The star quality of a class says little or nothing about the future success of any particular individual(s) in the class. That's just a basic statistical principle. Some 5 stars won't succeed in college and some NR's will end up in the NFL. As you note, some NR's can be stars flying under the radar for various reasons (lack of competition, coaching, immaturity, etc.). Some college stars never make it in the pros.

Oddly enough, today's Columbus Dispatch has a story about the Ohio State class of 2003 with 14 players including one 5 star, six 4 star players, seven 3 star players, a top 25 class.

 

Four years later only 1 player remains. Two used all 4 years of eligibility, three left early for the NFL, two had career ending injuries, and seven left the program for other reasons. Included in that seven were four 4 star players.

If Gabbert doesn't get a 5 star. Rivals needs to hire all new people. He's obviously worth all the hype and has performed past his 4 star.

Not to take this thread off-topic, but that raises an interesting point. More than a few people have criticized Callahan's class of '05 due to the losses. The truth is, it happens at every school, with almost every class. A year ago, Arkansas was beginning the season with - for it - one of its best classes ever. Mitch Mustain, Damion Williams, Ben Cleveland, and Norman Anderson - four of the fabled "Springdale 5". As we know, Williams bolted to USC just after the season ended. This spring, Mustain left for USC (how the hell to they do it, anyway???). Just a day or two ago, Norman Anderson announced he's leaving Arkansas. That leaves just Cleveland from the four most heralded recruits in that class.

 

We tend to focus on Nebraska because that's the team we love, and we become distraught when a player leaves. But it happens everywhere...

if people dont think stars are a big deal then just look at some of the recruiting classes of top ten teams right now and see that stars have alot to do with talent level.. look at ryan periloux for lsu also half of usc's team about and Mattew Stafford(georgia) 2006..this year CJ spiller (clemson)..demarco murray(oklahoma)..percy harvin is an athlete (5 star)...vidal hazelton..cj gable..ricky sapp..all those 5 stars and 1 4 star and look at that talent and say that stars dont prove somethin!!

dude what are you talking about?? ur just nameing people off, what he is saying is that there are just as many or more guys that are successful that didnt have the 4 and 5 stars.....i would also agree with him in a way, but i also think you need to go after a 5 star before a 3 star

USC has been winning National titles because of their talent and coaching..What is half of their team man?? ya 5 stars thats pretty much all they care about?? then carroll coaches them into super stars..

What's interesting is what Dr. Rob said last Sunday about USC's talent on "Sports Sound Off." Dr. Rob has close contact with former Husker Eric Stokes, who works in the NFL (not as a player). Stokes told Dr. Rob that even with all the four and five stars USC gets, most of them have not been very successful in the NFL (Maybe it's too soon yet?). So take it for what it's worth. If any USC fan has facts to dispute this, please post away. I personally don't know if this is true or not.

LOL they are in the PAC 10 buddy theirs only like a few good teams in that confrence but then again when you play the ducks,bruins,stanford,and norte dame every years yea ur going 2 win national titles

I think the time has come for all of us to stop this insane belief in the star system used by Rivals and other

high school reporting services. A D1 caliber athlete is a D1 caliber athlete no stars needed. A D1 caliber ranked athlete in high school might be athletically peaked or academically weak. They might have, for what ever the reason, no upside. Stars are not indicative to success. Remember football is a true team sport. It is not like basketball where one player is going to make a great difference. Larry Bird and his college team come to mind here.

 

The rating system is a mechanism for these reporting systems to "huckster" those of you willing to "pay the price" for there reported inside information. Film study and contact information is the standard for true measurement. Give me an average D1 skilled player with passion and heart any day versus a prima-donna high school player with D1 athletic skills but non coach friendly at the high school or D1 level. D1 players coaching friendly and skilled at fundamentals win D1 games as opposed to athletic, non coaching friendly D1 players lacking in fundamentals.

 

Coaching is far more significant than the average fan understands. The "coach friendly" and "heart and passion" for the game of a D1 quality player is far more significant than his "relative" star rating.

 

Relative to coaching and its significance, a great example is the difference in defensive coaching skills of Pellini and Cosgrove. Give them each the same 15 players in a game i.e. an extra lineman, linebacker, corner, and safety in a 4/3 set which coached team would make the better defensive showing? If you don't know the answer to that question find another sport and team to follow.
