABC hospital is at 100% of their normal ICU capacity. In reality this means, they are likely at 70-80% capacity like usual. Here is one article I found while quickly searching - https://www.khou.com/article/news/health/coronavirus/houston-hospitals-ceo-provide-update-on-bed-capacity-amid-surge-in-covid-19-cases/285-a5178aa2-a710-49db-a107-1fd36cdf4cf3
  17. Kids need to go back to school. I think more harm is being done by keeping them at home. On a football note- my son's youth coach just emailed saying they have approval for a season and will begin practice next week. Right now it appears about 75% of parents are going to allow their kids to play.
  18. Kansas45, It's easy to assume no college football by looking at the daunting task ahead. However, there is enough money on the line just from TV contracts to motivate those involved to try very hard. I'm guessing we have at least some form of a season because money typically wins the conversation.
  19. Is it also an acknowledgement by the NCAA that while it's inevitable some coaches will get sick, they will still allow football? Kind of reads that way to me.
  20. This has everything to do with football and is the reason the thread was started. I tend to agree with many on here, there won't be football if people don't get on the same page. Whether the masks work or not, people getting on board and being cautious will help our numbers now and possibly convince the powers that be that the boys can play. I'm hopeful but not as convinced as I was a few weeks ago.
  21. I'm not personally complaining and actually don't blame Fauci. The WHO and many others were doing the same things at the same time. I think he was told what to say and when to say it to a degree. I'm trying to illustrate why some people are still not on board. Many people simply checked out after the conflicting messages and have a closed mind to anything, especially since out leaders at the local, state, and country levels can't seem to agree. Until that changes, the sides will likely remain divided to some degree.
  22. *efficiency of various masks - a guy in his position had better be an expert in that field prior to any pandemic. *asymptomatic carriers were well know at the time the recommendations against masks were initially made. *There were few changes in virus knowledge from his statements in March to April. *Much of the droplet size, etc knowledge has been gained and released post his mask recommendation. His decisions weren't based on science. They were based on availability of face masks. Once enough masks were available, or about to be available, his public stance changed. Basically the general public was lied to in order to protect the inventory for health care workers imo.
  23. To me this sums up the problem; Anthony Fauci has been the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for 36 years. He should be a guy who has run through every possible scenario imaginable and have complete knowledge on anything from the past. He made the decision to publicly state that masks weren't needed. He later changed his stance even though not much changed between his first announcement and his second as far as virus knowledge goes. It felt like a whim to many in the general population with very little to back it up. A good portion of our society stopped listening at that point and have been stubborn ever since. To me, the only way to convince those remaining that masks are necessary is to have a unified message from our country's leaders stating that they are necessary and why. I don't see that happening from the top down but I do think some of the recent prominent figures, like football coaches, stating the message are having the desired effect to some degree. I am personally not convinced that masks are the end all strategy to end the virus but I am doing my part. I think to really determine the effectiveness, we need everyone to wear them while keeping society open. If everything has to be closed for them to work, I'm not on board. We need our economy going... and we need football.
  24. Honestly everything imo. Covid-19 is controlling the entire football (and all other sports) conversation. There is a reason we are all on this thread frequently.
