I'm going to wait until I see the results of this hire a few years down the road but I realize most will pass final judgement immediately and many will go into full attack mode before the guy even starts if their favorite isn't hired.

And compared to the parade of clowns that passed through AD position since Byrne left in 2002 TA looks like the best AD in the history of college sports.

I'd like to see what he does at a large P5 institution first before I declare he is doing a great job, I don't feel that is wrong.  All of your quick responses don't exactly refute the "we love former Huskers" thought process, just saying.  I am sure you will reply more at me to disprove my take again though. :)

Not attacking ya brotha like I said I am anti-pessimist so I don't share your thoughts on this one. I don't consider him a former Husker I consider him a professional who has earned his way to a D1 school. If being a Husker mattered I would want Mickey as Head Coach and I don't.

I find it interesting reading all of these takes about how Trev is doing such a good job and "I trust Trev!".  He has yet to hire any coach, let's see what happens.  This is more of the "I love former Huskers at all costs" mentality I feel like.  Same with Mickey and the "we must keep him for recruiting!".  He recruits WR primarily, which will not help us at all if we don't have Big Ten quality lines.  Does he recruit OL and DL too? If not, then it doesn't matter folks.

You should trust Trev, he has not given you a reason not to. Besides, this has been on every level an amazing coaching search. We are 60+ days in and no one has a clue. Even when the hire is made we cannot judge the hire until year 2. I know I am anti-pessimist but its true. One could never a have a meaningful relationship with anyone if you always think they are going to cheat on you. You have to give it a chance.

I think search firms have the following functions:

    • Reach out to agents and coaches who the AD has identified as candidates of interest
    • Reach out to agents and coaches not identified by the AD to gauge potential interest in the job
    • Help the AD narrow down the list of original coaches of interest to a select few to interview/discuss the job
    • Do the behind the scenes work of setting up calls, phone interviews, in-person interviews, campus visits. etc.

They basically serve as a conduit between the AD and potential candidates.  It helps the AD maintain focus on his/her other work while also moving the coaching search along.

I cant find the article now, but when I looked up the Lincoln Riley stuff it mentioned USC started with like 30 names of interest and used an analytics team to narrow it down to seven names. Those seven names were then vetted by the search firm I believe.

Reading some bios on the search firm it appears they have every tool a hiring manager could want at their disposal. The names for AD and coaches that firm has hired is impressive. It is no wonder we haven't heard one legit rumor come out in regards to the search.

I don't agree with the analogy...  those first few weeks being single were some of the best.

That said,  I think Trev likely had strong interest in a coach or coaches but there really is no way to have one "lined up" in this industry.

Just my two cents, but the search firm Trev hired worked with USC to land Lincoln Riley. These articles help explain what happened on USC's side with this firm and how the process worked. It can let you into the window of what has probably transpired in Lincoln as well. Now I do not believe for a minute that Lincoln Riley wasn't interested until the last 12 hours as I think that is BS and he knew.

Rhule, Kiffin, Malzahn, Leipold, Klieman, Chadwell, Patterson, Monken, Deion, Aranda, and Mickey.  Missing anyone?

Hell of a list, if we keep going we might have all 132 D-1 coaches as a possibility!  2 or 3 more weeks we will know.

Could be a chance that someone not even on the list gets the job!  Now that would be FUNNY!

We'll I would be pleasantly surprised. He is on the top of my Leader board. Just feels like a big, long shot.  But if Trev reels him in - then extend Trev's contract by a dozen years!!

No doubt. I do not disagree, but there is enough evidence that he isn't that content in Oxford that maybe the right salesman could lure him away.

OK Everyone - who do you think in your gut Trev will selection as HC?

I'm not asking who you want it to be but who do you think Trev will ultimately pick?

One of the options is  - A surprise coach that we haven't discussed.

Me:  I'm going to drink the kool-aide :koolaid2:and go all in on Matt Rhule.     I know we have a flavor of the week going on here for some time.  But there seems to be a lot of media play on Rhule this time around.   So that is who I think Trev will hire.  He wasn't my first pick, but I'd be happy with him.

Note: This post is made with the purpose of getting us to 800 posts on this thread by the time Trev announces. :cheers

I reread an article about the firm Trev hired and how the Lincoln Riley situation went down and it gives me hope that we will have that home run surprise hire no one saw coming. I think Lane Kiffin is coming to Lincoln. Steven Godfrey talked last year of Lane being unhappy in Oxford, then throughout this season Lane shows signs of frustration with the NIL and fan support down in Oxford. I believe there are two scenarios for Lane. Lane either wants to be the next head coach at Alabama and he will stay put at Ole Miss or he will come to Lincoln. I would be shocked if he was interested in Auburn given his Alabama ties. Besides the family history between the Kiffin's and Nebraska that we all know about,  I could see playing against USC as a motivator for him given how his relationship ended with them.

can someone gimme the TLDR on how the Rhule smoke has picked up the past 12-20 hours?  In scanning the most recent posts all I can gather is this is based off a random unverified twitter account, desmond howard's opinion (which historically, none of us has respected as he is a clown), and references to the UVA tragedy.  im confused

I saw someone post the information based on information received from the pay wall at the Platinum Board. Then local radio guys and certain media types were dropping hints in regard to some smoke rising.

Gotcha - so because it involved football players we should wait to announce our college coach.

I find it interesting that we have all these unwritten rules about what should be impacted and what isn't when a tragedy by shooting happens.  Not to be catty, (but it will come across that way)  life seems to go on for every other mass shooting daily, I find it odd that we'd halt a coaching announcement because of an event that took place halfway across the country just because the victims are fb players.  I get that their practices, regional games etc might be impacted this next week, but I guess I missed what happened locally after Parkland and Broken Arrow and Raliegh and others within the last couple weeks - is the impact really just driven by who was killed?

I don't think its an unwritten rule per say, but in the grand scheme of things it has a bad look.

He’s done this from game 5, with a basket case offense half the time. Our punter is an MVP which Busch brought in btw.

I am not hating on Busch. I feel it would be wise to retain him as special teams coach, I am just saying the stats do not support the heart. I like him here and he is a solid recruiter.

  14. 8 minutes ago, 84HuskerLaw said:

Trev will certainly help.  I’m gonna guess, IF Rhule is the one, that several existing staff will be retained.  He doesn’t necessarily have a current staff to draw from at this point.  He knows plenty surely.  And he’s likely had time to watch current staff work.

This is one of the advantages Trev kept by not rushing to grab somebody right away. He wanted a thorough search. He wanted time to evaluate, study etc. And to give prospects time to think about and study as well.  Only get one shot so take the time, research, ponder, etc.  And probably contacts with assistants’ agents etc.

I thinking/hoping a staff come together quickly, especially the coordinators and any defensive coaching changes.  Busch is doing an amazing job imo.  I’d say he deserves consideration for a coach of the year award by somebody.

I appreciate your love for Busch and I appreciate what he doing in a bad situation but coach of the year? We are tied for 98th in the country in scoring defense right next to Colorado St and Eastern Michigan

It's not so much that his favorite coach might get hired, but someone that will pull us out of the pit of despair and mediocrity...

In 500+ pages there's not been really anybody that I think has the ability to do that.  Right now Trev is just hiring a placeholder until an amazing coaching prospect magically drops in our laps.  (which chances are slim and none of actually occuring)

Why don't we take the Colts approach, hire somebody coaching at the high school level in Valentine, Ord, Norfolk, etc., and hire them.  Could it be any worse than it is right now?

If you haven't seen a coaching name in the 500 pages on this thread that you think can help turn the bus around then that speaks more for your personality than on the coaching candidates.

So did Mike Riley and before him, Bill Callahan ... The HC needs a strong staff to be successful regardless of what level they're coaching at. Rhule's success will only go as far as his staff. Coaching at this level is (and must be) a cutthroat job. Head coaches need to learn they're loyalty to staff's must be tied to success on the field. I like MJ because he showed he can put his personal friendship aside and make hard decisions. If Rhule is our new HC and he, like Callahan, like Riley, like Frost can't/won't keep sound, successful staffs then he too will fail. If the staff's go out to recruit players to come in and compete then coaches should also know they also can be replaced.

Why the rant? Do you have proof he wont or you just mad your favorite coach might not get hired?

I get you. I think Rhule is the best guy we could get right now. And that isn’t saying anybody better would turn us down. He’s been at the top of my list ever since Carolina fired him. Urban Meyer is maybe better but I don’t believe he was going anywhere (maybe Notre Dame at some time in the future) and Rhule has him beat by a mile on the ethics front. IMO this is the absolute best hire we could’ve made.

And I’m not worried about the ranked wins thing. @Mavric has addressed why that isn’t a concern. People also forget that Pelini was plenty satisfied with 9 wins and showed no desire to get beyond the 1-2 embarrassing blowouts that was part of the deal. Rhule does not strike me as the type to “settle in” to 9 wins being enough.

I agree. Like I mentioned earlier, I think the NFL dirtied up his resume. If he stays at Baylor (no offense to Aranda) IMO he would be considered elite at this point. We could be getting a bargain discount on a top 10 coach. That’s the upside we need to pay attention to here. Plus when it comes to recruiting it sounds like the coaches in Texas love him.

You are conflating "competitive games" with "ranked wins."  It isn't "ranked teams are good, everyone else is bad."

First, they did beat a ranked team.  Texas finished the year ranked.  Just because they didn't happen to be ranked the week that Baylor played them doesn't mean they were a bad team.

Second, a lot of why they didn't beat any ranked teams (at the time) is because they only played one team that was ranked when they played them.  They played Oklahoma - who finished as the #7 team in the country - twice, losing by three both times.  That seems like a pretty good accomplishment in year three.

Third, another reason they didn't have a chance to play many ranked teams was because they and Oklahoma was beating everyone.  The next tier in the Big XII was all solid but they kind of beat up on each other.  Kansas State was a solid 8-5 team that beat #5 Oklahoma and #23 Iowa State.  Oklahoma State was also 8-5 and beat #24 Kansas State and #23 Iowa State.  Texas was 8-5 that only lost to eventual-national-champion LSU by 7, beat #16 Kansas State and thumped #11 Utah.  Those are all pretty solid teams that Baylor beat, they just didn't happen to be ranked the week Baylor played them.

This entire argument is really missing the forest for the trees.

Your comment is money $$$. Let's not forget the success Aranda has had with Rhule's players. If Rhule wouldn't have been courted by the NFL, I think it safe to say Rhule may be coaching somewhere elite at this point and we wouldn't be talking about him as an option. The NFL dirtied up his resume perhaps to our gain.

I guess what I'm getting at is that his entire time at Baylor he went 0-11 against ranked teams in 3 years. I just want to be able to win some of the competitive games, and I'm not sure Rhule has shown he can. His ranked wins were 21. East Carolina & 20. Navy, for a total of 2-5 against ranked teams at Temple. His record was 2-16 or .125, so I was wrong on the total win percentage.

This just isn't a sexy hire for me, and is underwhelming with where we are at as a program. I just want the best for us as fans, and for the team.

You aren't looking big picture. If you get lost in wins and losses and not pay attention to the details on how those wins and losses happened we cant help you.

They most likely have an agreement in place. All the they can’t get anyone to take the job talk is BS. There are a 100 coaches and coordinators that would welcome the opportunity.  Trev might have had a coach in the bag 12 months ago. The search didn’t start after week 3.

I agree I believe the search began last year as well. My anxiety has made me believe certain rumors and change my mind a zillion times. My original thought was this has been in place for some time and maybe the ole search firm is working behind the scenes for high level assistants without getting them in trouble with their current bosses. The timing of the Wisconsin firing of Chryst makes me believe someone reached out about Leanard, maybe not us but enough to force their hand. It was curious to say the least.
