  1. A farmer outside of Boulder was working his cattle one day when he heard faint music coming from nearby. After hunting about for a time, he discovered the sound was loudest near one particular calf, and was even louder near the calf's tail. Putting his head close to the calf's hind end, he heard the University of Colorado's fight song Amazed, he put the calf in the truck and drove the animal to a vet in Boulder. When the vet asked him what was going on, the farmer told him. The vet went around behind the calf and gave a listen. He casually agreed he heard the University of Colorado's fight song but didn't seem particularly excited. "Man, this is unbelievable! How can you stand there and not be amazed?" the farmer asked. The vet, a third generation University of Nebraska graduate, said, "Hell, Bud, I'm a Cornhusker and I've been listening to a$$hole$ sing that song my whole life."
  2. There's a party in Nebraska Panhandle after Chadron upsets Montana St. By ERIC OLSON, AP Sports Writer September 10, 2006 OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- The party has moved from Bozeman, Mont., to Chadron, Neb. Division II Chadron State made Montana State's worst fear a reality Saturday when the Eagles stunned the Bobcats 35-24 on the road. ADVERTISEMENT A week ago, I-AA Montana State was celebrating a 19-10 victory over defending Big 12 North champion Colorado that created a buzz throughout college football. "Everyone is saying they want Colorado to beat the Huskers, and then we would be the best team in Nebraska," Chadron quarterback Joe McLain said Sunday. The Eagles victory is being called the program's biggest since they beat Colorado -- those guys again -- 3-0 in 1925. Coach Bill O'Boyle said he won't be asking athletic director Brad Smith to line up a game against the Buffaloes. "Not unless Brad has about 70 full scholarships in his back pocket," O'Boyle said. The Eagles have just 21 scholarships -- 15 under the Division II maximum -- while Montana State has the I-AA limit of 63. O'Boyle said he reminded his players that few, if any, of them were recruited by Division I schools. "I told them (Montana State) didn't think you even deserve to be on this field," O'Boyle said. "I said, 'Nobody looked at you guys. You're all too small. You're all too slow.' Division II gets that knock. But I tell you what: I'd take these guys against anybody." Size didn't matter on Saturday. Danny Woodhead rushed for 215 yards and Montana State committed five turnovers. The Eagles led 14-0 after five minutes and never trailed. "We know our abilities, and we felt we could play with them," Woodhead said. "I don't think we were scared like some Division IIs might be. We just went out there and we believed we could win." Montana State finished with 460 yards, 101 more than the Eagles, but Chadron State held a 13-minute advantage in time of possession. "We got down a couple of scores and we were stunned," said Bobcats quarterback Cory Carpenter, who won national I-AA Player of the Week after the Colorado victory. "We just couldn't get our feet back on the ground. We couldn't get that rhythm." And now there is pandemonium in the Nebraska Panhandle. O'Boyle took some heat from locals this summer for canceling a home game against Black Hills State (S.D.) to play Montana State. Chadron's $40,000 guarantee from MSU was used to buy new uniforms. No one was mad at O'Boyle after Saturday. Many Chadron residents watched the game at a local bar where a television feed was available. A handful of people showed up to meet the team bus when it rolled into town about 3:45 a.m. MDT. At the end of Sunday Mass at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Rev. Ed Courtney congratulated O'Boyle and eight players in attendance. They received applause when Courtney asked them to stand. Next up for Chadron is Division II Wayne State (Neb.). Woodhead said he knows what the Wayne State players will be saying if they beat Chadron, that they're better than Colorado. "We're a marked team," Woodhead said.
