  1. #9Wins&BeNice #Nine&Nice Nine wins... UNRANKED in the BCS (the only poll that matters) No one else is impressed with our nine wins.
  2. In addition to the players we lost to the NFL and graduation last year... This year we loose: Jordan Westerkamp Alonzo Moore Brandon Reilly Tommy Armstrong Terrell Newby Cethan Carter Sam Cotton Dylan Utter Kevin Maurice Michael Rose-Ivey Nathan Gerry Josh Banderas what are you talking about? 2014 wasn't Riley's class at all and the 2015 class was started by Bo and wrapped up by Riley so I wouldn't say that is a Riley class. Last year was Riley's first full class and with the addition of D Williams I think Riley's second full class may end up being one of the best we have had in a long time. No evidence to back that up at this point but things are looking up right now for the class of 17 In addition to the players we lost to the NFL and graduation last year... My comment is not a comparison between coaches... it's about the drop off in athletic talent we have on the team going forward. So I edited-eliminated the coaches names from my original comment. We had a lot of talent on the team the last 2 years... a result of the 2012 and 2013 recruiting classes. Not so much going forward.

  4. This years team (2016) and last years team (2015) was comprised mostly of players from the 2012 and 2013 recruiting classes. 2012: Recruiting class rank 30th - Number of elite athletes - 8 2013: Recruiting class ranking 22nd - Number of elite athletes - 7 Total number of elite athletes (4 or 5 star athletes) from 2012 and 2013 recruiting classes - 15 The next two years teams (2017 and 2018) will be made up of mostly players from recruiting classes from 2014 and 2015. 2014: Recruiting class rank 36th - Number of elite athletes - 2 2015: Recruiting class rank 30th - Number of elite athletes - 4 Total number of elite athletes from 2014 and 2015 recruiting classes - 6 That's a 60% drop in elite talent over the respective 2 year periods. Things are going to get much more difficult going forward for Nebraska.
  5. How many people here said "Drunk drivers have a right to kill other people."?...Who said, "Sports is more important than people's lives?"... As for what drunk drivers / alcoholics are like, I have met one or two down at the Rescue Mission over the years and grew up with some, so I'm going to say I really do know what havoc they can wreak on the rest of us. So my opinion on fixing instead of tossing isn't based on any ignorance of the seriousness of the matter. It's based on what I have seen happen or not happen in a lot (a whole lot) of scenarios playing out. Firing Williams won't sober him up. Neither will keeping him as a coach. However, the University has more resources for trying to help Williams help himself with his problem(s) than is currently offered in the unemployment line, and I would rather see someone made better than punished. Mind you, it's an iffy proposition, but I would rather err on the side of doing too much than too little. It's almost unbearable to think about but my mother was killed by a drunk driver. So no you don't know what havoc they can wreck on the rest of us. As for your misplaced compassion for the drunk driver. Where is your compassion for the victims of drunk drivers ? Where is that at ? The only person who can "fix" an alcoholic is the alcoholic themselves. The University of Nebraska does NOT have more resources than are available elsewhere. Every alcoholic has available 24/7/365, all the resources they need available to help them help themselves, in AA and other agencies. I'ts up to them to seek out the resources... it's not up the society to baby sit them. Doing too much rather than too little... are you kidding me? Society has already done too much for this person. We've given him multiple chances and he has thumbed his nose at the rest of the world. It's his responsibility to rescue himself. It's not our responsibility to baby sit or coddle this person. Our responsibility is to the rest of society... and to make sure as best we can to protect them from being victims.
  6. A person with a drinking problem... and who chooses to drive drunk... selfishly putting the public at risk of death and injury... is NOT THE VICTIM ! Innocent people who are killed by drunk drivers are the victims. Estimates are that 1Million 250 Thousand people or more have been killed by drunk drivers in the last 50 years. And many millions more have been permanently injured and maimed by drunk drivers. This is crazy. Rational people have decided enough is enough. This is an insult and an affront to the people of our country. You want an alcoholic to TELL YOU what they need to get themselves fixed? You don't understand the problem at all. The only person who can cure an alcoholic is the alcoholic themselves. No one can do that for them. It is their own personal responsibility to help themselves. Someone who has had three offences with drunk driving has no intentions of helping themselves. They had a second chance and a third chance and now a forth chance. They would have been given all the support they needed to help themselves along the way. Enough is enough. Drunk driving laws are what they are exactly because of people like this. Too many people here have their priorities completely mixed up and as$ backwards. Coach Williams is NOT THE VICTIM. Innocent people who's lives are at risk because of drunk drivers are the victims. Being a sports fan does not mean that you have to loose all rational thinking about your fellow citizens. Sports is not more important than peoples lives. Drunk drivers have no right to kill other people. 71 people are killed every day in alcohol related accidents. 1 person dies every 20 minutes in an alcohol related car crash.
  7. Kicking a man while he's down shows a lot about someones character Shut up dude. As a person who has lost friends AND family to people who have driven drunk. I don't give a rip about someone who chooses to drive drunk. I have no sympathy for a guy sitting in the slammer for driving intoxicated and getting into a wreck. Call me out all you want. I'm glad your here to bring some sense to all of this.
  8. Statistics show that 250,000 human beings die every ten years from alcohol realated accidents. That's 1 million 250,000 in the last 50 years ... 500 people are killed each week... 71 people each day... one life lost every 20 minutes... mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, children, loved ones and friends. And that's not accounting for the millions of people who have been injured and maimed for life. Rational human beings know that has to stop. With the implementation of tougher drunk driving laws... the numbers have been cut in half. Unfortunately older Americans with previous drunk driving arrests seem to be incapable of stopping. Repeat offenders are a major problem. The public and innocent victims have to be protected. This is a very serious problem... not anything to play word games or racism games with. Like too many these days you seem to have little to no compassion for your fellow human beings. This guy didn't do this once or twice but three times. That has to stop.
  9. When your job involves being a public ambassador, an educator, and a mentor to young men, it's a different scenario and our football program can not in any way endorse this wreckless behavior or send a message that we disapprove, but we're not going to make you suffer any consequences. Fair enough. I guess there is still some gray in it for me based on not knowing the entire story. I don't doubt Riley will do right by Williams and the team. Do we know how long ago the other 2 DUIs were? Also, what ended up happening with the USC coach that had similar issues this year? He was fired.
  10. How does he recruit if he cant drive ? Too many lives lost. The public and innocent victims need to be protected.
  11. His accuracy doesn't change, but if the emphasis is on running the ball you don't need as much accuracy. Tommie Frazier's career completion percentage was 49.5. Scott Frost 53.5, Crouch 51.5, Gill 54.0. Great stats MD3... That their completion percentages were that low is a true testament to what great-legendary running teams Osborne fielded. Because our current quarterback has percentages very similar to that...and considering what happened last year... hopefully our current coaches have taken notice of that and will adjust the offence accordingly. It's going to be an interesting year.
  12. Probably an accurate assessment. But it is debateable. 1. Decision making. While Frazier didnt throw a lot of passes, and didnt appear to be the most fluent passer, his TD to Int ratios were astounding. So even though his passing skill might not be as good as Armstrong, It would take some convincing to put Frazier behind Armstrong in this offense even. Not to mention, tendancy to run. Armstrong has shown pretty glaring tentativeness in simply running the ball on scramble situations. But in the end, it all boils down to how a coach would use each. I personally think Armstrong should be used more like Frazier. A thumper. The guy is 6-1, 220. That's LP/Green size. Run him more. Hell, as of right now, he could be the best running back on the team for all we know. We were such a rushing powerhouse in the 90s and our play action was so good that the 15 times a game we decided to pass, we could usually get a running back, tight end or wide receiver wide open in a low-risk zone. Decision making and accuracy weren't at such a high premium. Nebraska QBs almost never looked off a receiver (except on those designed screens in the flat) or checked through progressions or threw timing patterns in the end zone, and rarely had to thread the needle on crossing patterns. The play was designed to hit one wide-open receiver -- or tuck and run. Tommie was better at it than Scott Frost, who could hit wide open receivers but not always in stride. I agree with that. Our receivers would be so wide open it was unreal.
  13. I think a lot of us may have just overlooked both quarterbacks passing flaws in their early careers simply because they were new players. We didn't have a lot of replays to look at... yet. We got excited by their newness and by the things they did well... IE, Martinez ability to take off running when pass plays broke down. As they got older we had a lot more examples of what they were doing. Plus both players throwing problems were made even more evident by the fact that more emphasis was put on their throwing by the coaches. Martinez because he was hurt... and they didn't want him running as much... Armstrong last year because he was simply passing more because of the new offence concept. When players are young and full of promise... it's easy to overlook some things. If we do see it, we assume those things will get fixed. That doesn't always happen. I agree... that to a degree... I believe to a large degree... it's the responsibility of the coaching staffs to recognize player strengths and weakness and put all players in a position to succeed by emphasizing their strengths and minimizing play where their weakness can hurt us. Both players are who they are. They both played their hearts out for us.
  14. No, he is not accurate. The things you mentioned are problems that make him an inaccurate thrower. His mechanics are so poor that it's basically impossible for him to be a consistent thrower. To me, there are two parts to accuracy. Most of it can be gauged by completion percentage. It's not a perfect gauge but over time it gives you a pretty good idea. The other part of it is throwing the ball where it needs to be to protect receivers and allow them to make a bigger play after the catch. For those who want to point to receiver drops (which happen to all QBs, not just those who complete 55% of their passes) I would point to the MSU game last year (amongst others) where Westerkamp not only bailed TA out on several occasions by catching poorly thrown balls but also took several huge hits because he had to leave himself completely vulnerable to be able to make the catch. He bailed TA out of throwing a poorly accurate ball with some great plays. Great thread starter... very interesting subject. Leach is 100% correct... it's a natural talent that very few people possess. Accuracy is the ability to throw or hit or shoot something to a very small place in space (target). Very few people have the ability to do that. Throwing a football to a receiver in exactly the right spot (target) is complicated by the fact that the receiver is often moving and being defended. The quarterback not only has to throw to a very small target but often has to "lead" the receiver so they can run under or into the target point. In order to do that it takes a very rare combination of perfect body mechanics... a mind that has the natural ability to figure out coordinates (location of target) in space... and eyes that can see and focus on those coordinates (target), without loosing focus... as pass rushers are coming at you, or in your face... with the intention of body slaming you to the ground. LOL Leach is a very smart guy. Thanks again for sharing that video.
  15. Gates... Farmer... Foster... are all from the 2014 recruiting class. Gates and Farmer were 4 star recruits. That was a good recruiting class for us for offensive lineman.
  16. To a point you are right. Many potential walk ons are now taking scholarships at FBS schools. Nebraska also recruited different body types for their linemen. When you are primarily a run blocking team you put a premium on athletic bodies that can pull and trap. Those attributes are important still today, but they also add in height, arm length, and hand size to the equation. A guy like Aaron Taylor who was about 6' tall wouldn't even get a look at Nebraska. Will Shields most likely would not get a scholarship to NU now. He is about 6'2" and doesn't fit the mold. I think one of the linemen they took last year in recruiting was 6'3 all the others were taller. It wasn't uncommon for NU to start a 6'3 at tackle in the 80's That's right.
  17. I think the plan is... IF TA's passing-decision making starts leading to turnovers... and that's IF... Then the coaches can tweak the offence to more run plays and designed quarterback run plays... hoping that leads to fewer turnovers. I think the coaching staff will attempt that first... and they will give that a really hard and sustained attempt... before sending in any backups. We could even end up being a run first team again ? In fact I just don't see any backups getting any playing time this year unless we are way ahead in games or unless injuries force the issue. Just stop....that isn't happening with this coaching staff. And weren't you the one that kept talking about reality in another thread? I think you were...this is another reality for you, this coaching staff is never going to have a run first mentality. Langsdorf was quoted yesterday saying one major goal of the offence this year was... fewer turnovers. That's what my comment was about. I don't think we're going to see TA throwing the ball as much this year... IF his throwing-decision making is leading to turnovers. Kind of he exact opposite of last year. Last year we would go away from the running plays if they thought they weren't working... this year we may go away from the passing plays if they're not working...leading to turnovers. The turnover thing is bigger in their minds this year. And I don't think we will see backups in the game any more than last year. I just put that other comment in to see if I could get anyone riled up. LOL

  19. Riley will play the best guy, every game, as his neck is on the line. LOL his neck is on the line. Maybe your line. Even if this year flubs again, he's got another 2 before his neck is on the line. Whether Riley is going to be fired or not, the AD should tell him to play the young guys. Period. end of discussion. Seniors can and should play if the team is competing for championships / upper half of the bowls, etc. but once the losing season becomes apparent, then you double down on the 'backups to the future' program. Who plays and who doesn't isn't a decision the AD should be making. Agreed. He should not be making it because he doesn't have to. The HC and assistants should make the RIGHT decisions for the future of the program, not just the future interests of the coach. This is, in my view, at the very root of many of the issues of the program today. Frank wasn't recruiting sufficiently well and then as the cupboard got empty, he found himself going from the three deep to the two deep charts. He quit publishing the accurate heights, weights, speeds, etc. We started hearing the BS about players and their 'injuries' etc. The excuses were aplenty, some more legit than others, etc. Then long time devoted assistants were fired. We all know the story. But the problem develops to a point where desperation to win now and to hell with the future mentality takes control. Like a business, you have to plan and invest and sacrifice in the near term to build for the long term. Far too many are looking at the what have you done for me lately and yet ultimately the great coaches build a program and then maintain it. You do that by making sure the present is brighter than the past and the future is brighter than the present. Great comment.
  20. That's one of the best comments I've ever read concerning that era. ***** The only thing I might add... concerning revisionist history... is that Osborne's National championships obviously came AFTER the pressure was put on him to perform at a higher level (ultimatum) and the criticism. No one ever talks about that... all we ever hear is how he threatened to leave for Colorado as if he was some sort of aggrieved soul. The ultimatum was probably the best thing that ever happened to Osborne. Football and sports in general is something where the participants respond in a positive way to pressure and criticism-critique. You have to expect and in fact demand performance at all levels. Thanks again for your honest recount of that era of Nebraska football. And it's not a recount. I was born in 1983. My hardcore attention to Nebraska football didnt begin until the Washington game in 1991. I dont even remember the big turning point. The Kenny Walker bear hug at the 1990 (91) Citrus Bowl. But I study stuff. I study history. Why? Cuz I like to know what I'm talking about when I'm arguing. I watched videos. Read books. Memorized the play by play of the game of the century by the time I was ten. Now I'm fortunate as hell. Why? My 8 year old son, when he goes to the library every week, is bringing home DVD's of past Husker games and seasons from the 90's. So just like me lookin into the 70's, maybe we're on the brink of another special time in Husker football. I only hope. it's all I got. I lived through those times... and I can tell you that your telling of the events, and interpretation of the events, is the most accurate thing I've ever read on a Nebraska football chat board. Sometimes being removed from the actual events allows a person the have a more realistic assessment.
  21. Mavric... I'm asking this as an honest question. What exactly is "this" ? I see people speaking honestly. Is that it ? Or is it rehashing the Bo thing ?
