Do some research on what coaches at top ten schools make. Both Cook and now Hildebrand are at the top of their profession.

I understand that and do know what the "going rate" is.  Someone has to be "first" or "push the bar" why not here?  We are flush with $$$ from the B1G and the sport makes money at UNL.  Why not have an arms race for V-ball?  I'd think that our fans deserve it and those in the program do too.  Everything does not have to be about football.  At least V-ball is good :D

  2. Tough to lose Miller.  She played in every single set this year and is one heck of a server.  I am guessing she wanted to be more a full time player at libero.  Against our top competition at the end of the season, she was lacking on the defensive side of the game and seemed to be out of position quite a bit.  For either of our liberos, the last 2 at Nebraska were 2 of the best the program has ever had, so they had big shoes to fill.  I wish her the best as she was fun to watch.

So, who were the 2019 season winners and disappointers?

(All making the Huskers’ journey that much harder, along with good seasons from Minnesota and Wisconsin and that place from Ohio)

Huskers’ preseason came in at #24 and... well, you know the rest. Disappointment team from pre-season hopes. Were initially ranked too high and did not approach Top 25 during season.

Texas was shown too much pre-season love. Another bitter taste for the Sometimes-Not-Too-Long Horns. Limphorns?.

Our journey at Nebraska is uphill, to be nice.  Even as our division rivals lose people to the draft and graduation, we are still trying to figure it out.  We can’t even begin to talk about the East as we are an even longer way off from OSU, PSU, and U of Mich.

If we really looking at how far people fell.....going from pre-season #24 to final ranking of around #100, I’d argue that NU laid the biggest turd while Tex@ss and Michigan may be unhappy, but are light years ahead of us.

There’s a million of these out there but our known opponents for next year in Mandel’s Top 25:

Gotta love having 6 top 20 opponents on the schedule!

So, what you are saying, in at least half (if not more) of our games next year, we will be underdogs going in, playing against a ranked team.  Getting to a bowl next year better be the goal as the road is not paved in W's.

  5. Meyer and Allick are both on the same club team this year and being coached by a member of the Husker staff (Jaylen).  That should help both of them get ready for the jump to Nebraska.  There are several other D1 players on their roster, so they should be a very good club team this year VCN 18 Elite Roster  I have heard that Meyer was late onto the club volleyball scene.  That has probably hurt her overall development.

Edited to add:  The VCN 18 Elite Club V-ball team is ranked #25 in the country right now.  They will be fun to watch this year.

  6. I'd have to guess, he would also have a "head coach in waiting" line in his new job description to go along with the new title.  Cook looks good, still gets it done, has one of the top 3-4 programs in the country and has a model of how to do it.  Terry Pettit brought him over when he was ready to step away and Cook left a very good program to do so.  I think the legacy of Cook will be when and how he steps away as no one can argue with what he has done for the sport not only in Nebraska but around the country.  The NCAA final four is in Omaha this year and Nebraska has a full squad coming back, it may be the right time to be thinking that way.

  7. I do know a lot goes into how a HS kid gets "rated" going into college......but, there is a big jump still and once you get past the 5 star guys and the top 4 star guys, it is a coin flip IMO.  Look at NFL rosters and notice where a lot of these players come from.  Many rosters are filled with guys who were not even in power 5 conferences or went to colleges no one ever heard of.  Once a player gets here, regardless of the number of stars behind his name, they need to be willing to work and put in what is needed.  They need to be developed by coaches and if either part is not 100% up to speed, you become what you see at Nebraska.  The number of stars behind our recruits is not going to magically fix anything.  As the NFL rosters prove, there are a lot of NFL stars who came from way down the list of the recruiting rankings.

In the instances you cited, the "soul searching" was bringing in a better player.

Seems Frost is doing a lot of "soul searching"........

Bringing in better players will help, but it automatically does not equate directly to wins......Texas, Notre Dame, Michigan should be examples of this.  Developing players, playing to your team’s strengths, learning to coach and adjust in games..just as important.

    Quick reference guide for "cuteness""

If play doesn't = touchdown or 235 pound RB trying to run over someone, it's "too cute".

Too cute is not even getting close to getting into the end zone on 1st and goal from the 1 yard line......but that never happened right?  Or 1st and goal and a pick 6 goes the other way, that can’t be too cute either as I’m sure Scotty never had either happen.

The good news about next year is we play are toughest games late in the year.  So our young guys could be decent by then.  Plus all this negative momentum could be broken and we could be 5-1 or 6-1 to start the year helping our recruiting momentum, and giving our guys confidence.  The optimist in me sees this coming year like Minnesota was this year.  We are still a year away, but things could potentially fall into place for us, so im not going to count this season as a total building year.  Minnesota was young but they managed to squeak by their first half of the year, build momentum, and really improve enough to beat some of the tough teams they played late.  I see us as a year behind Minnesota, and if we coach well and get some breaks, this year could go like Minnesota's did last year.  Dont forget Minnesota was not supposed to be this good, if Frost is the coach that Fleck is we have a chance.

As I read these posts, the next round of Kool Aid has been bought and served!

Ideally the offense will look like what we had to end the 2018 season. A consistent run game to compliment WRs who can beat you in space.

Ideally, we stop trying to be “cute” and trick the other team and learn to establish our will on the other team.  That, is play calling and coaching.  Up to this point, I have not been impressed with either as they fail to realize they are playing B1G competition and need to step the game up.

People all up in arms about the schedule or how it cycles makes me lol to myself and know they are Kool Aid drinkers.  I mean, did the Huskers of old care or did they just go and do their thing and told the other team to try and stop them?  That is how lost we are currently.  When the other team knows exactly what we will do and easily schemes against it tells you just how green/poor our staff is.

The thing is there is one common denominator to all those teams rise back to the top. It has nothing to do with their location or the temperature. The common denominator was they hired the right coach. That is what I am trying to say here, that is the #1 thing that dictates the state of any program. Sure having local talent makes things easier. But if you got the right coach talent will follow. There are tons of southern schools without good coaches loaded with talent but they are mediocre. The ones who are great have the talent plus they pay for a top notch coach.

Honestly the last 10 years the northern schools have stepped their game up and went after more elite coaches so you have seen an uptick in recruiting and on field performance. Notre Dame, Ohio State(I know they were solid under tressel but Urban Meyer took them to a new standard of recruiting and talent), Penn State, and Michigan(I know there are a lot of haters on harbaugh for under performing but he has recruited at a top 10 level.

I find it odd that there is 1 narrative that says northern football teams are done because all the talent is in the south, yet I think almost anyone who follows college football would say the big10 is the 2nd best conference by far.

The right coach is huge.  If you feel Nebraska has the “right” one now, what is that based on besides hope?

They don’t have the fan support or the institutional support like Nebraska. Minnesota hasn’t won a title since like the 40s and they have not even been trying.

How can people on here see Wisconsin with no rich tradition, same challenges as Nebraska if not worse. Yet they win 10-11 every year. Not sure how some don’t think doing better than that is unreasonable. They recruit in the 40s most years

The difference between NU and Wisconsin?  Wisconsin is better at being Nebraska than Nebraska is.  Add in superior coaching and Barry Álvarez and you see why they do what they do.

Agree. In retrospect, those expectations were way out of whack, and I think will continue to be. College football isn't what it was in the 1990s, and I've now accepted that any expectations of returning to that era of Husker football are a pipe dream. I honestly don't think there's a reasonable chance of winning a NC in the next 20 or 30 years, if ever. Too much has changed, and too much time has passed since the glory days. Too many teams in the Big 10 have as many or more advantages as NU, especially in recruiting areas (geography). I've decided to just enjoy the game for what it is, without dreaming about national, conference or even division titles. Bowl seasons with 6 or 7 wins, with an occasional 9-win season? I'll take it. I don't think anyone should expect more in this new era.

Great post.....best on this board in a LONG time.  As Nebraska lost itself, the game changed, the whole thing changed and we will continue to chase a phantom as what many Kool Aid drinkers on here want just doesn’t exist anymore.

So your saying by the end of the decade the best you see is winning our division. 12 years of Frost tenure that would be a failed job. He did not come here to win division titles, I don’t think division titles is the goal for a top 5 all time winning team in history. We have struggled the last 15 years trying to find the right coach but that doesn’t mean we are now Iowa State.

Yes, in 10 more years we may be a team who is a threat to win any game and until we actually win a division, my mind won’t change.  I’d love to be Iowa State right now, heck for the last decade I’d have loved to be them.  Our staff has a lot of learning and growing to do and the past 2 years has shown they have a LOT to learn.

  16. By mid decade, we will know if we have progressed or not.  I’d hope during the decade we could win the west, anything more is just the Kool Aid talking, nothing more.  Seems to be a lot of Kool Aid flowing on this thread as we are in the middle of a total rebuild with a green coaching staff.  Santa can only grant so many wishes at  once !

And you know why he expected better because he a winner.  He won’t be satisfied with 9 wins and a whale trophy.  He came he to swing for the fences.  First he needs to get enough players on the team to play the game.

And Scott and his entire staff need to learn to coach and stop letting us beat ourselves and actually adapt/adjust during the game.
