  1. A player gets a five star ranking for his play in high school and that is it. It is a recruiting service for earmarking college players, but it isn't intended to predict college greatness.

Actually I think that is their exact intention. They are rating potential. Otherwise the 6' QB with 3000 yds would be highly rated instead of struggling for attention. Hell, a 4 :star OT last year or the year before out of Ohio had only played 1 game and was getting big time hype because of his measurables.

But much like the NFL draft, it is an inexact science thus the frequent misses.

  2. Good read from LJS

NU hopes to make big recruiting splash down the stretch

By BRIAN CHRISTOPHERSON / Lincoln Journal Star

Don’t doubt the splash a couple of teenagers can make when it comes to how a recruiting class is viewed.

As another national signing day looms, the Huskers stand in contention to land a couple of big fish that analysts say would surely send Nebraska’s class on a ride up their recruiting rankings.

There’s defensive end Owamagbe Odighizuwa, with five stars to his name according to Rivals.com, and safety Corey Cooper — four stars for him.

Both have Nebraska on their short lists of schools. And some are even guessing aloud the Huskers sit atop their lists.

“Right now, if I were at the tables on Vegas and I had to put my money down, I’d have to say that Corey Cooper looks like he’s a Nebraska signee,” Scout.com national recruiting editor Allen Wallace told the Journal Star on Friday.

Cooper has been in the company this week of secondary coach Marvin Sanders.

And Owamagbe (commonly called Owa) just hosted Husker coaches Bo Pelini, Carl Pelini and John Papuchis at his family’s home in Portland, Ore., on Thursday night.

With Owa also considering UCLA and Oregon, some have wondered if the distance to Nebraska might hurt NU’s chances.

But Owa told Scout that his mom isn’t worried about that after meeting with coaches.

“After this, she said she doesn’t really mind at all," Owa told the recruiting site. “She does not care at all. There are so many other good things about the school, she can look past the distance.”

Owa, ranked by Wallace in his SuperPrep Magazine’s All-America Issue as the eighth-best recruit overall, said he doesn’t have a set time frame for making his decision. “Just when it feels right.”

Rivals currently ranks Nebraska’s recruiting class 28th nationally. Scout has it 32nd.

But what if those two recruits sign with NU on Feb. 3?

“I think it would firmly put them as a Top 25 class, maybe even vault them up into the Top 20,” said Jeremy Crabtree, national editor and analyst for Rivals. “Considering that Owa’s a top 10 player nationally, one of the best five-star guys nationally. You get a little extra oomph when you add a freak like that to the recruiting class.”

Said Wallace: “Those are the kind of guys that really drive rankings.”

Cooper has got all the tools to make football people drool.

“Kids that are 6-2, 210 pounds, with 4.5 40’s and 34-inch vertical leaps are tough to find,” Crabtree said. “But then when you combine all those physical attributes with his football IQ, his intelligence and everything like that, it’s a very good package.”

As for Owa, Crabtree said Nebraska’s coaching staff has to be credited for the job they’ve done recruiting him.

“They’ve been very professional, very honest and done a good job of not running down other schools but selling the merits of their school,” Crabtree said. “I also think he kind of fell in love with the domination of (Ndamukong) Suh while he was there. You can’t help but envision yourself in a very similar situation when you’re a kid coming from the same city, the same type of high school, similar situation.”

It hasn’t all been praise for Husker recruiting.

Tom Luginbill, the national recruiting director for ESPN Scouts Inc., mentioned in a recent newspaper report that he’s surprised Nebraska’s class “isn’t more fruitful, especially on the offensive side of the ball.”

He said he doesn’t think Nebraska is bringing in the guys on offense that scare teams or create mismatches.

It’s just a matter of perspective.

From Crabtree’s view, Nebraska has done well at offensive recruiting, noting the commitments from running back Braylon Heard (rated by Rivals as the No. 5 running back in the country), junior college tight end Chase Harper, and wide receiver Quincy Enunwa. Crabtree thinks Enunwa could be “a helluva steal.”

Nebraska is hosting quarterback Brion Carnes (Manatee, Fla.) this weekend. Carnes has four stars, according to Rivals, and seems to be NU’s top target for a QB in this class.

Carnes. Cooper. Owa. How many of those three will end up Huskers?

Such is the suspense that that comes this time of year.

“There are amazing surprises,” Wallace said. “You think you know what’s going to happen. The charming thing about letter-of-intent day is that you find out that you don’t.”

  3. This doesn't change the fact that Nebraska offered most of the 5 :star WRS this year. Now, they might rate the guys we got at the same level as those guys, but it doesn't change the fact that Nebraska wanted those 5 :star guys. Maybe Nebraska did not offer certain highly rated players or cooled off on some they did offer because of character, but I think there are highly rated players we missed on that we will get in future years.

  4. Well I was exaggerating a bit. But most of the time when you come up with some big "information," it was usually posted on HuskersIllustrated an hour or so earlier. Tim_may is a good source of information, give him the credit.

Welcome to the board, Tim. :sarcasm

Links or it didn't happen. :)

  5. Welcome guests. Feel free to stick around, peruse the other subforums, and register if you'd like to contribute to the conversation.

Make sure you come back Feb 3rd for complete signing day coverage and up to the minute news including when Owa faxes in his LOI.

  6. There is some legitimacy to the criticism. As I mentioned before, if you look at the offer list, Nebraska offered a lot of very highly rated QBs and WRs and pretty much struck out for various reasons. Now the guys we got at WR may be exactly what we need, but I'm pretty sure Bo would have loved to have Darius White in this class.

OTOH do an image search on Tom Luginbill and you'll find this:

  7. So did we decide 20 year olds can still post on this board? I just signed up and was all pumped to talk Husker talk with all these cool personalities I've been observing for a while now.

Tom Luginbill-er whatever can say whatever he wants. I'm pretty proud of this class. Especially if Coop and Owa join the fray, no disappointment from this fella.

Welcome to the Board T-Husker! Don't be shy, jump right in! Just a few rules you should abide by. First of all, make sure you have an opinion on Callahan and Solich and be sure to start numerous threads thumping your position. Second, make sure that you have a definite stance on Recruiting Rankings. Be sure to start threads and post frequently thumping your position. Third, pick a position on Blackouts and be sure to post often thumping your position. Finally, learn to have age stereotypes regarding posters. If you are young, make sure that you call all old posters fuddy duddies. They love that one, trust me. Have fun! :sarcasm

  8. Any word on his visit to Oregon?? I just looked on their rivals page and they didn't have anything up.

Not really new on the Oregon board but I copied this posted and the Oregon board(one poster) seems to think UCLA is out of it.

Not sure why but that would make it a two horse race.

Not sure why they are stating UCLA is out of it. (they have a huge Nigerian popluation)

So, it's really between the two in-state schools. That's what the rumors are at least.

Owa is talent. Wherever he goes, he will succeed. If he doens't come to Oregon, I'd rather see him go to Nebraska...I don't want to face him every year!

lol everyone is swinging at air in this thread. Just stop while your (relatively) ahead

Yup...go on thinking that...and as of yesterday, he eliminated Oregon State.

In actuality, he's down to Nebraska and Oregon. Distance is a factor. I want to see you come here and eat crow IF he chooses Oregon. I will be just as happy for the kid IF he chooses Nebraska...he can't go wrong with either school.

You, on the other hand, are a DB.

I see they maintain a level of friendly discourse over there. :lol

  9. Anyone know for sure what is going on with Bronson? I have heard Greyshirt, Walk on, and even that we are stringing him along a bit.

Think he's still waiting for everything else to resolve itself. My guess is if we strike out on everyone else, he gets an offer.

  10. All these services do is report what the players or their coaches tell them. Any other speculation they do isn't worth the subscription you need to read it.

Or rather "All these services are good for is reporting what players tell them."

  11. you think with the holy grail of ESPN backing scout up they would be more on it with their recruiting info and and evaluations.....

make you wonder about some of the guys on the so called espn 150 or whatever.......

Oh snap. All of the links are broken. I'll see what we can do about that.

  14. Someone needs to bring the "return to top of page" button back to the forums..... It takes forever to scroll down to the bottom and then have to scroll all the way back up the the top just to read one post and then go somewhere else?

Umm Home and End buttons? :)

    I don't see those anywhere...

    On your keyboard. :lol

Works on Chrome and Firefox, anyway.

    IE? :dunno

Not saying it wouldn't be handy to have a link, but I find I use the home and end keys way more.

  15. Large Payments? Why does it hurt us to give them 1.5 million? Just roughly 85,000 people x $55 = 4,675,000

We can't pay them that?? give me a f'ing break, give them the money. They are a legit program and it would be well worth the show.

And yes our non-conference is bullsh#t, and anyone on here who defends it is lieing to themselves. I understand it still has a lot to do with Pederson, but damn, what a rip off to us.

I'll defend it. I think the strategy has been to schedule one marquee opponent (see USC or VaTech), one mid-tier opponent, and two cupcakes. It hasn't worked that way each year but I think that is the general strategy. EVERY elite team does it. Check out Texas (La-Monroe, Wyoming, UTEP, UCF) and Alabama's (VaTech, FIU, North Texas, Chattanooga) non-conference schedules. Those schedules were strong enough for those teams to play in the national title game.

I'll admit from a purely game to game standpoint it would be more entertaining to watch marguee schools in the non-conference schedule. However, from a program standpoint our current scheduling is the best option.

(Your comment about paying out 1.5 million dollars doesn't even deserve a response. Boise thinks they are a big time program. Time to start acting like it.)

It doesn't deserve a response?? Nice one. Good job. Way to debate. How much does Nebraska ask for on the road games? You're a f'ing idiot. Boise thinks they are a Big time program? Time to start acting like it? Yes they act like it and ask for more money. They have expenses too and IMO 1.5 doesn't sound that much at all in relativity to the entire income of the day.

All the "elite" teams are doing it?? Who gives a sh#t what they are doing, We are Nebraska, not EVERY elite team in the country. as a Husker fan I want to watch some good football, not watch us stop some sh#t hole school and watch 85000 people shuffle into Memorial Stadium and get ripped off 3/4 games in a row. What a joke. If it continues I hope Husker Fans smart up and stop showing up.

Warning level changed. Do not call names.

  16. Well, while there is no proof in print, I don't doubt the stories. These are young guys that are in college...and I remember what college was like. They have also been the center of attention for their whole lives, and popular. So, I could see them getting plenty of invites to parties involving drugs or drinking. I mean - what else is there to do in your down time in college? Study?

    :LOLtartar

Sex. That can also lead to troubles tho.. ask Pat Witt.
