  1. As if I am not disappointed enough in Ohio State that they can't play in the Conference Championship Game. They go out and honor Tressel the week before the championship game in which they aren't allowed to play in because of TRESSEL!! http://www.timesleaderonline.com/page/content.detail/id/542937/Ohio-State-honors-2002-national-championship-team.html?nav=5012 Am I the only one that thinks this is in poor taste?
  2. I hate shirts like this. I would never wear it because even though it's a Husker shirt you are still giving Iowa props! I see people wearing I hate Nebraska shirts and I love it because I feel that we are in there head that much or they are jealous! Never wear a logo or the name of another team on your gear!! NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS says it all!!!!
  3. I agree college athletics opens the door for some people I don't believe it's the majority. I believe most of the athletes would get into college somewhere some may be more inclined to choose a school that would be better academically. I would argue that athletes that get into a better college because of athletics need the money more than others. There are a lot of athletes that use football to gt out of poor neighborhoods and while that is great they still have to leave their families behind. Mothers and fathers can't travel to Nebraska to watch their kid play because they can't afford it. Younger brothers and sisters arent getting the education and attention needed because they live in a poor school district where funds keep getting cut. Friends are still struggling after highschool trying to find a job and stay out of gangs. Plus many athletes don't have money coming in from their family because there just isn't any. How many guys out there are like Carl Crawford who didn't go to college because it was more important to give his family a better life? Can you blame Reggie Bush's parents for seeing a better life outside the ghetto, and not wait for years for that opportunity when essential Reggie brought millions to USC? I would be willing to bet there are more athletes that leave college without a degree because of their families financial situation than athletes that graduate from a school they normally wouldn't get into because of athletics.
  4. It has to with how much a college athlete gets paid while in school and how people value an education. When talking about a student athlete you can't value the "education" any more than what a normal student would have paid for that education because sports didn't open the door to a college education that door is already open. Sports just made the education By adding all the benefits of a college education (money earned, experiences or whatever) to the value of an athletic scholarship are saying that an education wouldn't have been available for this person had they not played sports. Which fortunately isn't the case. Many football players would have been accepted to UNL or any other college without football and they still would have received all the benefits of a college education. When an athlete goes to UNL on scholarship that lets say pays full tuition at $20,000 for 4 years the value of that scholarship is $20,000 Not $20,000 plus this infinite number that includes their success and experiences because a college education is still attainable by anyone. They would just have to lay the $20,000 I am not trying to quantify the value of having a college degree. I am saying that a degree is still attainable by all athletes it just isnt for free. So the value of a college degree can not be used in the value of an athletic scholarship If I give you a $100 and you turn it into a $1000 through the market or Vegas can I tell people I gave you a $1000???
  5. With the money you can't include the money made after graduation as part of the deal. They could still attend UNL even if they didn't play football they would just have to pay the $20,000. So any money made after graduation isn't A benefit of playing football since they could attend college anyway I just don't think it's fair to say that athletes couldn't attend college if they weren't athletes
  6. Saying that people with college education will make 1 million more than someone without a college education doesn't increase the value of education they received. First considering there is a greater number of upper class with an education than with lower class with an educaton and a significant amount more lower class people than upper class and are they counting people with disabilities in those numbers? Doesn't like 5% of the population own 90% of the wealth??? There are other factors such as connections and resources that open more doors for the upper class. Also a $20,000 dollar education from UNL is worth $20,000 It's worth is not how much more they make based off an education. All these players can still get an education they would just have to pay the $20,000. College athletics bring in millions and some individual athletes can bring in 7 figure amounts. Is $20,000 plus food fair for bringing in a million? The food is a bonus and coat a lot but the training table provides food for all athletes and students are allowed to eat there at a discount. When I was there I could eat at the training table for $5. And yes they do get to travel but they work while they are there. I don't think this fall the players will be able to go fishing and enjoy the night life of Madison while they are there to play Wisconsin. I don't count business trips as a vacation and I would bet players don't count away games as a time to go site seeing and vacations Also they didn't sign up for the scrutiny they receive in the media and by the fan base. They signed up to play football and get an education. Even if they were allowed to have a part time job when would they work?? In the fall the players have to carry a full load of classes practice for 3 hours a day and on the weekends travel to away games and have meetings on Sunday. I don't even think there is a day off for a college athlete?? How many people after all that can add a 20 hour work week and still perform to university and fan expectations?????? I have no problem with people making money but when the people up top set wages and prices the guy on the bottom always gets the shaft!! Tommie Frazier and all the players on those national title teams brought UNL millions! A $20,000 education that doesn't guarantee a job, free lunches and a couple trips to manhattan Kansas is in the ball park of adequate compensation
  7. I love how people think a free education is worth a couple hundered thousand dollars up front! How much money do you think a person like Tebow Frazier Or even Reggie Bush brought in to there school?? A college degree doesn't get you jack in this country!! Except maybe a trip to the unemployment office!!! If your lucky enough to get a job chances are you will be laid off to cover your fat and happy bosses quarterly bonus!!!!! A college degree is over rated!!! "but you get free trips!". Wow great so they get to go to a hotel room and study film for three days! If they are lucky enough to go to a bowl game you are still there for football that is what everyone expects. Don't act like it's a vacation!!! Bottom line college football is a billion dollar industry and the pigs up top want to keep there money!! If it was really about education the NCAA and Universities would put more focus on being a student and not an athlete! Plus what about the stress they are put under by the media and fans!! Being scrutinized the whole week for what happened on Saturday!!!
  8. For what it's worth I met Carl Pelini on a recruiting trip out here in SoCal! (friends from Nebraska work at the hotel he was staying at). They asked Carl if he would like to go to dinner with some Nebraskans and he took them up on the offer. Luckily I was able to make it. Anyway we started talking and without asking about it Carl started talking about how he doesn't think Bo will ever leave Nebraska unless he is forced out. Apparently he is tired of moving his family around and he really loves Lincoln! He also stated that Bo's wife and kids loved Lincoln while they were here! While at LSU the wife and kids would take trips to Lincoln to see friends they had made while they were living there! He also said his family absolutely hated living in Baton Rouge and if he went back to LSU he would have to go without his wife and kids. Take it for what it's worth but it doesn't sound like Bo has a desire to leave not even to go to Colombus!!
  9. I see how it can be a negative but I think having a player 100% ready to see the field is better than sending a guy out to play when he isn't ready just so he can have on the field experience. These redshirts will see the field with confidence that has been gained from practice.
  10. Reading the article on Husker Extra they say that Nebraska had 50 redshirts this year. The most in the country! Anyone know about how many teams usually redshirt! Having that large number of redshirt freshman next year has to be a huge advantage for the team next year. See article HERE
  11. Here is the link http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3735102
  12. I wasn't at the game so I didn't see the empty seats! I had to pay per view it in So Cal and believe me it was hard to watch the game because it was sunny and 80 out here and I really wanted to go to the beach. But when I went to the University I never sat in my seat and we would all just pile down closer to the turf and leave our bad seats open. In fact I think there has been only two games in my career as a husker fan that I have sat in my assigned seat. I always found a better one than I paid for. I am just saying just because the seats were empty doesn't mean that they weren't at the game.
  13. Giving up 42 points means nothing in week 1. Some teams come out looking great in week and some teams get it going as the season progresses. By week five who knows how that defense will be.
  14. Well, I'm in Laguna Niguel, so not far at all...not sure if I can make it, but thanks for the info! I've never been to a 'Nebraska watch site' around here, what is the atmosphere like? I guess my main question is, I don't drink, so will I feel out of place? Probably a stupid question, but well... mm0 This is the first time The OC Tavern is going to have the husker games on this year. So I don't know what it is going to be like. I know that Fat Faced Finners in Hermosa Beach usually has a lot of people and I hear that over 50 people have RSVP for the first game. I have never been to this husker bar in Anaheim and I can't remember the name of it but I know that place has a lot of people every game. Check with Californian's for Nebraska for all the watch sites. As for you not drinking no it isn't that big of deal no one really cares. I am with two guys that don't drink and I will only have a beer or two the whole game. The OC Tavern is supposed to show all the games so maybe we will see you later in the season.
  15. If anyone lives in or around the San Clemente area and needs a place to watch the game. The OC Tavern will be showing the game. If you would like send me a personal message and I can send you the evite or you can just meet up there. A good friend of mine is having (UNL Almum) a BBQ day. We will be surfing in the morning then watching football at his house that afternoon before heading to the OC Tavern to watch the Huskers.
