They had a great bounce-back year, and did a really good job.  They might have lost some games that they want back, but......  it's baseball.

I don't know what they say in Omaha or in Lincoln, and Bolt did feel a warm seat going into the year...... But, if anyone questions the success of this season (and during the year) I think it's for one reason only:  Majority of Husker fans cannot handle their favorite team losing a game at anything.  And this includes baseball (one of the big 3 sports - unless you add track and field as #4).  This is why Husker fans gravitate towards Womens Volleyball - because they win a lot every year.  Husker fans happy when Huskers win at anything - but then b!^@h and complain and gripe when Husker team loses. It's like some sort of sport fandom pyschosomatic thing.  Just my observation over the years.

For what it's worth, I completely agree with you. It all stems back to football spoiling everyone for so many years. It's hard for me to get too worked up this year outside of a few spots--dropping the midweek games to Omaha/NDSU/SDSU were really bad spots and the team looked so flat. They also dropped a couple games early to San Diego were they had the games well in hand and gave it away. I'd love to see this team make some noise in the conference tourney and see what happens. I was rooting so hard for Michigan State yesterday haha.

I tell you what though, you want to see something crazy, check out LSU's Baseball twitter these few games. That fanbase is UNHINGED lol.

Yes, there's loads of talk about Bolt. I am overly critical of not just Bolt but every men's revenue sport in the athletic department. Fans are seeing Bolt grow as a manager some which brings hope. He finally started playing to win by manufacturing runs instead of living on the long ball. My hope is, this continues to be seen this to end the season. (Maybe the Childress affect?)

As for a comparison between the men's & women's seasonal successes (fall, winter, spring sports) it's no even close. The Lady Huskers are winners. Volleyball (post season play), Basketball (post season play), Softball (post season play)... The men however Football (can't make a bowl game), Basketball (can't make the nit let alone win a game in March madness) bringing us to baseball. Sure, we played in the post season 2 years ago but once every 4 years is not acceptable. The men's department in it's current condition with all the amenities the fans continue to pay for remains a disgrace.

Seriously,  the Ladies programs are carrying the entire weight of the husker brand as these selfish men rake in the profits while performing subpar. The fans deserve more. So too does the conference. Our men's programs are the laughing stock of the B1G. That's the truth and has been the truth for years! Heck, we can't even beat the worst team in the B1G on a neutral field in football.

I don't follow this enough to know. Was there a common theme with pitching in those games?  Was he saving his better pitching for the weekend and throwing someone not as good out during the week?

Midweek games are always a bit of a crapshoot since it's pretty rare that you're going to have good #4 starter on a college team. From a quick look at the game logs from those midweek games. It seems like Nebraska just tried to 'bullpen' the games and have all their guys throw a couple innings at a time. I think they were hoping that Garza would take ownership of one of their rotation slots but he was a disaster and Walsh...who was the midweek guy got bumped to the 3 spot. It also hasn't helped that Bunz took a huge step back, Cristo hasn't really developed and they lost Bragg. I would've liked to see them try and stretch a couple guys out but it seemed like nobody really grabbed the brass ring. I can't speak to what Nebraska's development part is like and if that was the goal this year with having lots of guys get innings.

I get that baseball is a weird sport and flukey stuff happens all the time but consistently dropping games to Omaha and the Dakota schools is really bad. Those teams are flat out not good.

@Loebarthhas mentioned the teams lack of focus quite a bit and I certainly agree with him that during the midweek games against 'lesser' opponents, this team seems to think they can just roll the gloves out if you will and win games. This team is just not talented enough to do that as presently constructed. I don't know what next year holds for Bolt but they are going to lose 3 big pieces in Brice, Max and Shay and I don't know how they are going to fill those spots.

If the season ended today they'd be the 4 seed.

I think that is perfect because they'd get to "prove" to the committee they deserve a post season invite by having to first beat the 1 seed (already in the field of 64) then also win against either the 2 seed (also in the field already) or the 3 seed (redemption for an absolute lackluster affair 3 weeks ago). Hopefully the alignment doesn't change and the sker's are the 4 seed. Still have 2 more games to play and this team doesn't seem to be able to stay focused on anything for any duration so... fingers crossed that lady luck is on our side.

    edit:

also, their first game would be against the 4th big ten team that D1 shows as a qualifier. So, in simple terms.. they'd play all teams projected in the field

I think we're all on the same page here in that the only way Nebraska gets in to regionals is if they win the conference tournament. I don't think I'm going out on a limb here when I say that they have zero shot of regional play otherwise.

IIRC, I think the Big Ten moved to the CWS style 2 bracket system. So you'd have the 1/8/4/5 seeds in one bracket and 2/7/3/6 in the other.

The lack of success in men's sports at Nebraska, while at the same time having much better success in women's sports, is mind blowing.

I get the reasoning why we aren't as competitive against warm weather and southern schools.  The really good players want to go somewhere where they can play year round and play home games right from the start of the season.

But.....there's no reason why we shouldn't be winning the majority of games against teams like NDSU, SDSU, UNO and Creighton....and throw in that we should be a top team in the Big Ten.

The lack of midweek success this year against those teams you mentioned has really stood out to me. The team generally plays well in conference and competes against P5 schools. I really appreciate that Nebraska plays Omaha and Creighton a couple times a year and I hope that trend continues because it's great from a local standpoint. That being said, you have to wonder if it makes sense to play both teams 2x/year versus swapping in a home and away against a team like Mizzou, KU or some other geographically close-ish P5 school that can help boost up the RPI a bit. It certainly doesn't help that San Diego and South Alabama aren't very good this year.

  6. Hey @Loebarth(or anyone else) do you happen to remember why Braxton Bragg ended up transferring? It seems a tad odd that he couldn't find a spot in the starting rotation at Nebraska yet he's the Saturday guy at Dallas Baptist..a perennial baseball powerhouse.

Likely a rainout today resulting in a Doubleheader tomorrow. Sadly, puts more pressure on winning game 1. Jace in game 1 maybe? Then a bullpen game 2 and Sunday?

If the game gets rained out why would that affect the pitching rotation? Nebraska was planning on throwing Olson in game 1 and Kaminska in game 2. Olson will start game 1 whether that happens today or tomorrow. Now, it would definitely be not ideal if they play say, 3 innings tonight and get rained out until tomorrow thus knocking out Olson.

The "if" you left out is "if" they earn a spot. Watch, watch this team lose both remaining series not because they're not the better team but rather because they don't care. The effort won't be there this weekend and they're on the road next weekend. Maybe they'll play with a little more emotion against Purdue considering the lack of sportsmanship displayed to the huskers by Purdue last year but the lack of leadership displayed lately makes me think we win only the saturday game against purdue and finally the season of hope ends.

So you think they are going to get swept at home by Penn State? If so, let me know if you would be interested in a friendly side wager!

    All bets are off???

This team hasn't shown they have the desire to win. As for fans showing up, I wouldn't bet on that. (Especially if our first game is early) Truthfully,  why should we? Why should we support a team that doesn't want to win?

Why pay inflated costs at the ballpark, inflated ticket costs, have you purchased a beer at a sporting event lately? Gas prices sky rocketing, groceries over priced, inflation out of control and nearly 75% of the nation living paycheck to paycheck. Why should any of us support these entitled, self centered, selfish, privileged pretenders?

It's not the coaches that are the issue. Pelini won here and was fired. Erstad won here and mostly left because the administration or lack there of.. Danny Nee won here, also fired? Our fans deserve more. They deserve more from the players, from the staffs, from the athletic department personnel and the university pencilneck board of regents. That won't happen until the fan base stops participating.

This athletic department has, is and continues being the laughing stock of power 5 schools. I mean heck we've to this date never won a March madness game. We can't qualify for a post season bowl game when 84% of all teams do. This school has the luxury of a never ending cash cow fan base and yet for reasons that are a mockery this university can't field a single post season team. This university should be ashamed to call themselves competitive because they know and every school they face off against knows they aren't.

Buddy, if you don't think Nebraska will draw 8k+ for a conference baseball tourney game in Omaha after missing the tourney last year, I don't know what to tell you. The Creighton/Nebraska game on Tuesday drew 5k just as a reference point.

  10. Despite the team sputtering, I think they only need to win 3 of their last 6 games to lock up a top 8 finish and guarantee a spot in the conference tourney. If they can make it to Omaha, all best are off as the fans will come out in droves to support the team. If they can't get 3 wins from a putrid Penn State team and Purdue, they don't deserve to make it to Omaha. Penn State is legitimately awful on the road...2-12 and one of those was the first game of the year at Miami FL.

Article on flowrestling states Van Dee going to 133. Everything else is what we have discussed. No mention of Condimetti which is a little concerning.

I can't remember where I read this (and honestly you might have been the person who mentioned it) but Condimetti apparently has had a nasty run of concussions which has affected his availability.

It's a lot more common with the Covid year, gotta weigh any potential improvements against being a year older and it's unlikely you improve drastically after 4 years of playing. I'm sure there are teams telling kids they have a 6th round grade on them etc, but a lot of them know there's a good chance they go undrafted. You're right it's very easy to say it now that he wasn't drafted, but it's not that surprising to most people and I don't think it was surprising to Nelson. Disappointing sure, surprising no.

Even if you don't make the 53 man roster, you can still make $11k/week as a NFL practice squad player. If Nelson can make a practice squad (which I think is very reasonable) and stick for the season, he'll make a shade above $200k. Now, I have zero idea what Nebraska's NIL situation looks like but I'm guessing (and probably wrong) that while he's leaving some financial security on the table at Nebraska, I doubt he was walking away from a $500k bag or anything like that. If I had to speculate, his NIL package was probably close to what he could make on a practice squad and Nelson elected to bet on himself versus coming back for another year. As others have mentioned, Nelson went out on a high note and even though we think he would've been a contributor there is no guarantee he would thrive in this new system.

Will do !  I know they made regional last season and now it looks like they are building on it.  This year they are smashing it !!!!

People don't realize that Wake is in North Carolina (athletes and loads of talent) and it's a beautiful campus.

I cannot wait for them to make it the CWS in Omaha - they on the right track for sure

I hope they can make it to the CWS this year too and while short series baseball is always unpredictable, I'd be pretty surprised if they didn't make it. Unless something unforeseen happens, they are a lock for a top 4 national seed.
