Huskers rally past Sun Devils

OMAHA — They'd shared this vision together all season long. That's why Nebraska's first-ever win at the College World Series — a 5-3 come-from-behind effort against Arizona State in which the Huskers needed to collectively clutch up — seemed so perfect to senior first baseman Curtis Ledbetter.

"We went about our regular business and played our game out there, and you know what, who's the hero today?" Ledbetter asked. "Nobody knows. We just won — again.

OMAHA, Neb. — Arizona State will have to take the scenic route if it's going to win the College World Series. The Sun Devils were defeated by the hometown Nebraska Cornhuskers, 5-3, Friday, pushing them to the loser's bracket, where they'll face Tennessee Sunday at 11 a.m.

The Volunteers fell to Florida, 6-4, in Friday's first game. Whoever loses Sunday will be eliminated from the tournament.

Post Gazette: College World Series: Huskers break through

Joba Chamberlain allowed just five hits in seven innings and Ryan Wehrle hit a two-run single, rallying Nebraska to its first College World Series victory, 5-3, against Arizona State last night in Omaha, Neb.

The Cornhuskers (57-13) enjoyed the home-field advantage that comes with playing 58 miles away from their Lincoln campus. They were a combined 0-4 in their only other CWS appearances, in 2001 and '02.

OMAHA, NEB. - Nebraska righthander Joba Chamberlain didn't need his best stuff to pitch the Cornhuskers to their first College World Series victory. He needed only to ride the wave of emotion provided by the partisan crowd that packed Rosenblatt Stadium on Friday.

Buoyed by 24,904 mostly red-clad supporters, Chamberlain and his Nebraska teammates pushed past Arizona State 5-3 to earn a Sunday night matchup against Florida in the winner's bracket.
