Okay, how is this for a vaild reason for not having any faith in Banker:
During Mike Riley's 1-15 season as the Chargers coach, Banker's defense took the the field 15 times with the Chargers holding the lead and three minutes or less on the clock...and lost 14 of those games.
Did anybody else but me see any of that same pattern last year?
Oh, and the Hank Hughes firing thing with our returning defensive line not returning leaves me wondering about the management.
Not defedning Banker with this. The concerns are legit. But the losses to BYU, Illinois, Northwestern, Wisconsin, and Iowa, I can put just as much blame on the offense, if not more, than the defense. In these games, the defense played plenty well enough to win the prior 58 minutes. Jesus. 13 points against Illinios? While the defense held them to 7 points for 59 minutes and 50 seconds? Give me a break. Wisconsin? We had the ball twice to start the 3rd qtr, with a 7 point lead, starting in Wisc territory both times, and got nothing. Lost on a last second field goal. We had chances to put BYU away. 2 missed field goals woulda rendered that hail mary irrelevant. Defense played well enough to win against Iowa.
At some point you have to score points. Ask Suh. Cuz at some point youre gonna crack. you can completely shut a team down forever. To put the blame for these last second losses mostly on Banker and the defense is ridiculous. It's shows a total lack of understanding of the game and the process of events that lead to an end.
I mean ... I get what you're saying. And you're not necessarily wrong.
But trying to argue that our offense has issues on the same level as our #122 ranked pass defense isn't exactly comforting.
Kind of agree with Mav here. Banker failed to realize what he had on his line and adjust in many games BYU was just the first glimpse of that.
What was he supposed to adjust?
Not run almost exclusively man-to-man coverage most of the time.
