I have Nebraska Pipeline dreams and would prefer a top tier O Line coach instead of one still growing into the role. He is only in his 2nd year ever of being the only O-Line coach and was brought in for obvious reasons. We were 3rd in average yards rushing against a weak side of the conference. Let’s hope I am wrong and we get Baker to flip to cover the growing pains of 3 stars

The fact that his dad is a legacy and his uncle is on staff is a lot closer to why DR has interest in our program than not.  This saga has been going on for months so yes the the fact that his uncle not only was retained but given a large raise is good for our recruiting efforts.

Now people may like or not like the coaching his uncle has done and that can be debated, etc. Bottomline is Rhule wants him on staff.  But to say this has nothing to do with DR and our recruiting efforts is quite rich.

Having Donovan on staff no doubt helps Dylan feel comfortable about going to Nebraska, but to keep throwing out the extension and insinuating, or flat out stating, that DR is the only reason Donovan is on staff is what is insulting. That was the go to line before this season and people continue to do that with the extension. Rhule wants Donovan on staff period, the fact that his presence helps in recruiting his nephew is just a bonus.

What does it matter if he can’t coach the talent up? And that is sad that this is the 2nd best class. 1 top 100 guy who hasn’t played 11 man football

I think Donovan has shown he is a pretty good O-Line coach from how the unit got much better over the year and became a solid unit.

I have no inside knowledge but I think we are big dollar for a QB.  This drew interest from McCord but also if McCord doesn’t come that same big payday goes to Raiola.  His uncle gets a hefty raise and basically the job and money is his and he doesn’t have to sit like he would at Georgia. Does anyone else think if McCord commits, Raiola backs off and if McCord doesn’t commit Raiola is in as the starter?  In either scenario Danny K remains as a redshirt freshman and Purdy is #2.

The bolded part has nothing to do with Dylan, the extension was done well before the DR possibility came back to the fore. Donovan was the only coach on the staff whose contract was up after this season since he only had 1 year left in his deal when he was retained. Rhule feels like Donovan is doing a good job, both in coaching and recruiting, and wanted to keep him, hence the extension and raise. Frankly I think many fans also realize now that Donovan is a pretty good coach and it is disrespectful to him to keep spouting this DR conspiracy nonsense.

There's not time-span on the 85 so I don't think that really tells you anything.  Over four years that's 2 per year, which I'm saying is low.  I would say twice that.  Maybe a bit more.

With the amount of change over for rosters these days, I think they look at it against the whole roster count and available slots against the 85. Bringing in 3-5 transfers per year with an overall count of transfers being at 10 or less seems reasonable considering most transfers are only 1-2 year players.

I don't fault Rhule for saying this.

I fault him a little for thinking this.

I understand the numbers are probably as low this year as any year.  But this is only two guys per year.  I really think Nebraska can/should be in the 4-5 range each year.  Maybe that will be adjusted in time.

10% of 85 is 8.5, so I don’t think he disagrees with you.

This is what makes this past season so frustrating.  There actually have been so many good things happening in the program, but one position (the most important) held everything else back.

I happen to agree with you.  And...everyone needs to remember that the playoffs expand to 12 teams.  So, that helps with the "contending for a playoff spot".

Completely agree with your frustration, it masks the overall improvement in the program this past year. The playoff expansion to 12 teams is why I think they could/should be in contention for a spot. I am not saying it they will get in, but they should be close. Looking at this year’s final rankings, teams 9-12 were all 10-2 and the next 3 were all 9-3 so getting up to 9+ wins in the B1G means your are in contention for a top 12 playoff spot. I don’t think it is unreasonable to get there, especially with Rhule’s track record and the overall program improvement in the program this year.

    You serious Clark?

    That seems extremely optimistic.

I feel like a winning record , and a real offensive line is about where I'm hoping for year 3

I would say in year 3 that the Huskers should be competing to win 9+ games a year. Get up to 10+ and you are in contention for the playoff. With a competent QB I feel like this year’s team would have been at 8-9 wins, so asking for them to get to 8+ next season and another jump of 1-2 wins the 3rd year shouldn’t be considered unreasonable. In fact that is exactly what Rhule has done at each of his 2 previous college HC jobs.

I think the O-Line got markedly better throughout this past season, to the point where everyone’s favorite whipping boy, Raiola, hasn’t even been mentioned as a needed coaching change. Not to mention the strong recruiting class of O-linemen he has coming in. The D-Line was very good and most of those key pieces are returning. Frankly I feel pretty good about the trenches on this team currently, which is a key building block for success. Add a QB and a couple more pieces to to the roster and this team should take another jump next year.

So legitimately 2021 was year 1 for him.  Covid was a lost year, and his year 2 was 10-3 and year 3 was 13-0.  Still a case of good coaches are on the up by year 2, and sure as hell don't take until year 4 or 5 to show progress!

While I understand the COVID season was odd, I don’t think you can just erase it completely. Norvell started building his culture, team processes and structure, installed his systems, hired out his coaching staff, conducted talent assessment and recruiting that had continuity into 2021, conducted team practices, etc. All of that matters, plus he also coached games that mattered regardless of how odd that season was. Those games allowed him to continue to develop his players, see what was working and what wasn’t, as well as identify what roster/coaching holes he needed to fill. IMO getting to 10 wins in 2022 doesn't happen if he is hired in 2021.

That being said, Norvell did show progress from 2020 to 2021 getting to 5 wins and increasing their conference win total to 4 from 2. It is completely fair to expect and improvement in record in year 2 under Rhule, but I expect year 3 and beyond to be when hopefully the Huskers are competing for playoff spots and double digit wins year-in and year-out.

Time flies. LOL. Thought it was his 3rd!  Thanks.  I'd love it if we turned it around next year.  Would honestly be excited to get to a bowl and look forward to the announcements to see where we are going.  Been a while...

Just thought about this as I was typing, we are (and have been) recruiting kids that have never seen NU in a bowl game...I remember being angry when we lost 7 or 8 bowls  in a row....And TO saying the hardest thing to convince Nebraskans is that 10-1 isn't a losing season.  One day.  GBR!

This is Norvell’s 4th season at FSU, he was hired before the 2020 season.

    2020 - 3-5

    2021 - 5-7

    2022 - 10-3

    2023 - 13-0

I might be drinking Koolaid, but has this season normalized Riley a bit?  His body of work is still pretty small and seems to anchored to one QB.  Kinda like Jimbo at this point.

Well he has coached 3 QB’s who have won the Heisman and has 3 QB’s, soon to be 4, in the NFL as starters.

I think Frost's biggest issue is he wanted the players to set the culture so they owned it, like Tom did, but that only works if you already have a successful culture established. You gotta kick some butts and break people down to mold a losing team into winners before you can let them police themselves.

You see Rhule breaking guys down and building them backup in the preseason clips. Specifically when he sent the first team D off the practice field twice. They knew what he was doing, why he was doing it, and they embrace/learned from it. Now look at them!

I remember being completely enthralled with that clip. I was extremely impressed with how Reimer and Heinrich guided the D through that practice. I can’t remember which time it was they got sent off, but the event that triggered it was a d-lineman hitting the QB and Rhule went beserk about playing with discipline, i.e. not hitting a green jersey player. One of the D-Lineman said back, “tell those m’fers to block then!” or something very similar. When Reimer and He Rich got them all together in the indoor facility, I was impressed on how they calmed them all down and got them refocused. It was that clip that convinced me this D was going to be pretty salty.

@caveman99 Not quite. It's how often opponents run it compared to what they normally do (X-axis), versus how successful they are at running compared to what they normally are (Y-axis). Bottom left quadrant means that opponents have run the ball against us less often than they usually do, and when they do run it against us, they are less successful at it than they usually are .

So yeah, we've been pretty solid at run defense, despite only being a 3-3 up front (instead of 3-4 or 4-3).

Thanks, still pretty damn impressive. These Blackshirts are as fun to watch as any squad since 2010.
