Eric the Red
Huskers Rally for 5-4 Victory over Richmond Charleston, S.C. – Nick Jaros’ 12th-inning RBI single plated Ryan Wehrle, as third-ranked Nebraska rallied for a 5-4 victory over Richmond Sunday afternoon at Riley Park Wehrle, who was hitless in his first five at-bats, started the 12th with a one-out double into the corner before Brandon Buckman was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second with one out. Two batters later, Jaros ripped a 2-1 pitch into center, scoring Wehrle with the game-winner. The Huskers, who improved to 3-1, trailed 4-2 heading into the ninth before rallying, as Luke Gorsett’s two-run homer off of Ja Jones sent the game into extra frames. The comeback made a winner of Brett Jensen, who fired four shutout innings to pick up the relief. Gorsett, Andy Gerrch and Steve Edlefsen all had two hits apiece, as Nebraska managed nine hits, but got three homers, including solo shots from Jeff Christy and Gerch, as NU won a game when trailing in the ninth for the first time in nearly two years The Huskers saw a 2-0 lead evaporate in the seventh, as the Spiders had five hits in the frame, highlighted by a two-run double by Ben Zeskind and run-scoring hits by Joe Mahoney and Matt McKenna off reliever Jared Cranston, who allowed two runs on three hits in a short relief stint, but was bailed out by Gorsett’s blast. The comeback by the Spiders offset a strong outing from Shirek, as the redshirt freshman was exceptional in his Husker debut. The right-hander from Minot, N.D., took a shutout into the seventh, but did not factor into the decision. Shirek struck out four and allowed three singles through the first six frames before Victor Croglio’s leadoff single began the seventh. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third, when Christy launched a one-out solo blast to left off of Richmond starter Rob Berzinskas to give the Huskers a 1-0 lead. Christy’s first homer of the season was the Huskers’ first hit of the afternoon. Nebraska used the long ball again one inning later, as Gerch’s first homer of the season gave the Huskers a two-run cushion. The sophomore sent a 1-0 offering from Berzinskas into the Palmetto trees in left for his first homer of the season. Other than the two homers, Berzinekas held the Huskers in check, allowing just four hits over six frames, as he left with the Spiders holding a 2-0 lead but the Huskers would rally in the ninth. Richmond had two chances against Shirek in the early frames, getting two on in both the third and sixth innings before the Husker right-hander got out of the jams unscathed. In the third, Zeskind singled with two outs before Mahoney was hit by a pitch, but could not plate a run as Matt McKenna grounded into an inning-ending fielder’s choice. Three innings later, an error and a two-out walk to Alex Hale gave the Spiders runners on first and second, but Shirek got Cameron Brown to ground into a fielder’s choice to end the inning The Spiders finally stuck in the seventh, scoring three times, including three runs off the Husker bullpen. Shirek gave up a leadoff single to Croglio before Anthony Sandstrom greeted Drew Schwab with a single to right, moving runners to first and second with no outs. Schwab got Alex Wotring to ground out to first, as the Spiders put the tying run on base. Ben Zeskind, who had four of the Spiders’ 10 hits, then knotted the game with a two-run double that one-hopped the wall in left. Cranston retired the next hitter, but surrendered consecutive singles to Matt McKenna and Andrew Justice, giving the Spiders their first lead of the afternoon. With one out in the ninth, Nick Jaros coaxed a one-out walk before Gorsett, who lead all of junior college baseball with 24 homers last spring, sent a 1-0 pitch from Spider reliver Ja Jones over the wall in left, tying the score at four apiece In the top of the 10th, Mahoney opened the inning with an infield hit before being sacrificed into scoring position. After an intentional walk, Alex Hale hit a short roller that was misplayed by Steve Edlefsen, loading the bases with one out. Edlefsen would redeem himself moments later, starting an inning-ending 5-2-3 double play. In the bottom of the frame, Edlefsen singled with one out and stole second before Wehrle’s grounder moved the Husker base runner to third. Buckman quickly fell behind 0-2, but coaxed a walk to put runners on the corers for Andy Gerch, who lined out to short to end the threat. NU had another opportunity in the 11th, putting runners on first and second with two outs, but could not score as Bryce Nimmo grounded out to end the inning. The Huskers return to action Friday afternoon, when they travel to Houston, Texas, for the Rice Invitational, where they will take on Texas State, Rice and St.John’s. NU will open tournament play Friday at 1 p.m. against Texas State. Nebraska Baseball Richmond vs #3 Nebraska Feb 19, 2006 at Charleston, S.C.
