  1. Did anyone see the Oregon/Arizona game last night? Let me get to my point here about the Huskers with this. Oregon beat AZ in every statistical catagory and some by a large margin. There was one little stat that they did not do so well in....TURNOVERS. Oregon had 3 INTERCEPTIONS and 1 FUMBLE. This was a very mediocre AZ team that should have never beaten Oregon. It only reinforces the fact that turnovers will decide a game quicker than anything else out there. It is unfortunate the Huskers, along with a struggling defense, has turned the ball over in droves this year. We rank near the bottom of DIV I schools in turnover margin. I don't think it takes anyone smart to figure out that has ripped us hard this year and given away TONS of points as well. Can you put this blame on coaching staff? I'm, sure one of the first things any running back coach teaches their players is protecting the ball. You can't say that they didn't try to do things about it. You all saw the times Castille fumbled the ball.....he was yanked right away. Obvious reasons why we did not see him as much as people would have liked. I, for one, wish he was in there more....but he definitely had fumble issues.
  2. Just read the article about the Pope John High School football team winning the class D-1 state title tonight at Memorial Stadium. This was the last quote in the article from their coach P.J. Book “Defense has been the heart and soul of the Crusaders’ program for 13 years. What wins games is defense and not turning the ball over,” said Book. “They know that and take pride in defense. They knock the heck out of each other in practice all week, so playing in the games is just a continuation of that.” Seems like this guy and team understands the importance of a good defense :-)
  3. Recruiting is always an interesting topic to consider. We have all seen 5 star players come to college teams and flop. We have seen 2 star players come and explode into great players. I think the big factor is the situation they are in. Obviously these people have athletic ability...otherwise they would not be getting scholarship offers from DIV I schools. Its how the are developed and how they personally choose push themselves. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. I think we can all look though at past Nebraska teams and see many walk on players who made the most of their time and became amazing athletes. With all due respect to Nebraska High School football, we are not exactly a breeding ground for 5 star recruits. However, we have had some amazing college football players who put in the time and came out on top.
  4. I sometimes wonder just like many people what it takes for fans to be satisfied when it comes to a football team. A lot of people on here talk about "style points" and being competative. What if we go 10-2 in the regular season but get get blown out two times in an embarassing fasion....are people still pissed? Someone posted numbers about KU's football schedule this year and as we can all see....they have not played a very strong schedule at all....and some very very poor defenses. However they are 10-0 right now. Most people have not taken the time to look at the numbers....they just see an undefeated team. Sure there is plenty to talk about with this but I wonder if fans get more hostile and negative when there are coaching woes and a general digust for how things are being run.
  5. Enjoyed reading the article. I don't quite agree that it was a stretch to find the list of 10 that the author mentioned. He did expand and talk about many things, the entire package. You are right that unfrotunately those things will be overshadowed for the most part. I would be curious for feedback from others on how you weigh out the entire scope of being a headcoach. Obviously wins and losses is right there at the top. At the end of the day results have to happen. But there were many good things in that article that I think any Nebraska fan would want from a head coach ie. someone who graduates players, this is a college institution and they are getting degrees because 90% or more will never go on to play professional sports, keeping players out of trouble. etc. I think everyone can agree those are important things and do reflect on a program....just hard to see those sometimes when the win loss record looks pretty bleak.
  6. I think that was a great article from the LJS. You can't make any mistake that Callahan has the respect of players and that he is a hard worker. I think you would have to be stupid to say these are all lies from the players and such. Callahan is a very smart, well thought out individual who is intelligent about the game and puts a lot of time and thought into what he does. I do agree that managing the entire scope just might not be his thing. Looking at his tenure here and at Oakland it seems he has just not had the success managing the whole operation. Hopefully he will be able to find a great fit after Nebraska.
  7. I am not asking to be taken to task about Columbine comments. Sorry if I did not clarify it well, I mearly said that because these two guys took comments about them and their appearance and stuff and it ate them up inside before they snapped. It ripped them apart so much. I am mearly saying that comments like that, some people can just shrug them off like no big deal but it can really effect other people. Sure life is all about being critical and improving. I just think that we are the point with the subject of NU Football and Coaches that everything has been said, it is plaid stupid to sit and gawk over and over and shread people to death time and time again. Take a break for a while.
  8. Thank you for someone finally having some decency around here. Constant harsh words, criticism, and rude comments can be just as bad as a threat over the phone. Cosgrove knows the defense has been bad. Period. He knows it more than anyone because he has lived with it and seen every aspect of it on paper and film and with his own eyes. Maybe take some time to fully read some articles with quotes from him. Yes he truly knows it sucks. So how long do you keep hammering someone in the ground? Keep pushing their buttons and ripping them apart day after day after day. I don't want to turn this into another big thread where we have to crunch the numbers again and go over the records that have been broken. We all know those already, it's pretty clear and obvious. Just saying that all of the sudden the man gets a death threat on his phone and now people get sensitive a little bit and want to play the nice guy and "how would anyone ever do that to someone" Why don't we consider taking a break from the attacks period. We have all heard the same thing over and over for weeks and weeks now. Does anyone remember the Columbine High School shooting in Colorado back in 1999? They have journal entries and written statements from the killers that specifically said "we never would have had to do this if people just would have been nicer to us" Those guys finally snapped and shot up a school because they were different than others, dressed differently, etc and people didn't accept them. Give someone the decency they deserve as a human. You have heard it from the players and the coaches that they respect and admire each other as men and good people. Sure it sucks when your job goes downhill....when things don't go the way you wished, when you fail at something, but that doesn't change who they are. Jobs will come and go and fade away into the past but they will still remain as great people who took on a challenge most of us would never take or qualify with for that matter. I think people think that everything is alright until someone makes a death threat or something that society views as being immoral. But pushing the line until that happens is fine. I'm not here to start a political post or anything, but just consider it at least. Most of us know the coaching staff will be gone. That seems pretty for sure. So lets just take a break from the ridicule for a while. It's getting a little old I think.
  9. Another fantastic rumor, at least this one was short and to the point and not a super long read haha.
  10. This is yet another bogus rumor and baseless information. No one ever made negative remarks like this in the 90's when Nebraska won 77-0 over Iowa State....or even putting up 62 on Florida. Seems like that sure is running up the score just as much. Is Mark Mangino trying to prove he is a jock and get job offers as well? Have some common sense. This is all because no one here likes Callahan so anything he does is going to come under fire.
  11. I totally understand people are concerned about hiring choices, etc. Keep in mind. Lots of people constantly reference Osborne on here. And why can't we run the ball like we did in the 90's and why the mood is different and what Osborne did....on and on and on. Osbourne coached here for 20 some years? There were some shady times in the beginning. Read earlier topics and his book and statements that he had people at his throat many years and many times ready for his firing and resignation. We too soon forget he coached here a long long time. I took all 20 whatever years to develop consistency and to get them where they were in the 90's. That is not a statement to keep any of the coaching staff or whatever. Just saying that sometimes there can be quick turnarounds, but that is usually not the norm.
  12. I again think we need to be reminded that there will not be a savior that will come in and all of the sudden things will be reversed 360 degrees overnight. This is not a garbage dump Div II team that can be transformed in a heartbeat. We all know that talent and progress is up across the board in all leagues. Just look at the AP polls and how many 2 loss teams are in the top 25. The playing field is leveling for everyone. I have stated this before and will stand strong on this, but teams who execute and don't make mistakes will win 99 percent of the time. Sounds like a dumb statement a first grader could make but it's true. Heck, look at OSU's (Buckeyes) loss to Illinois. Their quarterback threw 3 interceptions and no TDs. That is a formula right there for a loss....and guess what, they gave the game away just like that. I posted last night about how Charlie Weis is dumbfounded as to why his team is not executing, and retaining things they are being taught. Same coaches and system from the last few years that has been very successful and competative....just different players now. TO is gonna bring in a coach that has been talked about and thoughtfully considered. But folks at some point there has to be execution and retention by the players. A coach and sit and teach and motivate day after day but if players are out there missing assignments and not executing the plays and system, it will fail time and time again.
  13. I have not made tons of posts on here because I hate getting too involved in rumor discussion and beading a dead horse but would like you all to consider this: We all know the WCO is a complex system. Nothing more needs to be said about it I think. It takes repetitions and real life experience to make it fluid, and consistent, etc. Someone posted earlier about the progress Zac Taylor made. Some very obvious progress from year one to year two in offensive production. Just look at the numbers. It makes me sick to here people not really wanting to give Ganz the accolades he deserves. People are timid, and reserved and such. Numbers don't lie. I don't care who we played or what the circumstances. This man has thrown for 900 some yards and 11 TD's in two games. That is unreal. Also consider that one of those games was against the top defense in the Big 12 and one of the top defenses in the nation. I think people need to get off their horse and stop shading the fact that he knows his stuff and knows the system. The WCO works and Ganz has proven that because he understands it more than anyone on that team and knows the reads to make, knows the audibles, etc. How else do you explain the surge of offense the last two games....holy cow. Lets not make more excuses of "well the players decided to put some heart into it......or they were trying harder" I never have and never will question the heart and will of players on a high profile football team anywhere. They would never be on that field if they didn't give a crap about busting their rear. Say what you want, but we are only sitting here wasting our time trying to tell someone we know what's going through their heads and then they are trying and when they are not. Now as per my subject line, take a look at Notre Dame this year. Just read an article on espn.com today and Charlie Weis had several quotes as being lost and confused as to why his team was not learning and retaining coaching and teaching. He said "either it is a problem with the students or the teachers." He said there have been breakdowns across the board all the way up to upperclassmen and starters. He said he and his staff are honestly searching and have been as to why things have turned out the way they have for the Irish. Look at least year and the year before. Same coaching staff, great experience and great players, a quarterback who was a great athlete and knew the system well. Now a year later and they have won one game. The same coaches are there...coaching the same system, the same techniques, and probably working overtime and harder than they ever have before but look at the results. I am not here to defend or slam Cally and the staff at all. We all have made our opinions known many times. I know most people think Callahan is just a slick talker and BS's his way through things and won't answer questions. Since when is it our business to know everything that goes on behind closed doors? Since when is the public supposed to know every coversation that goes on in that team, in that stuff, in that locker room. There is privacy in every job out there and things that we will see but never understand...because it is not our business to know and not public information. Someone just posted on here a bit ago and I will paraphrase him but he said that since Callahan is under fire and such, anything he does is going to draw criticism and crap from everyone. How the guy dresses, how he walks, how he talks, how he eats his food, how he pees in the bathroom. Seriously, take a break from analyzing someone being a person and you know, most of that stuff probably is meaningless but is being blown up to some big ordeal because people need reasons to hate him more.
  14. This is all opinions of callers. No one has video of what Callahan looked like or was doing walking through a tunnel. I think this a totally lewd point to begin with. Don't think he might be a bit emotional finally getting a win?....finally getting some people to shut up even for a few minutes. I shake my head everytime I see people make bogus assumptions about things they read or hear. Give it a break for a while. I don't care if you think the players were just playing for themselves or whatever. They should have been doing that all year. Why don't we give some credit where credit is due.
  15. I don't care what K-State's record is or how good they are.......I hope people who have said this team has quit and given up....get a reality check right now.
  16. Folks....take a look at the NU versus KU games in 2001 and 2002 I believe. We beat Kansas those two years by more points than they did to us this past weekend. I think we need to stop the conversation about running up the score.
  17. I also want to agree with the initial post on here. The world is a cruel place. Especially when it comes to high performance based jobs such as coaching and others in the corporate and business world. I know that almost everyone of you out there has failed at a job, or task before. It is a shame Cosgrove and Callahan have not put the pieces together and this isn't the job here for them. But treat them with some respect still as a person. I can't imagine how all of you would feel if you couldn't even go out in public anymore because of getting blasted and humiliated. Your kids have to listen to the crap all day long at school. What a terrible way for someone to be treated just because they came up short in their efforts and failed at a job. We all fail every single day....the difference is that most of our lives are not in the public eye for everyone to see and comment on.
  18. People need to stop wasting away in their misery. I know we are a bad team....everyone knows we are a bad team. No need to pound out the reasons that have been said for weeks now. People forget about Oklahoma back in the 90's. They were a horrid program....absolutely terrible. They went through 3 head coaches in a short span before Stoops came in and had the right chemistry. It is incredibly unfortunate the disaster this season has been after looking promising last year. The people that are in charge are there for a reason. They are not retarded to the fact of what is going on. There are things going on, changes, talks, etc that we will never know about because it is non of our business until things are official. Sure it sucks in the meantime, but we are not the first and certainly not the least school that has been through this before.
  19. I think we all know about the defensive problems.....we have hashed it out for weeks and weeks and it would be dumb to beat a dead horse. I think you just have to look at who executes and who doesn't.....plus turnovers. Look at where USC suffered losses this year. Do people think USC is a horrible team now because they lost two games? I hope not....but in those two losses they had massive turnover problems. Doesn't matter who you play, you will lose games when you turn the ball over multiple times. We can attribute a few touchdowns today to a short field for KU. A hell of a lot easier putting points up when you start inside your opponent's own 30 yard line numerous times because of turnovers.
  20. We certainly left many chances on the field. Sean Hill had a sure fire TD in the second half and dropped the ball...several other dropped balls to wide open receivers.
  21. Sure, let the bashing begin for my subject line. I am not here to diminish anything that happened today or our horrible execution of defense. However, I think we need to give credit where credit is due. We put up more points on KU than anyone ever has this year. We racked up close to 500 yards against the nation's 5th ranked defense. Their scoring defense was averaging 10 points or so a game and we put up 39 on them. Ganz and Purify picked apart one of the nation's best cornerbacks multiple times today. We put up more than double the pass yard and total yard averages their defense was giving up. Again, I'm not here trying to pump things up or to give more praise than needed. Just saying we did some great things today against a great team amidst a horrible loss.
  22. I honestly can't see how anyone can sit and bash anything against Ganz at all. Sure e threw some picks...he fessed up to them as well. A tipped ball too is anyone's grab as well. It was a lucky tip and there happened to be someone in position. And yes, he forced two others where a player was open but he was not accurate. But to come in on the nation's 5th best defense and pick apart their secondary and throw continually to one of the nation's best cornerbacks and beat him multiple times? Man....I'm not sure what any of you out there are looking for.
  23. I remember going to an NU/ISU game in 1995 or 1996 I believe and the score was 77-0. Now do you call that not running up the score? That was the case of one of the best football teams ever against a horrible ISU team and defense. Same principle applies today. Also keep in mine how many short fields KU had today....many!
  24. They are not running up the score. They are just playing football against possibly the worst defense in NCAA. With a whole quarter left they are not gonna tell their second string to "not try". Just the facts of playing against a horrid defense......anyone will score tons of points.
  25. I think Danny Woodhead is a fine athlete. Remember that Chadron State is in a whole other league of competition. The size of teams and athletes in Div II or Div III is not even comparable sometimes to decent Div I teams. While Woodhead is a great running back and has done many great things, I am not sure if he would have had the same results at NU. One can only speculate but keep that in mind.
