Athletic Director Tom Osborne isn't wasting much time.

One day after the firing of football coach Bill Callahan, a plane owned by a Nebraska booster has left Lincoln's Municipal Airport and is headed for Baton Rouge, La., Metro Airport.

Baton Rouge, of course, is home to Louisiana State University, where former NU Defensive Coordinator Bo Pelini currently holds the same title with the Tigers. Pelini is widely considered a leading candidate for the NU job.

The plane, a twin-jet Cessna Citation CJ3, left Lincoln at 1:14 p.m. Sunday and is scheduled to land in Baton Rouge around 3:30.

The plane is registered to Norfolk Iron & Metal Co, in Norfolk, Neb. The president of that company is Richard A. Robinson, whose family received the Clarence Swanson Memorial Award from Nebraska's Football Hall of Fame in 2006. The award is given for "outstanding contributions to the University of Nebraska and the Husker athletic department." Robinson also paid $750,000 for a 10-year lease on a skybox in Memorial Stadium.

LSU was the nation's No. 1 team until a 50-48, three-overtime loss to Arkansas on Friday. The Tigers have dropped to No. 5 in the latest Associated Press poll, and they play Tennessee in the SEC Championship game on Saturday. Head Coach Les Miles is rumored to be a candidate for the Michigan job that was vacated when Lloyd Carr retired.

As I have asked on the Rumorville board - does anyone know who was on the flight? Could the company have business in Baton Rouge area? Has there been a return flight plan logged? (Espcially if it is for Monday or later) Sorry, but this is all speculation, and we have had a lot of that for the last month or more.

Private plane leaves Lincoln for Baton Rouge

BY BRIAN CHRISTOPHERSON / Lincoln Journal Star

Sunday, Nov 25, 2007 - 03:14:29 pm CST

A private plane, a Cessna Citation CJ3 (twin-jet), left Lincoln Municipal Airport at 1:14 Sunday afternoon.

It’s supposed to arrive in Baton Rouge, La., at 3:19.

As every Husker fan is aware, Baton Rouge is the residence of Bo Pelini, figured a lead candidate to become Nebraska’s next head football coach.

The airplane is owned by Norfolk Iron and Metal, a company out of Nebraska.

Dick Robinson, president of Norfolk Iron and Metal, declined comment Sunday as to why the plane was headed to Baton Rouge.

“We have a policy that we don’t reveal that type of information,” said Robinson, a substantial booster to the Husker athletic program.

Told of the flight, LSU athletic director Skip Bertman said, “Are you kidding me?”

Bertman said nobody from Nebraska has contacted him regarding Pelini, LSU’s defensive coordinator.

“I don’t think Tom Osborne would do it any other way,” he said.

This comes a day after three sources told the Journal Star a private search firm had contacted Pelini about the Husker job.

Nebraska fired Bill Callahan on Saturday after four seasons. He was 27-22 in that time.
