  1. One thing I forgot to mention is Heritage Hall, which is located in Gallagher-Iba Arena (which is on the east side of the stadium). It is essentially a museum of OSU Athletics (Barry's Heisman, Final Four stuff, etc.). 95Huskers, I'm not sure there's an 'official' place where visiting fans tailgate. Occasionally, I've seen the opposing team have an area in the Wes Watkins building, but I'm sure it can change. Like I said, you are more than welcome to join the orangepower.com & ostatesports.com combined tailgate. You can find an announcement and map HERE. Great group of folks there, and very welcoming to visitors.
  2. That's a good question about getting from Stillwater to Perry. The bars close at 2am. There is limited taxi service, but I don't know how far they would drive. Perry is known for Charles Machine Works (aka Ditch Witch), and very little else. 95husker - There is a quirky place to eat in Ponca City called The Rusty Barrell (sic). The entrance is in an alleyway. You have to knock on the door, the host slides open a little door, and asks you what you want. "Reservation for Dr. RosenRosen". Heh. Anyway, good steaks, reasonably priced. Don't know if you've ever heard of Head Country BBQ, but it's based in PC. Dougan's BBQ is also there. Both are better than any BBQ you might find in Stillwater.
  3. And if you do get to town on Friday, I encourage you to enjoy Homecoming walkaround. There's nothing quite like it. It starts about dusk and goes as long as you want to walk around the various house decorations then off to the bars that are very near by.
  4. KC, the whole campus turns into one big tailgate for games. The OSU forum I frequent, www.ostatesports.com, and the biggest OSU forum, www.orangepower.com, sponsor a huge tailgate. 'Official' announcement HERE. Please stop by - visitors are always welcome. I usually stop by that tailgate for a short bit, but have my own smaller tailgate with several other families. OSU is officially a dry campus, but mysteriously turns into one giant beer can on game day. Open container laws are not enforced unless people are unruly or underage (and they do enforce both of those pretty regularly).
  5. Good morning, y'all. Are many of you making the trip to Stillwater this Saturday? As you have probably heard, this is our homecoming game. Gone are the Big 8 days of rotating KU/KSU/ISU to virtually assure a homecoming win (never mind the fact that they scheduled us, as well) . Noooo...we have to schedule Big Red. And I can't wait! I am going to miss having Nebraska in the Texas Big 12 though. Going to a game in Lincoln was my favorite of all the Big 12 away games I've attended over the years. Parking: Standard game day cluster. There are lots of places that sell parking close by for $10-30 - rental house yards, churches, etc. The City of Stillwater offers free parking downtown and rides to the stadium, info here. Places to eat/drink...I've bolded my favorites: If you take advantage of the free parking downtown, there are a couple of options. Louie's Grill and Bar - 7th & Main. Localish chain. Has a great bar. Burgers, pizzas, salads, sammiches. Aspen Coffee - Only a few food options, but good for your caffeine fix. Cafe Bella - Sandwiches, wraps, salads. Going south from the stadium on Knoblock: Eskimo Joe's - 2 blocks south of the stadium. Typical bar food. I bolded it because, well, it's Eskimo Joe's. It's within sight of the stadium, so it will be insanely packed. If you come to Stillwater, but don't have tickets and can't find them, it's a good place to watch the game. Stonewall Tavern - Good college bar. Smokey as hell. Luckily, they do have an outside seating area. Qdoba - Straight south of the stadium on Knoblock just a few blocks. Subway - Across street to south of Qdoba. Cafe 88 - Chinese. Get takeout, as it's tough to get a seat even on regular days. Hideaway Pizza. This is one of my favorite places and is about 4-5 blocks south of the stadium on Knoblock. On Friday night and all day Saturday, it will be constantly busy. My favorite coffee place in Stillwater is in the west end of the Hideaway, The Daily Grind. Rancher's Club - It's the hotel restaurant for the on-campus hotel and does really good steaks. You must have a reservation. Pricey. The Strip is where most of our bars are located. It's south of the stadium on Washington St. If Washington St were to run straight north into campus, it would run right into the library, to give you a perspective of where it is. My favorite place to eat on the strip is Crepe Myrtle, which has the best burgers in town, IMHO. There are a smattering of other places to eat on the strip (Pita Pit, Lushberry Yogurt, Coney Island, Kruzin Burger). Going east from the stadium: From about 2 blocks from the stadium going about 1/2 mile straight east of the stadium on Hall of Fame is a row of several restaurants, most of which are chains. In approximate order going east from the stadium, you'll find Panera Bread, Old School Bagel (fantastic local bagel shop, next door is a frozen yogurt place), Red Lobster, McAlister's Deli, Chili's, Joseppi's (Italian), Mexico Joe's (both part of the Stan Clark "Joe's" empire), and Chipotle Burrito. Other places that you would have to drive: Our Mexican food selection isn't stellar. Four of our Mex places are owned by the same families, and are all the standard Guadalajara style stuff. They're ok and the service is always speedy. El Tapatio (north), El Tapatio (south), El Vaquero (west), and Palomino's (NE). None are very close to the stadium, which is a plus, if you actually want to get into eat. Of those, Palomino's is newest/nicest, and usually the easiest to get in to. It's just a couple of miles from the stadium. Also Mexico Joe's, listed above. Thai Cafe - One of my favorite places in town. Tokyo Pot - Real gem of a place. Japanese Shabu Shabu. They slice beef insanely thin. Then you cook it in two different broths. Fun place to go and the food is really tasty. Bad Brad's BBQ - Good bbq place, but it's fairly far east of town. Of course, if the weather turns out to be nice, the tailgate scene will be fantastic. I just can't believe how tailgating has grown over the last few years for game day. Feel free to ask questions!
  6. And likewise, Nebraska is the first real defense OSU will face. Weeden has thrown a lot of INTs (8) this year. He's got a great arm, and the 4 new OL starters have done a pretty good job protecting him. But when he's rushed, bad things can happen. I hope that Hunter will see some early success, as that will make Weeden's job a helluva lot easier. I'm worried that Martinez will get back on track against us. I didn't get to see all of the NU/UT game, as it was the same time as our game against Tech. We did flip back and forth, and saw some nasty open drops by your receivers. I don't think they'll have another bad game like that. My prediction is...I have no idea what to expect. Big 8 me says, "Oh crap, Nebraska is coming to town". 2010 me says, "Hey, a loss is not certain, we can play with these guys...exude cautious optimism." Game day, as of now, is showing 40% chance of thunderstorms, with a high in the mid-70s. Speaking of that, what happened to that Mizzou poster here, "Tuff as rain"?
  7. See, the problem is that Nebraska hasn't lost that much over the years. I've gotta go with what I know. Barry Sanders - 1988 NU vs OSU 189 yards, 4 TDs But...in the spirit of this thread, my nod goes to Suh. I kept thinking, how can one guy be so disruptive the entire game. Just amazing. Was it the '94 Orange bowl listed above where Frazier had that crazy 80ish yard TD run?
  8. I'm glad to hear that some of you will be coming down to the game. I am amazed at how big the tailgate scene has gotten in the last 10 years. When I was in school (started with Thurman, then Barry, then...0-10-1), people just didn't tailgate. Now people really get after it for a fun experience. It will be our homecoming. If you can get there Friday night, do the walk around. All the greek houses and several of the dormitories make ginormous house decorations and there are regularly crowds over 20-30k walking around for it. The bars on the strip will be hopping. Next week, I'll post a list of restaurants and a few other things to see when you're in town. The only record that means anything to me is 5-36-1. You guys own us, but then again, so do several other teams. It is hard work being a Cowboy fan! And TexArcher...I don't want to pee in our gracious guests' pool now, do I?
  9. Good afternoon, Huskers. What a difference 3 years make. The last time I stopped by here, Callahan was the throes of job death. I'm glad to see y'all getting back to the 'husker form we've come to expect over the years. I hope you beat the crap out of UT. And that OSU beats TTU, which we haven't done in Lubbock since 19-freakin'-44. It would be nice for the OSU/NU game to actually mean something for once. Enjoy the game and see you after the weekend. Andy
  10. http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=802409 This would be one heckuva team, eh?
  11. Wow! That was one helluva effort by the Huskers. I wish you could've pulled it off! Are any of you going to the Big 12 tournament? This will be my fifth trip...can't wait. Good luck with CU.
  12. Well, not much of what I thought would happen actually happened. Our two freshmen who guarded Maric only had 3 combined fouls, while Maric was limited to play time (what, 9-10 minutes the first half?) because of fouls on him. I did not expect that at all. I was surprised Doc yanked him so early(2 fouls...could be bad, but still). He's huge, has soft hands, and is unmovable down low. I think he shot about 80% from the floor; get the man the ball. Was it Dagunduro who had that awesome put back dunk? Whoever it was could fly. It really hurt you guys not having Miller back. Those turnovers were killer, as we found out for the first 2/3 of our season. Papersun, I actually live in Stillwater... Are you guys pretty happy with what Doc is doing in Lincoln? More than anything, it looks like you just need a couple more athletes on your team and you'll be right in the think of things. Good luck against UT on Tuesday. Soften 'em up a bit for us, please, as we have to finish out our season against them on Saturday.
  13. Good afternoon, y'all. How the heck is everyone? I haven't been by here since a bit after Pelini was hired. I'm glad to see everything settling down with NU football. First off, that was an excellent win against OU. You guys really pummeled them. I'm excited about our game tomorrow. Neither of us have had good seasons...but it's nice that we're both on some winning streaks. It's frustrating to think what might have been, had our teams played this way the entire season, eh? Random rambling thoughts about the game... Maric will abuse us inside. Our 'best' post presence comes from two true freshman (say that 5 times fast). Ibrahima Thomas is 6'11" and skinny. He's athletic, gets a few nice boards per game, fewer points, and is enthusiastic on defense...and is almost always in foul trouble. He does have a nice, mid-range shot. Martavius Adams is 6'8" and solid. It's been fun watching him develop this year. We don't run many (any?) plays for him, but he usually gets 2-3 trash buckets a game. Both of them will rotate on Maric and when they get into foul trouble (and they WILL get into foul trouble), Marshall Moses (6'8") and possibly Marcus Dove will be on him some. When we beat KU last weekend, we actually played a lot of zone (GASP!). Eddie never, ever did zone. Hey, it worked. I can see us using it quite a bit trying to slow Maric down. I hope that our PG, Byron Eaton, will abuse Stowbridge (is Miller still out?). From what I've seen, Stowbridge is a solid defender. Eaton is THE key for our team. When he plays well, the whole team does well. If Stowbridge has a good defensive game against Eaton, we could be in for a long day. I'm guessing that Dove will spend most of his time guarding Anderson, or possibly Dagunduro. Dove is noted for his defense. In the past, he's been an offensive liability, but has done a little better this year. He had a huge three with about a minute left in our KU game and was 3-3 3PT against MU. Those games aside, we generally don't expect much production from him. Our leading scorer is James Anderson, who is a true freshman. He's 6'6" and pretty athletic ( ). He settles for threes way too often. Then again, our whole team can have fall in love with the three. Not coincidentally, our 3PT attempts have been at the lowest point of the season on this 4 game win streak. The other guard/forwards you'll see are Obi Muenelo and Terrel Harris. Both are capable of lighting it up, but have been very inconsistent. Harris is a foul machine this season (he had 15 points in 17 minutes before fouling out in our last game). Obi is at his best getting to the basket, but forgets that at times and launches away. Coming off the bench for us are Tyler Hatch (All Big 12 Hair Team) and Nick Sidorakis. Tyler is a senior who started here as a walkon, but has since earned a scholly. Is usually good for a few minutes of defense and a couple boards. Sidorakis gets limited minutes at both guard spots. I'll be joining a group of friends at Eskimo Joe's before the game. What is it with OSU/NU games starting at unnaturally early hours? First we had the football game start before noon in Lincoln, now this one is at 12:45pm. Bah! Anyway, if any of y'all are coming down for the game, zip me a note and we can have some morning beerskis at Joe's.
  14. We're still not sure about Gundy. I wasn't feeling greedy before the season started - I was just hoping for a one game improvement over last year's 6-6 (7-6 with the bowl win). Now here we are with the same record. Our defense sucks and our offense, while putting up lots of yards, just couldn't seal the deal in the 2nd half of several games. 21 point 4th quarter lead to UT...pfft, gone. Just get some more first downs or just make that 32 yard field goal and we're there. But, that is our MO with UT lately. And speaking of Gundy, checkout the main ESPN football page. There's a link that says, "He's a man! He's got a contract extension!" Heh. I'm afraid he'll never live that down. I was pleased to see that your players bucked up and didn't go down without a fight against TAMU and CU, and beat the crap out of KSU. It's good to know that you'll have some players with fight in them coming back next year. Ganz has one more year, right? After watching him play so well, I wondered why he didn't get into some games earlier in the season. One other note, but are my eyes playing a trick on me or does Mizzou have a chance to play for the MNC? Wow! I guess they really are ""tuff as rain"". :-) Honestly, I hope they do it. I get tired of hearing how crap the Big 12 was this year. Have a good weekend, all y'all (can I say that here?)!
  15. How the heck is everyone? I'm glad that you're finally moving on from the Pederson/Callahan chapter. You've got The Man on the recruiting trail and are narrowing down the coaching list. It'll be fun seeing NU work their way back to football prominence. Enjoy the ride!
  16. What has McBride been doing since Osborne retired?
  17. Have you considered Mike Ditka for the interim AD and interim HC positions? Being the force of nature that he is, I believe he could also be the entire team as well. Who would win a game of Ditka vs the Aggies? Ditka 127 - Texas A&M 3
  18. Thanks for the explanation of the shoe thing. He really did boom the kicks. I wish we had a guy like Kunalic. I don't think Nebraska started behind the 30 all day; our guy (Fodge - punter who handles kickoffs) just can't kick 'em that far. The specialty in Stillwater? We don't have anything Runza like. The bar people think of in Stillwater is Eskimo Joe's. Its main claims to fame are cheesy t-shirts and the proximity to the stadium. And cheese fries. Hideaway Pizza has been around since '59. Great pizza. Next time Nebraska comes to Stillwater, zip me a note if you're making the trip. We have some great tailgates and will make sure you have a big time.
  19. We had a great time in Lincoln this weekend. I've always heard how great the gameday experience was there and we weren't let down. Everywhere we went people were welcoming us to Lincoln, chatted with us about the game both before and after, wished us safe travels, and somehow did it all in good humor considering how the day went. Thanks for all of the suggestions posted here. We went to Lazlo's for some good eats/drinks (mmm, Lunasea ESB) and then to PO Pears Friday evening (there was an informal OSU gathering there). I got to try a Runza at the game - good stuff. $5 for that and a bottle of water? Freakin' great deal! I was a little surprised at the lack of tailgating. For afternoon/evening games, are there usually more folks grilling and hanging out pre-game? I'm sure the chance of rain and early start time took away a few people. Speaking of weather, it was excellent for the game. Cloudy, calm, and nice temps. In the second half after your first score, I saw a few people throughout the stadium holding up their shoes during the kickoff. What's up with that? I hope Pederson's firing is the start to getting Nebraska football back on track. You're down now, but NU is too damn strong to stay down. Good luck!
  20. Thanks for being good hosts here. I've enjoyed lurking around and posting with you guys. It'll be interesting to see which teams decide to show up Saturday. If it plays out like most of our games against the Huskers go, well, it'll probably look like I picked the wrong week to quit drinking. See you at the game. Ride 'em, Cowboys!
  21. We're going through that very thing right now. Many people questioned the hiring of Mike Gundy as our coach. His only experience was as an OC here, and as a position coach at (gasp) Baylor and Maryland. When he was announced, he said that this was his "NY Yankee" job. I believe him when he says it. If he's successful, he'll be here for a long time. But...if we have another two mediocre years, especially with the money poured into the program lately, it could get rough. Heck, there are already lots of grumblings after just 2.5 years on the job. Gill flips to Rozier, TD! Gill throws to Fryar, TD! He ran one helluva offense back in the day... What type of offense is he running at Buffalo now?
  22. What has Turner Gill been up to lately? Didn't he used to coach QBs at UNL?
