  1. If someone doesn't want to credit a coach they invariably want some other excuse for the success. For example, if it wasn't for Elway and Davis, Denver wouldn't have won those 2 Super Bowls. Yea, Duh! Gee wonder why Reeves emver caould do it? If Callahan wins the North this season, some will say that it is for some other reason, such as, the teams in the North are all down, because of new coaches, etc. With some people he will never be good enough or acceptable! How many times did Solich win the North- 0?
  2. The CU boards illustrate the impassioned and intense feelings that those "fans" have for the Huskers. It is their rivalry, for certain. The question is; do we just ignore them or reject them overtly?
  3. In the ESPN piece the saga didn't mention Shanahan, who was HC for Al Davis for part of a year. Same problem as all the others. After AL fired him, he came to Denver and won 2 Super Bowls. During one game in Oakland, during the Elway era and during pre-game warmups, Shanahan told Elway to throw and take Als head off. JE gave him a double take, followed through, narrowly missed, but it was noted! The many people who hate Davis must make quite a crowd!
  4. #20..NU..4*s- 5, 5*s- 1 #38..KU..4*s- 1, 5*s- 0 #41.KSU.4*s- 2, 5*s- 0 #47..MU..4*s- 1, 5*s- 0 #48..CU..4*s- 0, 5*s- 0 #63.ISU..4*s- 0, 5*s- 0 The ranking are not the end all, of course. What develops with good coaching and a kid's determination can make up for the rankings. However, it seems that there is a trend here, especially with the more established coaches, such as, at MU and ISU. KU appeared to do reasonably well, but then they lost perhaps the most. NU now has an experienced staff PLUS an experienced QB. If defenses win championships, we look pretty well in that dept too!
  5. It would be terrific if he were Nebraska born. He desires a great deal of respect! I wonder if he supports Wyo, UT or NU?
  6. Unfortunately, I don't know of a team outside of the North that we play annually. It would be interesting if Pederson would get a long term contract with someone. I agree PSU would be interesting! The difficulty of that happening is that elite teams tend to not want a potential loss before conference play. So, they contract for only a couple of years. The USC game is an example. An independent Notre Dame only did a back to back, as well. The have probably regreted it. CU, historically, has had great pre-conference schedules, but the payout for the visitor couldn't be terrific with the attendance in Boulder. By the way does anyone know what UT's attendance is in Austin? We should have 80K for that game in Lincoln.
  7. Since none of the teams in the North are "worthy" of being our rival, let's make an effort to totally reject the Buffy's comments about their "big" rivalry with us.
  8. Since we don't play OU everyear nor any of the Big 12 South's teams, do we need a new rival? CU years ago claimed us under the Red Letter Day on their calendar, but many of their fans, mostly students, are so vile. We're their rival, but who cares? Maybe we can select another Big 12 North team that would most likely be a real threat to our season. This year, I'm guessing that our best competition for the North title is ISU. Barney Cotton stated last year, before we played them, that they were the REAL Red! MO, KSU and KU lost a lot of players, although the Purple (with Freeman) might be a fun rival. What do you boys and girls think?
  9. Do you want to drive the CU fan base crazy- designate a major rival other than them. Since we don't play OU every year it would need to be someone that we do. Who is the toughest team in the North other than CU year in and year out? Remember who said that they were the REAL Red? Are the Wildcats coming back?
  10. Does the 6'5" ISU receiver return this coming season?
  11. But, media hype, booze and Ward Churchill have their little minds confused!
  12. I have a suggestion, if you want to badmouth a program go to the basketball forum!
  13. Penn ST has a gold mine of high school talent within 200 miles. Michigan and OSU have fabulaous talent in both ststes that they can control. FLorida and CA have perhaps the best athletes in the country. We don't have that regional talent luxury and therefore to keep up with the top schools we must be better recruiters than the rest just to stay even.
  14. Anthony West, Ricky Thenarse, Cruz Barrett, Maurice Purify, Kenny Wilson or who? I'd like to know your choice and the reasons behind it. Obviously, the competition at that position is a big factor. Can a lineman shine in the trenches? Does our weakness, at CB this past season, allow someone to get big praise? Does a Frosh have a chance over a JC player? The Spring Fling is a nice practice and showpiece, but quite frankly isn't a good indication of too much with players still recovering from surgery, green shirted QBs and Frosh recruits not showing until the Fall. It is about promotion and 2007 recruiting, but that's still okay.
  15. When will Pederson decide that this MBB is not going anywhere? If he fires Collier will the weird element rise up again like they did re Solich? This is really all about the University's students, financial supporters and fans. I believe it's time for action.
  16. Many were saying before this season, that we would have a terrific team. Now, should Collier go the way of Solich?
  17. HuskerGJ: I believe your comments are accurate. My thought was to go behind the rehab of CU fans to what outsiders observe. Then we can get more and more recruits from the State of Colorado and elsewhere!
  18. pigsonawing: ...forward that to a Buff's (CU Bison) site. By the way, I think the last Ralphie was a female. It's too bad that this year's game isn't in Boulder again this year. What a great way to get quality kids to leave the state.
  19. pigsonthewing: Thanks for the note on the ISU comparison. That would be a swing of +14 from 2004-2005. Who is going to be the toughest opponent in the Big 12 North? I suppose that would be primarily based on returning starters and a QB with some experience.
  20. Could it be that Herian had such a great 2003 was because he was the only really gifted receiver that year? Certainly with the weapons we'll have this year at WR, Herian couldn't be expected to have that kind of repeat peerformance.
  21. I presume that Phillips won't be starting again. If he plays, the defense will know he is only in for blocking. Along with the CBs play, this postion seemed to me to be the most deficient. Weakness' On '05 team: 1) TEs (blocking only!) 2) CBs (couldn't stop the sideline completion) 3) FB (blocking only)
  22. Red Snow- In the last 3 yrs, the 1st string WRs in the Big 12 were 6'3" and above. Wouldn't they all qualify as blue chippers?
  23. Fron rojo: I. The heights of the coaches "All-Big 12 Wide Receivers" 2002-2005: (1st and 2nd team selections.) --6’ 5” Todd Blythe, ISU --6’ 5” James Terry, KSU --6’ 4” Roy Williams, UT --6’ 4” Justin Gage, MU --6’ 3” Jarrett Hicks, TT --6’ 3” Joel Filani, TT --6’ 3” Dominique Zeigler, BU --6’ 3” Travis Wilson, OU . --6’ 2” Robert Johnson, TT --6’ 2” Rashaun Woods, OSU --6’ 1” D’Juan Woods, OSU --6’ 1” Terrence Murphy, TAM --6’ 1” Reggie Newhouse, BU --5’ 11” Mark Clayton, OU --5’ 9” Wes Welker, TT Over half of them are 6’ 3” or taller. It seems to be a case of “You don’t have to be tall…. But it helps.” . II. No position has had more changes for us. A. Three Wide Receiver coaches in three years. --Ron Brown, Turner Gill, Ted Gilmore. --This will be the first time since 2002-03 that our receivers will have had the same coach for two consecutive seasons. . B. From “Blockers who can catch” to “Receivers who can block.” An oversimplification. But the change in emphasis could be argued that way. . III. Wide Receiver history since Bill Callahan arrived: (FWIW... Notice: Those over 6’ 3” have been few.) A. Graduated: --6’ 4” Matt Schroder --6’ 1” Shamus McCoy --6’ 0” Ben Zajicek --6’ 0” Willie Amos --5’ 11” Mark LeFlore --5’ 10” Jack O’Holleran --5’ 10” Joel Jackson B. Moved on: --6’ 2” Andy Birkel --6’ 1” Tyler Kenney --6’ 0” Ross Pilkington --6’ 0” Santino Panico --5’ 11” Kade Pittman --5’ 9” Ronnie Smith --5’ 9” Marque McCray C. Returning for 2006: (’05 catches in parentheses) --6’ 4” Todd Peterson, So (9) --6’ 2” Nate Swift, So (45) --6’ 2” Chris Brooks, So (0) --6’ 0” Terrence Nunn, Jr (43) --6’ 0” Frantz Hardy, Jr (25) --6’ 0” Isaiah Fluellen, Sr (4) --6’ 0” Dan Erickson, Jr (0) --5’ 11” Grant Mulkey, Sr (26) D. The Incoming: All are 6’ 3” or taller. We’ve learned to wait to see just who arrives academically eligible, but it should be… --6’ 5” Will Henry, Fr (Texas Class 5A All-State—Hon. Mention) --6’ 4” Maurice Purify, Jr (Juco All-American; Scout.com 5-star; Rivals #1 Juco receiver.) --6’ 4” Menelik Holt, Fr (Emfinger 5-Star; Rivals #44 WR.) --6’ 3” Tyrell Spain, Jr (Now enrolled; Juco All-Conference—1st team) . The Bottom Line: Height isn’t everything. All-Big 12 Wes Welker (5’ 9”) is now with the Miami Dolphins. All-Big 12 Mark Clayton (5’ 11”) is with the Baltimore Ravens. But… We’ve never had a group of incoming receivers quite like this. Things are changing at Nebraska. The rest of the Big 12 is noticing it. We should be aware of it also. Just some things to think about…..
  24. From sonofahusker: Turn arounds from 2004 to 2005: Texas Tech 2004: 10-70, 2005: 31-34 +57 points Kansas State 2004: 21-45, 2005: 27-25 +26 points Colorado 2004: 20-26, 2005 30-3 +21 points Oklahoma 2004: 3-30, 2005: 24-31 +20 points In '05, we lost to Kansas 40-15. I'm going on record by stating that we'll beat Kansas in '06 by 33+ points, and exceed our 57 point turn around vs. Tech. Nebraska 42 Kansas 7 Man, that's going to feel good! __________________ From rojo: KU for 2006: Offense: --6 starters return. --No returning QB Defense: Their strong suit last fall. But... --3 starters return. Things look to be a bit thin for Mangino....
