Nebraska basketball has its work cut out for the season

The Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball teams released their 2004-05 schedules on Monday.

The Cornhusker men will take on four non-conference teams that reached postseason play last year. The non-conference slate features home contests against in-state rival Creighton and Minnesota and road games against UAB, which reached the Sweet 16 last season, and NIT participants Tennessee and Marquette.

“This is a schedule that will be highly competitive throughout the year and will pit us against a number of teams that will receive postseason considerations,” Husker Coach Barry Collier said.

NU also has home games with Arkansas Pine-Bluff, Texas Southern, Morgan State, North Carolina A&T and Montana State before opening Big 12 play. The Huskers will take on Utah Valley State halfway through conference play on Feb. 1.

The Husker women start their season in the Preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

After opening against Western Illinois in the first round, the next three rounds of the Preseason WNIT could feature matchups against a number of 2004 postseason teams, including Notre Dame, Duke, Ohio State, Arizona, South Florida, Middle Tennessee State, Saint Joseph’s and Rice.

In total, the Huskers have the possibility of playing nine non-conference games against teams that reached the NIT or NCAA tournament last season.

“It is going to be anything but easy for us,” NU Coach Connie Yori said.
