  1. hi all: does anyone know what ever became of doug wilkening and if he was on the team his senior year? i remember him as a part time starting fullback on the 81 and 82 husker teams. according to the roster listings on huskerpedia, wilkening is listed as a sophmore and junior on the aforementioned teams. in addition, i read in the web that he was actually drafted by the memphis showboats of the old USFL in the spring of 1984; however, i don't remember him playing for the 83 team when mark shelleen (sp?) was the starting fullback. the reason i ask this is that i was going through some old (really old) vhs tapes and found one for the 1982 oklahoma game. doug wilkening had a monster game that day and i always thought he would go on to have a really succesful NFL career. i guess not.
  2. Do you honestly believe this? I suppose Notre Dame and Miami fired coaches because they don't expect much? OU was a coaching carrosell after Barry put them on probation because their school, their fans, their alum, etc. all expected to win NC's. It's absurd and quite honestly a bit conceited to think the fans from NU are the ONLY fans of any college football team that expect to play for and win NC's every year. Carr is on the hotseat up there in Michigan because their fans don't really care about winning NC's every year? Please. Look at Alabama. They're so desperate to get back into the limelight that they go out and pay Saban what 4 million a year? We're hardly unique in any way in terms of our expectations. This notion is totally absurd. I have an old saying as well, "Nice guys finish last". Unfortunately, we're in no position to make any kind of coaching change anytime soon. I guess we like being the nice guys. If we come up with the bling, we'll have no trouble hiring a quality coach. i like your point about the "bling" and think you are right, but i am not sure the administration at UNL will ever fork over the required money. it would probably take warren buffet or peter kiewit to pony up the cash as some sort of donation. although, i would be surprised if buffet would do this considering his stance on the solich firing.
  3. thanks for this post. i remember this time article as well (i was in 8th grade) and absolutely love the quote by one of the great american writers (and native daughter), willa cather. if only that team had the defense of the 1984 team. the orange bowl would not have been close!
  4. hi all: i know in the wake of nebraska's big loss, alot of people on this board have been calling for changes in the coaching staff (e.g. callahan and cosgrove). there was even a posting where the question was asked for people to select from a list of coaches currently at other schools, which one would they like to have coach the huskers. however, when i was thinking about this question and considered the realtive difficulty nebraska had in actually hiring a big time coach after solich was let go, it dawned on me that from a known entity standpoint, callahan is probably the best nebraska is going to do for awhile. some may argue that with all of our tradition and success in the past then we shold have no problem in attracting a top flight coach, but if you honestly consider the payscale (middle of the pack), recruiting base (1.7 million people in nebraska), culture and location of the university (hey i love lincoln and the university, received my PhD there, but it is a bit dull and straight-laced) is it really that attractive of job? in addition, the two coaches that put nebraska back into the limelight after a 20 year lull, both came from relative obscurity. devaney had been an assistant at michigan state and head man at wyoming, while osborne was a local boy and assistant under devaney. my final point is that i don't think we will be able to hire away a proven division 1 college coach from any other school and will eventually be forced to hire some up and coming assistant or division 1-AA or DII coach that is hungry to prove himself at the next level. i also believe nebraska's current AD thought along similar lines and as a consequence has tried to lock-up callahan for several years. even though i don't particularly like the current AD he is quite shrewd and politically savvy considering the timing of the contract extension. he made the announcement after a blowout win against nevada and before they played USC. can you imagine the public outcry if he had made the announcement this week? anyway, i would love to hear other peoples thoughts on this topic.
  5. hi all: this fall my work will require me to be away from home on several football saturdays. i was wondering if someone could post a reply listing the best sites on the web (if there are any) that provide live audio and video feeds of husker football games. i took a look at huskers.com, but the only thing i could find was something called N-Side that provides both pre and post game interviews as well as condensed versions of the games, but has no mention of live audio and video for the football games. i understand that for the televised games the TV networks and the athletic department work out deals that probably prohibit live showings of the events, but i was hoping that there might be a radio station in nebraska that provides a live audio internet feed. i don't live in nebraska so i don't know which radio stations carry the husker games, so if anybody has a suggestion please let me know.
  6. I agree with most of what you have to say, but Shreveport. The Huskers have a darn good shot of winning the next 4. I don't see Shreveport in the future, I see Dallas or Phoenix in the future. what do you think, now?
  7. colorado made the big 12 championship game last year and lost and did not go to the cotton bowl. from their recent selection history, i believe the cotton bowl prefers to choose big 12 south teams. as a consequence, if the huskers are fortunate enough to get to the big 12 championship and then lose (not so fortunate) then they would probably go to the holiday bowl. of course, different scenarios to how the season ends up will determine which bowl they go to. if the huskers don't rebound against the ploughboys and the aggies they could end up in some less than desirable locale.
  8. Finally! People on this board are coming to their senses a little bit. We are not back and will not be back for quite some time. An inconvenient truth that I have not seen mentioned on this board is that none of the teams that the huskers have beaten this year have a winning record! In fact, their combined record is 16-28; a whopping 36% winning percentage. The only two teams of note that cornhuskers have played this year, USC and Texas, are not the same teams they were last year and the former has spent the last couple of weeks getting pushed up and down the field by mid-level Pac-10 teams. Except for one drive in third/fourth quarters, Nebraska could not move the ball on USC (I was at the game). In addition, Nebraska didn't exactly drive the ball down the longhorns throats either scoring on a trick play and a busted play by their defensive backs. The cornhuskers played great last saturday, but unless they are able to handle the ploughboys this weekend (I unfortunately think they will have a let down) and the aggies (better team then most people think) in college station then this talk of "being back" needs to go on a hiatus. To be the best, you have to beat the best and the cornhuskers have not done that of late. Don't get me wrong, I bleed scarlet and cream and have done so since November 26, 1976 (damn you Elvis Peacock!), but until we post some consistent wins against some formidable opponents, Husker fans should start making reservations for Shreveport.
