  1. Spent nine years (1994-2002) as a NFL position coach, and while his hot temper could be a drawback, he's well thought of in pro circles. One scout explained, "He runs that team like an NFL team." http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d823bfbe4/article/stoops-pelini-among-college-coaches-with-nfl-potential?module=HP11_content_stream
  2. I'll concede..... don't really know a whole lot about Stanford's D. They're probably slow, but if we played them, I think Luck would light us up. TM would then have to go score for score. No way in hell we do that riding the RexTrain. TM would have to complete a few passes on critical 3rd downs. That's what I'm talking about - and hence the premise of the OP
  3. "Very" good point. Turner isn't going to be able to man-handle anybody with his blocking and the previous game dropped a Charmin soft easy TD pass. He is electric and a great talent but just like everybody else he has to "earn" playing time. Not being able to block and dropping easy TD passes don't help. GBR!! "Not being able to block"? Really?
  4. Agree - but you are making a HUGE assumption (I think) that we are going to be in close games or low scoring games where we can rely on running..... Are you sure about that with this d? I know I'm not. Until we see this def. stop a team that can run and get off the field on 3rd down, I'm not buying in. To that end, I feel that we're going to be in a shoot out in the B1GC and BCS - and in order to win those games you'll have to convert a few 3rd and 8's or 3rd and 15's....
  5. Are you aware Michigan State has one of the best defenses in the country? ND hung 31 points on that great MSU defense. I'm not discounting MSU's defense one bit. I also said - we take what the d gives but sooner or later we're going to go up against a def. like WI's that has the athletes to stop the run. Now few here will say that we "still got yards" running on WI. Yes and no. Not when it mattered. I'm talking about the future: I'm not convinced that we can run all day on PSU. Then what about the B1GC and BCS bowl? You can bet we'll go up against d's that can slow down the run game. I'm not convinced that our d is all of a sudden a shut down d. Not yet by any means. Bottom line: We have to be a little more balanced - and TM has to be able to throw it better... and the WR's need to be able to make clutch plays. Do you'll really think NU can keep running it 80-90% of the time and win a BCS bowl?
  6. Okay, maybe I'm nit picking here but I do have concerns: Against WI, UW and the cup cakes we mixed in the pass a lot more and had the WR's nicely integrated with the play calling but against MSU the pass was almost a rarity. Now I get that the offense takes what the defense gives but I also see a trend where we are going back to a lot more option, wing-t, pistol, etc. Basically a lot of run formations. Don't get me wrong, I like that but what happens against the good/great defenses? We can't make a living having TMart on the edge pitching the ball and being so lose with it...... or making the wrong read on a ZR option. We have to be able to throw the ball to keep better defenses off balance. The irony in this whole thing is that we might not see that great defense all year unless we run the table and play someone like Bama/LSU in the Rose Bowl (or whatever BCS bowl we end up in). Even drawing a team like OU or Stanford won't be easy going against being run heavy. In the B1GC, going up against UW or OSU won't be easy just running a majority of the time..... Don't get me wrong - my sig says "Run the ball...." but I'm concerned that bec. we don't pass it as much lately, TM is not getting the live reps and thereby his accuracy and timing is not getting better. So..... what gives? Do we continue with this run heavy offense or try to be more balanced? More importantly, what's the point in having big time play makers like Turner, Bell, Reed and Enunwa if they hardly touch the ball?
  7. Kevin Williams and Jay Guy say hello. Add Big Vincent Valentine in that mix too
  8. I'm very worried about @OSU next year. If Miller continues improving at the rate he is......it's going to be tough. 2 things have to ABSOLUTELY happen the minute 2011 closes: 1) Get TM into a QB academy of some sort to fix his passing/QB skills. Just imagine if he did. Our passing game would be lethal with the weapons we have. If TM does not improve, then what a huge waste of talent it would be for Bell, Enunwa and Turner. 2) Get a couple of faster LB's and one's who can tackle in space - bec. that's what we'll need to slow down mobile QB's. Running the peso will not work with teams not named MSU, PU and NW.
  9. Wisconsin ripping NU is kind of a poor point in my book. Barry never coached there, he was a linebacker. It pains me to say it but if any place influenced him it was Iowa and Hayden Fry where he spent the most time as a coach before UW. "A lot of my philosophy was based upon the foundation I had starting at Nebraska," Alvarez said. http://espn.go.com/c...ska-cornhuskers Funny..... only a badger fan would not know that.
  10. PSU is an enigma.... Their D looks tough but it's hard to tell based on the competition. They played 1 tough team - Bama - and Bama quit scoring in the 3rd. We, OTOH have played WI, MSU and OSU - 3 legit top notch defenses. If PSU forces us to pass & TM starts throwing INT's then we're in trouble but as long as we can get 4-5 yards a pop we'll be in good shape. One thing I noticed about PSU is that they're getting better at the QB spot. McGloin (sp?) looks like he's cemented the starting spot - which is good for NU bec. he's less mobile than Boldin - but still a lot more mobile than Cousins. Lets see how we stop Persa this week - he's mobile I hear......+ a great passer.
  11. You forgot your sarcastic smiley. But I do agree with you 100% that NU should not settle for anything less, but...............as someone who's hoping for a MI loss I think at this point with NU still not quite at Bama/LSU level we need all the help we can to get back to the top so that we can start attracting blue chip 5* athletes. Without stud players we'll be a perennial 3-4 loss team I wanted to use the smiley but I was posting on my Droid and don't have that option so I laid it on extra thick. The way this thread was going I wanted to make sure nobody thought I was serious. Funny thing is I've never said I would rather not be in the CCG. I'll take anyway we need to get there BUT I would rather earn it on our own merits. I don't want the help until we need it and I don't feel we'll need it. We just have to take care of business which, for me for now, includes defeating a higher ranked Michigan. If we stumble, I'll change my tune but not until then. If it turns out to be too late then, I am confident that what I or anyone wants now has no bearing on what is going to happen anyway. So, I'm just livin the dream. I am just glad I am not so far gone to make statements like "dignity doesn't matter", "respect is overrated", "it's not the 90's anymore-get over it", "we'll never return to dominance" etc. If those are true, I would have to seriously evaluate why I watch college football and why I care about the Huskers. IMO, if we don't strive for excellence and national prominence then it is just a waste of time. Might as well just play checkers. Heck CSU is only about 20 miles from where I live. If I want my team to depend on help from a weak conference, I could try being a Rams fan. Something tells me that you and I are going to get a long real well on this BBS.....
  12. I like the level of football in the B12 but for everything else it's the B1G. Also, it just feels weird not knowing much about 1/2 these teams in the B1G. For instance, I never knew that WI had CU-like scum fans..... For all the talk about how Alvarez molded their program after NU's from copying our uni's right down to the style of football...... it's surprising.

  14. Would Jamal have scored if he had done the end-around? Hard to say. I don't believe Turner is that much faster than Marlowe, who is an under-appreciated burner. Jamal looks like a more fluid runner out there, but the DB had the angle on Marlowe and that's why he got caught (same thing happened to BK against the Gophers). Turner may have given the DB some shake-n-bake and scored, but Marlowe did his job getting it down to the 1 yard line. From there the rest of the team should have been able to punch it in. That's on the playcalling and execution, not Marlowe. Regardless, the "leading WR" on the team needs to be a lot more involved than just making cursory appearances.
  15. RIght..... but if we drop a game to either UM/PSU then it would be good for UM to have a loss! Seems to make a lot more sense than hoping NU runs the table
  16. I'm not convinced that our defense/offense has been fixed: The offense still relies on the big play... and if it's not there we struggle on short yardage. MSU played right into our hands (penalties, no running game, etc) and we lucked out. On defense we have not shown that we can stop a power running game. PSU will run and run some more. Their passing game is pedestrian but still they have a good WR who can made plays. Their def. is very good - better than MSU & OSU. So this game will be slug fest. If we destroy NW I'll sleep better.... if not..... I won't sleep at all.
  17. Guys - Can we just END this GOD DAMNED HuskerPedia GARBAGE? Really, it's done - the damn site (HP) is down and doesn't exist. I know there are A LOT of personal vendetta's (heck my MI/IA thread got hijacked by 2 punks) - but for crying out loud - enough is enough. MOVE ON Mods - please delete this sorry thread!
  18. That's the 1 game I'm already worried about. How NU does against Dennerd Robinson (mobile QB) will go a long way in telling us how we'll fare against Miller.
  19. We have mismanaged how we use the tFR (fab-3, Turner and Bell). We should have RS'd Turner & Green/Heard. You can see the frustration setting in with AGreen....... And next year with Rex back, IDK.... how they're going to get any more PT
  20. Winning games like WI - especially when they're in prime time with 1 million+ eyes watching. Same with games like the last 2 B12C's. It's the losses like those that media folks remember - not so much wins against teams like MSU. MSU is good but does not have brand name recognition. Quick how many times do people bring up Boise beating OU? Plain and simply NU has to get back to winning big games on the big stage. With that will come swag - true swag - not the manufactured variety that we hear about. And with that swag will come more big wins...... It's a nice vicious cycle that the 90's Huskers perfected and fed off.
  21. I have to admit, I feel a little sorry (in a demented sort of way ) for the buffies...... They bail out on the B12 (not that I really blame them).... fire a crappy coach, drink so much kool aid when they hire an ex-player HC that it takes them almost 7 games to realize that they SUCK even worse than the sucked with Hawk. That's the definition of double suckage. What's funny is to see all the excuses on netbuffs.com about how Embree is actually good but needs more talent. :laughpound . Isnt' that exactly what they said 6 years ago when they hired Hawk ? Clue: Someone needs to tell the buffies that they hired a worse HC than Hawk. How's that for hitting rock bottom? Coming to KS - well, I hate to say it but there's no way a BCS team puts up only 46 total yards against a crappy 2 loss tu team. None. Gill is just in over his head. Some people are just not cut out to be great HC's and I'd love to see Gill back at NU in some capacity as an assistant - just not an OC please! So.... which one of those 3 is the worst (sorry Iowa, this is not a dig at you )?
  22. Exactly! We are in a 3 team tie right now in the legends. Iowa is pretty much out of the pic, plus even if there were still in it I'm 100% sure that we kill them in Lincoln. MI on the road is a lot more daunting. I'd rather have a strong IA coming to Lincoln than NU going to play a strong MI on the road. Duh!
  23. Really? Has NU shown that we can stop a mobile QB? We don't need to impress anyone with wins against a "full strngth" MI team. Hell, the gauntlet of a schedule that we have this year is enough to impress. No need to go TO Ann Arbor against a MI team brimming with confidence. That's my point. Also, I'm not completely sold on our offense and defense. Sure we won against MSU but 0 yards passing at the 1/2 and the near inability to convert short yardage (3rd and <4) has me concerned. IDK ..... I still think we HAVE to pass the ball better and not go with this Jekyll/Hyde offense where guys like Turner, Reed and to a certain degree Bell (all 3 weapons) don't get more touches. I think MSU blew it with their stubborness not running it more against a NU def. that dared them to run. Makes absolutely NO sense. I doubt MI will do that against that Peso
