More from the the Omaha World-Herald interview with Harvey Perlman:
Q. Did Nebraska get manipulated by people in Arkansas when it tried to talk to Coach Houston Nutt?
A. Yes, I think so. There were a lot of people who have interests here. There is a standard of behavior in this business that obliges us to talk to their athletic director (Frank Broyles) before you talk to a coach. That leaves you vulnerable. It was unfortunate, and certainly created unfortunate perceptions about what we were doing, and I regret those perceptions.
Q. The big thing seemed to be the Arkansas rumor that we were offering $2 million or more to hire Nutt. Are you satisfied that that never happened?
A. I'm not only satisfied, I know that nobody at this university authorized or made such an offer, and I'm not playing games with definitions about what is or is not an offer. There is a lot of misunderstanding about the way this dance is conducted. When talking to potential candidates, you tell them the range of salaries you are thinking about in case you ultimately offer them a job. There was never any conversation that exceeded $1.5 million.
Q. Did you hear from a lot of people when that rumor was made public?
A. Oh, yes. And understandably so. People did not give us the benefit of the doubt about some of the speculation that was surfacing, and that was unfortunate.
