  1. I see that the NU-Texas game will be carried regionally by ABC-TV Saturday. Since it's a regional game, hopefully we will be spared having to listen to perennial Husker Hater Bent Pusberger spew his vitrolic garbage over the airways. In 30 years Pusberger has never even tried to hide his partiality for one team over the other but in recent years its gotten so bad that even ABC appears to be getting ready to pull the plug on this aging gas bag. For someone who has never coached or played the game he certainly seems to offer a lot of opinions on every single naunce of the game. While recently watching a USC contest I decided that his grandchildren must be in the will of the USC Coach since he mentioned his name at least 100 times. He called the opposition team's quarterback by the USC quarterback's name at least five times and when the other team had the ball he was still talking about the glories of the previous series of downs by USC. Strangely when USC was penalized 11 times during the game, including 4 personal fouls, Pusberger was relating his own personal experiences with the USC coach as being an outstanding leader of men on and off the field. Pusberger sounds like he is broadcasting for a hometown high school team where his entire audience consists of fans for that school. He apparently forgets that there is a huge audience out there rooting for the other team on the field too. Yes Husker fan, be glad this isn't a nationally broadcast game. We're going to get creamed, but at least we don't have to suffer the indignity of getting our faces rubbed in it. For those of you who are curious as to why Pusberger hates Nebraska so much and why he saves up so much of his anger for when he does our games, you might check the old files of the Omaha World Herald for Sept 20 1986 (the 21st actually). We defeated Pusberger's alma mater Florida State that night 34-17. I'm not sure if it was the loss or the fact that he was arrested at an Omaha motel in the company of "someone." I'm sure you can find someone who can check the "morgue" files for you.
  2. Not meaning to pick on you specifically, but you know this how ??? You're making some pretty specific statements here. Have you ever coached a major college team ? What are you qualifications to make statements like this. Do you personal know Turner Gill ? I happen to know him and find your remarks completely baseless. As I said, I mean nothing against you personally, but in reading this board, I find that in general, the postings come from individuals who have absolutely no experience whatsoever in either playing, coaching, or seemingly anything more than planting their asses on a couch and watching the game. I've never played beyond the high school level and certainly do not feel qualified to judge any coach's ability as to what they do, should have done, or even have the ability to do. I am however a military man. I have led men into battle and have been responsible for their lives. I take pride in my ability to do that. I've gone to a few games since my return from Iraq and see students doing the same things I did when I was at the U. Swilling beer, acting like damn fools, cheering the team, painting up and screaming obscenities. Acting like they are contributing to the success of the team, while in reality, they are adding nothing. They scream, "We're Number One," THEY are nothing. The team is everthing. Most of them aren't even fans. They don't attend the rally the night before. The game is just an excuse to drink, maybe get laid afterwards. Sorry I've gotton on a soapbox here :-) Didn't mean to vent on you. :-) Just letting off a little frustration at some of the posting from people who obviously really don't know what the hell they are even writing about :-)
  3. No Solich definitely deserved his shot then. It wasn't just the Good Old Boys Network. He'd paid his dues and was definitely the best choice and he proved it. He inherited a great program and didn't change it much and sure as the hell wasn't fired because of being a lousy coach. He was 9-3 the year he got canned. Check out a post a few week back by a poster by the name of OldTimer for the real story on that firing. He apparently knows the real reason for the firing which was only rumor at the time. Appears ole Stevie had a secret that Frank Solich knew about and was fired because of it. Anyway we agree that Gill definitely deserves a chance for an interview along with Bo and the rest.
  4. If that was the uniform you wore during your playing years Guru, no wonder they kept you on the bench most of the time :-) Just kidding bro.
  5. QUOTE(seedguy @ Oct 22 2007, 09:14 PM) Why not Turner Gill? What has he done to be automatically disqualified by so many on these boards? The man should definitely be interviewed. Not because he happened to play here but for the reasons below. First, look at what he has done at Buffalo. He inherited facilities and talent on what has been argued by ,many to be the worst program in D1 and immediately had those guys overachieving. He has those guys believing in themselves, the program and definitely in the coaching staff. Compare that to Callahan who takes five star recruits and gets them to underachieve. So on this first test, Turner is much more like Osborne and Devaney than Callahan and I suspect better than what a lot of other coaches could do at Buffalo. As such he has more head coaching experience than Bo. And yes, I think Bo should be interviewed too. My point is that saying Gill doesn't have enough experience is not valid. If it is, then Bo should not be interviewed either. Next Gill does have a lot of years in coaching. The man is 45 years old. Some have said maybe in a few years after he has more years of experience. Well how much more does he need and if you wait too long he'll only have a few years before retirement to give. He was a good position coach while he was here and coaching Crouch, Frost, and Tommie too (I think) certainly can't damage his credibility can it? He has Texas connections for recruiting. That must count for something. He was given administrative duties while here as well I believe as assistant head coach with Frank. Or some title like that anyway. Finally, if he does pass the muster in all the other areas that Tom Osborne would require, then his experience as a former coach and player at one of college footballs most prestigious instituations SHOULD be considered. He is charismatic to his players and given his Nebraska player bloodlines, the state could rally around him like few others if he passes the interview requirements. It would be foolish to write this talent off just because he played at NU. Yes we don't want to pull another John Blake like Oklahoma did. But Turner Gill is 45 with a lot more experience and more of a track record than Blake had at age 34 when he was hired. All I am saying is give Gill a chance too. I have followed him closely since he started at Buffalo. Given what he has had to work with there, he has been very impressive in every aspect of the Head Coaching job. He has inspired the players, his coaching staff and the Buffalo community by demonstrating charisma and also character that reminds me of the man I bet he learned some of it from: Tom Osborne. Some of you are very adamant about not wanting Gill. If it is fear of commiting another Blake. That is valid but it doesn't automatically disqualify Gill from consideration. Further, just because Blake didn't work out at Oklahoma doesn't mean that a former coach/player here will never work. If that is the case Bob Devaney should have never hired Tom Osborne. And Tom should have been a complete failure as Blake was at Oklahoma. If Gill wants an interview, he definitely deserve a real and serious interview. And I would not be surprised that under a full and comprehensive review, Gill may be the best man for the job. In my opinion it is between Gill and Pelini. If it is a tie, Gill gets my tiebreaker vote (if I had one) due to character, experience and yes, a history and understanding of Nebraska football tradition. [END OF QUOTE from SeedGuy] I agree whole heartedly SeedGuy. I think Gill certainly deserves a look. He is a class guy who gave a lot to NU both as an athlete and as an assistant coach. I'm not sure he'd want to return to Lincoln. He was treated badly here when he dared marring out of his race and I'm not sure he wants to put his family through that again. Despite how we like to think of ourselves as one big happy family, Lincoln is and has always been a racially divided community. I'd almost forgotten just how bad it was until I recently returned from Iraq and witnessed it for myself once again. We need to take a good look at ourselves people. Sorry for jumping on that subject, but let's hope that Gill gets a fair look. As a coach I think he would make an outstanding candidate. He certainly knows our traditions and what it means to be play for our great University. He was always outstanding as a recruiter, something we've lost sight of in recent years, and hopefully can bring some honor and dignity back to us once again. We know it's not going to happen over night, no matter who takes over. GO BIG RED

  7. Just did a quick check and absolutely not possible that IF Solich did have an affair (which is questionable at best) it could not have been with Pederson's daughter who would have been a Freshman at the time. She may not even have been at the U, but more than likely at Wesleyan. I'd heard those rumors about an affair/and a preg as well, but never heard anything substaniating them. Much like the rumors of Solich being arrested for a DUI while at Ohio. Those became completely unfounded when hair samples showed he'd been drugged hours before his arrest. Those have become a matter of record and the case was dismissed. I looked it up and so can you. As to other involving Pederson.....Still waiting for someone who KNOWS to put a capper on this one. GREAT to hear that TO is going to step in as AD. This is one honorable guy. Heard before leaving Iraq that the Republicans had all but promised him Ben Nelson's seat if he wanted it, but he turned them down out to loyalty to Nelson in the evbent Nelson chose to run again. Sorry as hell that Chuck Hagel is giving up his seat. The GI's best friend from Nebraska without a doubt.
  8. Or Warren Sapp when we played Miami.......but that really wasn't Oxygen he was sucking was it :-)
  9. Thanks for your reponse X... What I'm trying to find out is exactly why Pederson FIRED Solich. My source tells me it went far beyond Solich's performance as head coach, but rather to protect a deep dark secret that Solich possessed, perhaps the darkest secret a family man can have. Maybe this would shed some light on the personality of a man who would do most anything to protect his reputation, up to and including destroying a great football program.
  10. Hey fellow Huskers, Well I certainly picked a great time to return to the land of the living. Just returned from my second tour in Iraq and what a wonderful surprise gift, the firing of the surge of Husker land, Steve Pederson. Apparently it just happened in the last day or so. Heard the news when I landed in NYC yesterday. Hooray. Obviously I've been out of touch for a long time and need a lot of catching up. Like the rest of you I've been mourning the season this year but have never given up hope for a turn around and maybe this is just the start. First some background. Graduated in January 2003 In Lincoln, just about the time old Steverino was named as AD. Never liked the guy from the start. Kind of smarmy if you know what I mean. Acted like he owned the place from the first day. Something a little "odd" about him, but couldn't quite put my finger on it, but then again we didn't travel in the same circles :-) Shipped out to Texas for a short tour, then off to Germany for a few years. Kept track of the Huskers during that time and watched Frankie rebuilding. Always thought he was a class act. Friendly and I knew a bunch of the players back in the day. Tough act following Coach TO. Then came the 2003 season and the firing of Solich. Didn't know what the hell to think. A coach goes 9-3 and gets fired ? What the hell is that. ? Heard there was some bad blood between Frankie and Stevie, but there are always those rumors. Off to Iraq and no time to think about much else but keeping my head down and my powder dry. Near the end of 2004 I meet a fellow Cornhusker from Beatrice who was a year or so behind me. He seems to know the REAL story behind the firing. Now before I go shooting my mouth off, I want to know what everyone else knows for REAL...Not vague rumors, but the real story. I've been out of the loop for a long long time, so maybe everyone else knows what really happened except me. I THINK I know the story about Solich too since that was not exactly a secret, but here again I'm not sure even about that. So fill me in guys. Bring me up to date. I'd really appreciate it. As to the source of MY information. Let's say I'd put my life on the line for what this guy told me. He put his career on the line in even disclosing how he knew. "Don't Ask..Don't Tell" That should make that clear. IraqVet KEEP SUPPORTING OUR BOYS (Regardless of how you might feel about the clown in the Oval Office)
