Blackie Sherrod, a retired columnist with newspapers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, used to bring up the option of the NCAA going back to single platoon football.
The advantages are:
1) Less football scholarships, say 45 compared to 85 under current system;
2) Eases Title IX problems by cutting women's scholarships by 40, or keep same number of total scholarships, but bring back men's sports cut as a result of Title IX.
3) Ease long term health problems for 325 lb lineman. Playing both sides of ball should result in less bulky linemen.
