BC's Breakdown: No, the Wolves did not destroy the whole picnic

There will be no attempt here to alleviate any concerns from the concerned about what was witnessed Saturday night.

Because this guy with a news-editorial degree sure doesn't know, and you sure don't know, and your neighbor sure doesn't know what happens next, even if he thinks he knows.

Start with what your optimistic friends are saying: Maybe it was just a bad opening night in a new defensive scheme against some plucky Sunbelt team that is about to go and win 10 games and stress out Miami this week. Games like that happen, after all. And, parity. Right? Parity. That's a real thing. And it's not like the big Red took an 'L.'

Now listen to your other friends, who might also want to be referred to as "realists" whether that's true or not. They're saying maybe Arkansas State is pretty much like Wyoming in 2013. That was a Cowboys team that finished 5-7 after a lot of people here convinced themselves after Week 1 that Wyoming was a dangerous outfit and Brett Smith was maybe a future NFL star quarterback.

I pretty much agree with this. I decided several years ago not to try and glean very much information from games like this regardless of the outcome and performance.

Is this any more alarming than beating Idaho State 73-7 was exciting? Or any bigger cause for concern than barely holding on against South Dakota State in 2010? We beat Western Illinois 56-17 in Bill Callahan's first game of what would then become a disastrous 2004 season.

It ended up definitely being a little too close for comfort, but it's prudent as fans to allow the players and coaches to decide on the field what actually happens in games against better teams with bigger stakes without either needlessly condemning them as mediocre OR praising them into unrealistic expectations.
