    I just think you have to zoom out on some of this analysis instead of it just being in a vacuum of "QB versus QB."

    Martinez had to do a lot on his own many times because the offensive line wasn't blowing open holes for our backs to carry the team down the field...and also because we frankly haven't exactly had a really great back on this roster since Washington departed.

    So this season, if the line plays well and our backs rack up considerably more running yardage than in the past two years people will really pile on with how bad Martinez was when it may not be an apples to apples situation.

    And before I get s*** for this take, I do think Thompson is at least a bit better than Adrian.

    I am a film guy always. Watch the tape....watch the drop back of CT vs AM. Watch how one throws off the back foot and side arms balls and the other doesn't. Watch one get the ball batted at the line every fourth throw and one doesn't. Watch the quick release and decision making vs each other. Watch the footwork and release.

    The initial starter doesn't mean much to me for this room this year. When Whipple doesn't see someone great he will distribute carries. If he feels you are an impact player you will see a load of carries/receptions.

  3. Ervin works hard and has good IQ to the playbook. I think that will always help someone see the field...he does all things good. Just not sure if he does anything great. Time will tell. I think right now AG is our #1.

    Iowa didn't adjust everyone's eligibility down a year on their official roster like Nebraska did.  So you are seeing their "normal seniors" and "super seniors".

    Take Jack Campbell.  Graduated HS in 2019, didn't redshirt, so this is his 4th season.  Iowa lists him as a senior.  If he was at Nebraska he would be listed as a junior (see Luke Reimer).

    That makes more sense. I forgot that some teams didn't update that (which is odd). Needs to be one way or the other imo so all teams on the same page.

    I have no basis for this, but I am guessing it is pretty common with the free Covid year.  Not a lot of guys hang around for 6 years and are fine leaving after exhausting their "traditional eligibility".

    These guys are probable starters that would be seniors under the non-Covid rules (I think the guys I marked with a asterisk can not come back next year, and under normal rules would not be playing this year).  Both on offense  and defense we could be starting 6-8 "seniors".

    Thompson 5th year

    Grant 5th year

    * Manning 6th year

    * Martin 6th year

    Palmer 4th year / no RS

    Washington 4th year / no RS

    Garcia-Casteneda 4th year / no RS

    * Vokelek 6th year

    * Hixon 6th year

    * Bando 6th year

    Feist 5th year

    * Drew 5th year

    Nelson 4th year / no RS

    * Tannor 5th year

    Mathis 5th year

    Reimer 4th year / no RS

    * Kolarvic 6th year

    Clark 5th year

    Newsome 4th year / no RS

    Brown 4th year / no RS

     All teams had the same covid free year and still have many starting SRs. Iowa for example is slated to start 8 Seniors on defense alone this year....I agree we aren't inexperienced as it seems.

    Yea, since we have a QB committed at least one guy will have to move on, if not two.  Smothers seems to be the obvious one if he's behind Purdy.  RB I don't think they take one this year unless he's an absolute stud that you cannot pass up, but as of now they don't seem to be in on anybody of that caliber.  We probably lose 1-2 guys out of this room as well probably depending on which guys are at the top of the depth chart by year end.  WR I think Joseph will really put the pressure on some of those young guys that he didn't recruit. 3-4 guys move on there.  Competition at all DB spots will be fierce this year, very easily could see at least 3 of those guys transferring.  We will see a lot of movement after these new coaches will get a year to evaluate and work with all the guys they didn't recruit.

    Hardy, Grimes and Jones are on the chopping block for WRs. Smothers leaves if no PT this year (surprised he hasn't yet tbh). After CT is done I think the battle will be Purdy vs Haarberg.

  7. Crazy to think we will probably start only 5 total Seniors this year which is great if we have a good season looking into the near future. I also think we can trim up some of our skill positions for more lineman etc. We don't need 6 scholarship QBs next year. I wouldn't sign a RB this year given we have 6 scholarships there and don't graduate anyone.

    Really happy to hear Omar Manning being the first name out of Mickey's mouth when asked about who was impressing so far. Also don't think I'd heard him specify that he's looking for 6 ready to play, but that does make sense. Gonna be competitive to get on the field.

    Mickey wasn't happy with today's practice though, and listed himself as the most consistent in the room which I think is pretty hilarious.

    I'd be surprised if this wasn't the 6 as of early on...

    I can't be the only husker fan that believes that Rahmir is a scat back and not a number 1 running back bc of his smaller body type. I have never questioned if he wasn't a good receiver as a running back i question if he can handle the responsibility of blocking a bigger de or lb or has enough size to get that extra yard.  Yes i know Nebraska has running backs in case they need to like Yant but overall i feel Grant is the most complete running back in that room rn.

    Ameer was a little more compact muscles wise maybe but size doesn't always matter. Rahmir was actually a good blocker last year and can catch the ball very well. Does struggle a tad in between the tackles. I think he starts game 1 based off of experience and trust.

    As has been pointed out multiple times - including just now in this thread - this is completely inaccurate.

    But some people want to believe it so the myth lives on.

    You can't just dismiss field goals. If you can't move the ball in the red zone you resort to a FG...I think you made a point it wasn't as bad as it seemed but end of the day you were 71st in PPG. Year before 102nd. We haven't been a top 50 offense since Frost has been here.

    Nebraska was 20th in yards per game last year and 71st in scoring...can't just be due to 8/16 FGs.

  11. 8 minutes ago, Undone said:

    @Mavric: I think this points as much as anything to Frost & Lubick's scheme & play calling being very overblown on the list of problems. We really didn't have much trouble moving the ball down the field, and we ranked ahead of Wisconsin & Iowa in points per game (and I understand Iowa's number goes down from that curb stomping in the B1G title game but still).

    We had two games where Martinez was a huge liability (Illinois & Purdue). Then we had 2-3 games where in my opinion special teams ultimately lost us the game.

    We had the talent and the offensive coaching overall to be a 7-5 team, just in general. Before anybody jumps all over that I'm not saying the talent and the offensive coaching was spectacular or anything - but it was enough to make us a 7-5 team.

    It was the acute, catastrophic stuff that we couldn't overcome that was the difference IMO.

    The run game was the main reason the offense couldn't do sh*t in the red zone. Outside of AM scrambles and runs the RB and OL were awful.

    Leading RB per game vs P5 teams:

    Illinois: Ervin 33 yards (2.8 ypc)

    Oklahoma: Johnson 42 yards (3.8 ypc)

    Michigan St: Johnson 76 yards (4.0 ypc)

    Northwestern: Yant 127 yards (9.8 ypc) W

    Michigan: Johnson 67 yards (3.9 ypc)

    Minnesota: Johnson 83 yards (7.5 ypc)

    Purdue: Yant 60 yards (10 ypc) AM 4 INTs

    Ohio St: Johnson 62 yards (3.9 ypc)

    Wisconsin: Belt: 31 yards (4.4 ypc)

    Iowa: Yant 44 yards (3.4 ypc)

    Only one time did a RB go for over 100 yards...and what do you know we won that game. Twice if you count Stepp vs Fordham.

    Probably in the minority here, but I like the offseason additions to the defensive line.  I'll be surprised if they're not better than last year.  Particularly in pass rushing.

    Stille and Daniels for Wynn and Drew. T Rob and Nash also a year older. I'd say we are fine... The bigger difference will be the Edge guys with Nelson, Mathis and Tannor.
