  1. Not necessarily. But training certainly helps. Do you think it reasonable for someone working full time at a multi-million dollar company to expect to get a livable wage? Do you think that someone working TWO full time jobs should live in what could only be described as poverty? McDonald's made about $1.3 billion last year. http://www.nytimes.c...n-expected.html Their CEO made $8.5 million. http://www.bloomberg...ws-pay-gap.html A full time McDonald's employee makes $13,000 a year after taxes. $1.3 billion divided by 1.7 million employees = $764 extra per employee per year if McDonald's breaks even. That extra $14 a week should fix all the employees financial problems. The CEO should donate his entire salary to the employees too. That would be a whole $5 per employee per year or 9 cents a week. But hey, don't let mathematics ruin your illusion of the evil corporate monster.
  2. Exactly F1 racer - Crouch Funny Car - TMart Yep, give me Crouch through the line of scrimmage and then Taylor down field once the moves have been made.
  3. Should probably give the murderers a tryout in the NFL.
  4. The local people and possibly even the land owner themselves usually get benefit from the other utilities. Very few people in the entire United States will get a benefit from this pipe line. and how exactly do they benefit when the same oil is rolling down the railroad instead? More noise, stopped traffic and diesel exhaust to breath?
  5. At least they didn't finish the game with his head.
  6. Wall Street Journal Mach 2013 That is saying that US oil companies will be exporting the refined products, not Canada. It think it is total BS that they would export it when we have a shortage in the Midwest when it comes to refined fuels. The part of this whole thing that really made me start scratching my head was the question of looking at the logistics of all of this. Let's say the oil is going to be used in the US. To me, it would make more sense to build refineries in North Dakota where we are seeing an oil boom. The oil then can be distributed to areas in the US where it is needed. The way this is being proposed (if it's not going to be exported) they are going to build a pipe line across thousands of people's land to the farthest point in the US south from where the oil is being pumped. THEN, it will be transported across the US (much of it back north) to be used. Logistically it makes no sense.....unless it's being exported. Pretty hard to export from a refinery in ND. You would probably have better luck getting a permit to build a nuke plant on 27th and O.

  8. Both. Look, I have no idea if there is going to be a leak or not. But, for conversational purposes, lets say there isn't one. The pipe line is still a pain in the azz for anyone who owns the property around it. I have been on enough construction jobs that are close to pipe lines to know that it's a pain in the azz and the pipe line company controls EVERYTHING. I actually have a friend who owns a construction company. he went over and helped his neighbor drill a few fence post holes. These post holes just so happened to be too close to a pipe line and the plane flew over checking the pipe line as he was digging. Last I knew, he was still in the middle of fighting a law suit that he could end up with a huge fine. This is just one example of many. All this and we don't get any benefit from it other than "a few" jobs. This oil IS going to be exported and not used in the US. I thought that was a well known fact by now. I work for a pipeline company and will agree that we can be a pain to work with, especially when it comes to digging around our lines. I take it the guy never called in to diggers hotline before he dug his posts. That is the one thing that will get you in trouble more then anything else. We had a farmer in Iowa not call into diggers hotline and proceeded to hit one of our lines. The damages from the release exceeded more then what his farm was worth and it got taken by the courts in the lawsuit. As far as the oil being shipped over seas, I have not seen anything on it, just speculation. Thanks for making my point. Let's say you are a rancher in the Sandhills. What benefit do you get from having this pipeline across your land. BUT....once it is there, you have all the risk if someone digs without having it located AND you have the pain in the azz of having to deal with having it located. Yes...I know it's a phone call and it's free. But, it's still something you have to deal with if you simply are going to go fix some fence in the middle of the pasture with absolutely no benefit to you. As for my friend, he was helping a neighbor. He thought the neighbor called but he didn't. BUT.....because he was the actual one digging, he is in trouble. First off, if you are a Sandhills rancher, you don't have to worry about the pipeline since it has rightfully so been rerouted around the Sandhills. Either you used a poor example or might want to catch up on what is actually going on. If you want to argue it will be a hassle to the land owners for the current propose route, it will make little difference since it is already required by law that you call diggers hotline before you dig. There are already natural gas, gas, phone, fiber optic lines, etc already crisscrossing the entire proposed route. Cut a fiber optic line and the starting repair costs are around $30K. You can't even dig a mailbox post with out calling and rightfully so. Many towns have wires that power street lights paralleling the streets only a couple of feet in the ground about the exact distance from the street where you need to dig the post. So to say that having to call the diggers hotline is a hassle is simply ignorance of what the hell is actually going on. As for your friend, it sounds like he is getting exactly what he deserves. If it doesn't like it, he would probably be better off finding a different occupation maybe one with less responsibility. If you are worried that it is something that doesn't benefit the US then I suggest reading up some more. Here is a good article from Time. http://science.time.com/2012/03/08/0-44-million-barrels-per-day/ "marking the first time since 1949 that the country exported more petroleum products than it imported" Sounds like to me you and your liberal friends want a lot of other pipelines, refineries and jobs shut down. As for the jobs, I agree it isn't that big of a deal. If you wanted to maximize the jobs out of it then stop the pipeline and haul it by rail since that is the more inefficient way to do it and will require a larger workforce. Of course its also the more dangerous method and worse for the environment. Finally if you think stopping the pipeline is going to stop the oil from coming through Nebraska, well then we probably shouldn't even be having this discussion in the first place as we are both wasting our time.
  9. http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/07/world/americas/canada-runaway-train/index.html?hpt=hp_c2 Death toll up to 5 now with 40 still missing. There are a lot of towns in Nebraska that the BNSF route splits right in half when Warren starts shipping the oil via rail if they stop the pipeline. Fun times ahead for Nebraska. Leave it to the environmentalists to force the oil companies to chose the more dangerous method of transportation that is also worse for the environment. Well done Jane.
  10. http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/06/world/americas/canada-train-derailment-fire/index.html?hpt=hp_t2 "At least one person died and others were reported missing" Pretty sure no pipelines killed anyone today but I guess there is still time. "The radio station said that the oil shipment was on its way to the United States." Maybe next time we can be so fortunate that the train at least makes it to the US before it derails.
  11. http://www.foxnews.com/world/2013/07/06/train-carrying-crude-oil-derails-in-quebec/?test=latestnews and this is exactly why we need to stop the pipeline because when the train derails and explodes there will be much less to clean up since it will all burn up in the inferno. Much easier then then cleaning it up off the ground.
  12. I guess somebody finally read the damned thing.

  14. The good news is the WNBA season is just getting started!
  15. Seeing how bad the alternate uniforms were last year and how well they sold, they won't be able to keep this years alternate uniforms in stock. If nothing else, it's a brilliant marketing move.
  16. In related news, Nebraska will be wearing their practice jerseys for the UCLA game.
  17. Holiday is a great get and a real kick in the sack to the Big 12 losing that. Not sure why people don't like the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl? San Fran is another quality travel destination for fans. I could think of much worse places to end up for the bowl season. Well done Delany.
  18. Being left of right-leaning people puts you in one of two categories: Centrist or Left. I'm a Centrist. Not every person who's political leanings are left of Right-wingers are Liberals. Doesn't matter if you mean it derogatorily or not (I don't take it as an insult, just an annoying wrong), it's a mode of thinking that is prevalent in this country, but counterproductive to getting us out of this mess. Actually I'm a centrist and you are left of me by a mile, so what does that make you?
  19. You'll have to convince someone else of that. It's not my fault that those who disagree with my views are often far right. To someone far to the right, everyone is left of them, or "liberal," if that's the word you choose. You can think of me how you wish. I know what I am. A centrist Moderate, and I always have been. Even you admit it's often well-deserved. And if it's a problem for me to debunk the Birthers, the "He's taking our guns!!!!" nutters, the "death panel" nutters (Sarah Palin, Hello!), the "Obama is a Socialist" nutters, the "Obama's Economy" nonsense, the "Obama is a Muslim" nutters, the worst of the Obamacare nonsense and other tinfoil hat theories, then go ahead and label me a "liberal" if that floats your boat. Me, I'd rather have reasonable discourse than talk about fringe garbage like that, but hey - I'm a whackjob leftist liberal, so what do I know? Amirite? EDIT... BTW - do you know why there aren't any threads where I'm going on and on denouncing people like Olbermann and the other MSNBC hacks? Because nobody here defends the far left. Nobody. Nobody thinks they're right, nobody believes in their politics, nobody digs in their heels and supports them. We have lengthy threads about the far right because there is a large contingent of folks here on HuskerBoard who staunchly defend every utterance the far right comes out with. If people stopped defending the Palins of the world, there'd be fewer threads about them. The people defending her or no worse then the people like you who continually give her the attention she craves. If it wasn't for you this thread would have lasted about 3 posts and lost in oblivion.
  20. I know a guy whose grandfather came to Nebraska in the early 1900's from Mexico. Yes he is Hispanic and looks Hispanic but wouldn't know a word of Spanish anymore then someone would know German whose family came from there a hundred years ago. He will have other Hispanics come up to him and start rattling off to him in Spanish all the time and he has to reply "Dude I have no idea what you are saying" and they get pissed at him because he doesn't know Spanish as if he has insulted other Hispanics because over time his family has integrated themselves English speaking Americans.
  21. Apparently some people live very sheltered lives.
  22. Why would you want to. I bought a piece of the turf back in the day that we went like 80-3 on. Now that was worth buying. I'd take about 50' by 50' for my back yard if they are just throwing it away.
  23. I'd like to see the senate have two six year terms and the house two four year terms. The house is pretty much a never ending campaign. What, so they have longer to get less done? How is that longer vs lifetime? Confused. Longer meaning, this allows them more time to get less done... Being a Senator since 1985 allows you more time to get less done vs a twelve year term limit.
