  1. My heart is with Gary Johnson. Who's that? That's the guy the mainstream press decided long ago you wouldn't hear about because there's no way he can win the nomination. Which becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. They made the guideline (which they don't follow) that a candidate has to score at least 2% in their polls to be invited to the debate. Sounds reasonable, right? Except they don't put Johnson's name on the poll as a choice. So he doesn't make the 2% threshold, isn't invited to the debates, and isn't covered by the media because he isn't even a 'serious enough' candidate to make it to the polls. Pretty disgusting. It's not like he isn't a qualified candidate. 2 time Governor of New Mexico. He's the only candidate with positive approval ratings in his home state. He's a real fiscal conservative/social liberal. Doesn't just pay lip service to it. Excellent small "l" libertarian. I wish like hell he was the GOP nomination for President. But yes, the GOP candidates are slugging it out. That's how it goes during a primary battle. They are always ugly. But better for stuff to come out now, rather than as a surprise in October 2012. There is no way I would vote for Perry (and he's not going to get the nomination) and he wouldn't win the General election. It's doubtful I'd vote for Romney (and I can't think of anyone who's too excited about voting for him. They call him 'The Robot' - but he's considered the safe candidate to take on Obama) The base will not be excited voting for him, but he could squeak a win out in the General election. Cain has a shot and I'd consider voting for him. But I think he has a high chance of crashing and burning during the General election. I'd happily vote for either Paul of Johnson, but they have a chance of a snowflake in hell of winning the Primary. And that's a shame. Because I think either one could win the election.
  2. It is good to see that I am not the only American that reads the foreign press! Have you lived in any other countries? I've lived in Spain while I was in the USAF. In fact, that's where I had my son. I've TDY's to other countries. But yeah, I look at news from all over. One of the main sites I got to for news is the BBC. Although now that they have auto start video ads, they are even more annoying than many of the US news sites.
  3. I have yet to talk to an Occupier here in Lincoln that doesn't have a job. I don't believe joblessness is a prerequisite for Occupying. When I covered the Occupy protest in Minnesota I found some interesting stats on just who was there participating in the protest. http://pncminnesota.wordpress.com/2011/10/07/occupymn-who-are-the-99/ Here's a snip: Education level: High School diploma only – 11% Currently in college – 27% Associates degree/VoTech – 9% BA/BS degree – 35% Masters – 10% PhD – 8% Political affiliation: None – 47% DFL – 35% GOP – 0% Other third party(ies) – 18% Employment status: Employed (includes self-employed) – 64% Unemployed – 15% Students (full time) – 13% Retired – 8% Household income (gross) NOTE: the income brackets are set up to show where attendees household income breaks as a percentile) $0 – $24,000 – 36% $25,000 – $67,000 – 21% $68,000 – $99,000 – 13% ($68,000 and higher is the ‘richest’ top 25%) $100,000 – $113,000 – 12% ($100,000 and higher is the ‘richest’ top 15%) $114,000 – 379,000 – 16% ($114,000 and higher is the ‘richest’ top 10%) $380,000 – 1,500,000 – 2% ($350,000 and higher is the ‘richest’ top 1%) $1,600,000 + – 0% ($1,600,000 and higher is the ‘richest’ top 0.1%)
  4. I saw it yesterday on Haaretz, Debka, Al Jazeera and Russia Today. Sorry... I won't go to those sights from here at work. Yeah - I can understand that. I'm seeing it on Indian, Israeli, and UK media today. (And it made it onto Yahoo just a few minutes ago)
  5. Looks like we are in for some interesting days ahead. China is allegedly selling Iran ballistic missiles, Iran announces it has enough enriched uranium for nuclear bombs, Israel doing unannounced tests of its Jericho missiles, Egypt and other neighboring countries are in chaos, and we are making plans with Britain to attack Iran. Hold onto your hats. http://news.in.msn.c...umentid=5564984 London: Britain and the US are reportedly drawing up a joint plan to attack Iran after reports said Tehran now has enough enriched uranium for four nuclear weapons. US President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron are preparing for a war against Tehran following Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's regime being linked to three assassination plots on foreign soil, officials told the Daily Mail. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Ehud Barak were also preparing for an attack against Iran. Tel Aviv has successfully test-fired a rocket capable of carrying a nuclear warhead that could strike Iran, the report said. Sources said Britain would be likely to agree to any US decision to invade Iran, even though the ministry of defence was "stretched to breaking point by swingeing budget cuts and wars in Afghanistan and Libya". A special unit at the ministry has been instructed to work out Britain's strategy if its army invades Iran. NOTE: I have been unable to find many other News organizations carrying this news. So unless it becomes more widely reported, take this with a grain of salt!
  6. Good for you, that you haven't been subject to economic injustice. That your job hasn't been outsourced, and that you have not lost your savings, your health care, or your home. However many people have lost those things, and see the control that the wealthy have over our politicians and the laws and regulations they have pushed for. In addition I see our hawkish foreign policy as another outcome of the wealthy owning our government. You are making assumptions about me that are incorrect. That's beside the point, though. You seem to be mashing two issues together that are separate issues - income disparity and power. It isn't a new thing that the rich (and therefore powerful) have a stranglehold on our government. It's just that in previous years we've been placated enough that we ignored it. But when our comforts have been removed, or we fear they may be removed, well then - now we suddenly notice that our system of government is gamed to grant greater advantage to those who have power. If jobs become more available people will once again go back into their TV watching and possession acquisition stupor and forget all about the glimpse behind the curtain. As for income disparity, it isn't that everyone else is getting poorer (we are experiencing a dip, though, because we are in a recession, but statistically its a small dip) that is creating the disparity. It's the the rich are getting MUCH more rich while the rest of us are making more modest increases. Again - this is off due to the recession, but only a slight dip.
  7. Thanks! Wow. I was making it so much more complicated than it needed to be.
  8. Jeez. After reading this thread I want to take a nice warm bath with a razor blade loofah. I think I had managed to block out the memories of most of those games. Bitter, bitter memories.
  9. Hey folks - wondering how you embed video (example - youtube videos) on this board. I've tried posting the embed code. That didn't work. So I changed the editing mode to html and posted the code - that didn't work. Can someone help me out?
  10. 1997. Miracle in Missouri. Matt Davison's game-saving touchdown catch that kept us in the running for National Champs. Hmmm....having trouble embeding the video.
  11. OWS, generally speaking, isn't against "capitalism". They are just against how capitalism is today. They would be more than happy w/ how things were back when the orange and blue line were relatively close together. This is one thing I don't get. Why are people so focused on how much someone else makes? As long as I'm doing well, and perhaps getting some forward momentum going, I'm happy. If someone makes more than me, good for them. I don't begrudge them and they aren't taking money out of my pocket.
  12. POPS!!!! Oh jeez - it's so good to hear from you again! How have you been? You are going to the Ukraine? I've missed you. (In general, not directed at Pops)Also wanted to say that I signed up here a year ago but pretty much just lurked. I was a bit burnt out on Husker sites and needed some down time. This does seem like a nice board and I appreciate the welcome. I'm sure it is disconcerting to have a bunch of new people join all at once, especially new people that know each other. I'll feel my way around and try not to put my foot into it. And, I want to be clear that I like many, many of the people at HM. They are good people. I may have personal differences with Max, but he's done an excellent job with his homepage for Husker news and articles and he has picked some quality persons with good hearts to be mods there. I'm not looking to be a problem child. Not looking back. Just looking forward to a fresh start. Which is why I do appreciate the warm welcome we received so much. GO BIG RED! Same here lady...I have missed you and you insight....man i respected that. Yes its in the works that I may be going to the Ukraine for the rise of HIV and Hep C is going through the roof. We are trying to get funding together to make the trip with the chance we can implement harm reduction. Its fantastic hearing and at least saying hello to you. Everything else you have said I understand...there are good folk all over. Ask CB started off and asking people to lurk at HM...lurk on any BBS and you'll see the same stuff. I dig a lot of people over at HM as calla said they are fantastic folk. As the mod requested leave those sites at the door and I believe this place may become much better . But when you have cats telling us to go here and see what their saying just as the cats of max puffing their chest out at the ending hours of HP...un-needed. Thats all for now Peace to all ...you cant see where you're your going if you keep looking behind you. Update once in a while about your trip, Pops!
  13. True Christians have the decoder ring and know the secret handshake. The serious answer is - when ever you hear someone use the words "True Christian" it is someone looking to impose their view and silence others by marginalizing them.
  14. This decision, to stop supporting them materially, was made after observing several different Occupy protests - either in person or through watching their own livestreams. It's more than a 'few bad apples' and some of these people are in leadership positions within the movement. (I know, they say they don't have leaders, but they do. All groups form leaders) The movement needs to face it that people who have this view, that they should goad violence for PR value, need to be pushed out of the movement. Until they do, they are contributing to an intentionally unsafe environment. Now - if we found out the Coaches or trainers for the Huskers were intentionally creating unsafe conditions that would get their players hurt - and then the U asked me for a donation for the football program - I think many in Husker Nation would rightfully tell them "No. Not until you fix this problem." Doesn't mean they now hate the Huskers or hope for the best for the team. Likewise, as I said before, "I still support many of the ideas. I support their right to peaceful assembly." But I have withdrawn my material support from the Occupy movement and I have discussed why with the local protestors. Some of them understood and agreed this was a serious problem to address. Some were frustrated - frustrated in general, I think. And some were very angry with me and reiterated that they were at war with the 1% and those who are tools of the 1% (which meant the cops) and told me I wasn't steadfast enough to the ideals and too soft. Speaking solely for myself, I don't see how the change that Occupy protesters want can be achieved without eventual violence. To be honest, I've long felt that violent revolution is something I'll see in my lifetime within this country. I'm sure someone will now bring up Ghandi as an example of non-violent protest achieving great things, but you have to understand context. Ghandi was pitted against a waning empire operating half a world away in a country that they couldn't realistically control due to size. That isn't very comparable to the United States today. I don't think you are alone in feeling that way. There's a difference in how you express this (and others within the movement) - you sound resigned that violence may not be avoided - and that's a sane, thoughtful outlook.

  16. http://www.opoa.org/uncategorized/an-open-letter-to-the-citizens-of-oakland-from-the-oakland-police-officers%E2%80%99-association/ Snip from the letter, but real the whole thing. I don't think they are "confused" - I think they are ticked off: As your police officers, we are confused. On Tuesday, October 25th, we were ordered by Mayor Quan to clear out the encampments at Frank Ogawa Plaza and to keep protesters out of the Plaza. We performed the job that the Mayor’s Administration asked us to do, being fully aware that past protests in Oakland have resulted in rioting, violence and destruction of property. Then, on Wednesday, October 26th, the Mayor allowed protesters back in – to camp out at the very place they were evacuated from the day before. To add to the confusion, the Administration issued a memo on Friday, October 28th to all City workers in support of the “Stop Work” strike scheduled for Wednesday, giving all employees, except for police officers, permission to take the day off. That’s hundreds of City workers encouraged to take off work to participate in the protest against “the establishment.” But aren’t the Mayor and her Administration part of the establishment they are paying City employees to protest? Is it the City’s intention to have City employees on both sides of a skirmish line? It is all very confusing to us.
  17. I've attended and offered material support to the local Occupy movement. I did so because I agree that there is a partnership between people with money and our elected officials and that this partnership is hurting our country. It needs to be pruned back. I also very strongly support citizens' right to peaceful assembly and oppose all the BS permit requirements that are meant to make it extremely difficult for citizens to exercise that right. However - I've decided that I won't be giving them anymore money, food, blankets, tarps, etc. Why? Because the movement has a serious problem going on inside it that it needs to address. A serious and dangerous problem. There are people within it that want to incite violence from the police because they feel the PR advantage from the video is valuable to the movement. I've seen, either in person or on livefeeds that different Occupy groups have going, protestors taunting the police. They don't care that other people, the people around them, could get hurt, too. That's dangerous and shows a complete lack of concern for the safety and well-being of your fellow man. I can't support that. You have a tense situation. Police are in full riot gear, lined up. The protestors are unarmed. So some idiots decide the best thing to do in this situation is to taunt the police. In-your-face taunting. Nasty taunting with some spitting thrown in. Are you insane? Do you care nothing about the people around you? And why were they taunting the police? Because they thought it would be 'cool' to have the 'pigs' go all crazy on the livestream. It would help the cause and would be some awesome video, right? That was caught on the audio of the livestream, as well. Talking about how cool it would be and how people would rush out to support them after seeing the pigs attack on tv. I've also heard that discussed, by committee members, at OccupyMN when I've been there dropping off donations. That kind of immaturity can get people killed. I don't, and will never, condone or excuse excessive force used against peaceful, unarmed citizens. So don't think I'm saying if things turn violent, it's the fault of the protestors. (Unless, you know, it is.) What I'm saying is allowing people to stay within your movement that not only hope for violence, but are willing to incite it on their fellows for coolness points or because it's great PR is not something I can support in a way that allows the demonstrators to continue Occupying places. It's not like these people are hidden. They are up front about what they want the 'pigs' to do and the advantages of being clubbed, gassed, or shot with rubber bullets. Some people who have this idea, are organizers and committee members in OccupyMN and I have to assume the same is true elsewhere. They appear to be fine with trying to provoke an action that will injure those around them. They don't care about people. I still support many of the ideas. I support their right to peaceful assembly. But I will no longer do anything makes it possible for them to gather tear gas fodder around themselves. So no more money. No more blankets to keep them warm. No more tarps to keep the rain off. No more vats of warm oatmeal and soups. Not until they get a handle on this dangerous sub-group within the movement that sees fellow protestors as expendable PR opportunities.
  18. All I care about is that he touches grass (and leather) this Saturday. All of our games from here on out are must win games.

  20. They are shut down for 30 days while they negotiate a settlement. And yes, there was a lawsuit and all that over who really owned the site. Why was there a lawsuit over a fan bulletin board site? Because it brings in 1 million in revenue per year.
  21. I had decided before the lawsuit came along that there was no way in hell I would ever give David Max another penny. He's unethical.
  22. Really? They had the flu? I hadn't heard that.
  23. Hello folks - the husband and I would love to attend the Wyoming game but it's hard to do that without tickets. Anyone have 2 they can spare or know about someone trying to sell a pair?
