I guess Illinois defense has awakened

As I said earlier, we are going to rush for 400 yards today. It would be nice for our defense to wake up now.

Neither team has been able to stop the run yet so keep running. Why aren’t they using Ozigbo?

Our unspecial teams continue to shine

This is not going to be as easy as I expected. Our defense is playing like Swiss cheese.

If we play like we did against Ohio state and our unspecial teams produce an average game and do not do anything negative, I say we win all three games. The one game that worries me is Iowa. I think it will be a very hard fought battle especially if we win our next two games and the Iowa game is what stands between us and going to a bowl game.

As to you our unspecial teams play, people say that there has been improvement yet every announcer on TV including our head coach said that our special teams play needs to improve significantly. So, how can you actually believe that we have improved is a mystery to me. The last game showed that we declined if anything.

I honestly do not mind people not agreeing with my opinion. That is what the board is for, some people might agree and some people might disagree. However, expressing your thoughts is much better than hiding behind a stupid emoji that means absolutely nothing. It is just a lazy way of being annoying. If it were up to me, I would limit them to either agree or disagree and eliminate emojis that mean nothing. I also think that showing the screen name of the person who leaves the emoji will eliminate the problem. A lot of posters will be hesitant to leave meaningless emojis if the6 knew that their screen name is associated with those emojis.

I do not think I am poking holes in my arguments. I have seen improvements on offense and defense but absolutely no improvements on special teams. Special teams use some of the same players that play on offense and defense. So, the only reason why the players are not executing well is because they are not coached well. Explain to me why don’t we ever go after a punt? Why do we fair catch over 90% of the time. We do we fail to flip the field on our opponents regularly. Why did we get one of our punts blocked today? Again, I am not saying fire this coach. I am against firing coaches after one year. However, let him focus on OLB and hire someone who is known to be an excellent special teams coach. We obviously need to improve in this facet of the game so we can win close games. Why do do you think Scott Frost opted not to go for on onside kick with 2:57 left in the Game? I am sure he has zero confidence in his special teams.

Without a good coach to coach the players, we must rely on very talented players that need little coaching. Since our unspecial teams coach does not seem to be coaching the players to go out there and do something positive then the only alternative is to get players that have an instinct for special plays. From your posts, you seem to think that the unspecial teams coach is doing the best he can with these players, right? I am sure there are many excellent special teams coaches out there. We just need to hire one that can help our players in this phase of the game. What we currently have is not working and trying to convince me that this is the best we can do is simply a joke. Just like the joke that Moiraine is trying to pull. Unfortunately, both jokes are not funny but actually sad.

The only time we had success on special teams is when we have JD Spielman returning punts and most of the time, I am sure he is being asked to fair catch the ball. Our players never attempt to go after a punt to block it. They never try to block a field kick either. Our punts are horrible most of the time. We used to have some of the best kickers and punters in the country. I am hoping that we can recruit some talent in that area or we will continue to struggle in that phase of the game. Lightbourn will not magically get better. He has been with this team for three years now.

Personnel changes mean nothing if it is the same exact coach coaching them. The issue is the coach not being knowledgeable in special teams play and not the players.

Our unspecial teams simply do the absolute minimum not to make a mistake and they still make mistakes. I saw six teams today block a punt yet we never even try. Most of the time we signal fair catch and most of the time we let the ball roll to our five yard line. We had horrible starting field positions yet Ohio state had wonderful field position most of the game.

Well...whatever we are doing now is not working either. In fact, today, our special teams cost us a very important win. Doing the same exact thing and expecting a different result is not very smart.

I agree, we do not need to fire that coach but hire a capable one for the special teams alone.

We need a good knowledgeable coach for that phase of the game. Having one coach split duties is not working out as seen all season long. The offense and defense continue to improve whereas the unspecial teams continue to cost us games. It is time to find a good special teams coach and have them focus on that aspect of our team.

That does not make him a good special teams coach.

In fact, whoever is hiding behind the emojis are cowards and have been cowards all their lives. Prove me wrong and tell me who you are...COWARD(s).
