Assessing the talent: Definitely a diamond in the rough

Rivals free

ASSETS: Excellent upper and lower body structure and is very strong.

AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT: Needs to play with lower pad level at the point of attack.

MOST IMPRESSIVE PLAY: Switched from SDE to DT just before a third-and-one situation in the first quarter, making a key tackle for no gain.

CONCLUSION: He could play defensive end but he has the potential body size to make an excellent DT. Currently has no offers, but he recently transferred into East St. Louis. When colleges come to watch his receiving corps they will definitely take notice.

Odds of becoming a Cornhusker: 15%

(teaser from Rivals) Illini head coach Ron Zook was in East St. Louis last Friday night to check on several top prep prospects. [Kraig Appleton, Terry Hawthorne, some 2010 guys] One of the Flyers that reportedly caught Zook's eye is defensive tackle Ty Phillips.

Has visited Illinois and Missouri. Waiting on ACT scores before offering.

Illinois could add another East St. Louis Flyer to their 2009 commitment list. Ty Phillips, a 6-foot-3, 250-pound offensive lineman visited Illinois last Saturday and told Rivals.com that the Illini are on the top of his list, despite not receiving an offer yet. The Illini have received verbal commitments from East St. Louis seniors Terry Hawthorne and Tommie Hopkins and are expected to receive a commitment from 6-foot-3 wide receiver Kraig Appleton.
